SESSION 9: ICE AGE (AUGUST 13-17)Camp has frozen over. What will we find as the ice melts? Become a historian as we discover life below zero degrees.

LEADER IN TRAINING (LIT) PROGRAM Entering 7th, 8th, or 9th gradeThe Leader-In-Training (LIT) program enables older campers to build leadership skills while assuming some counselor responsibilities and participating in LIT-only activities. Participants are expected to be positive, helpful role models for younger campers and help them develop the YMCA character values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility. The LIT program is for teens entering seventh, eighth or ninth grade and is offered sessions two, four, six and eight this summer. Applications are required for participation in this program. LIT applicants must submit answers to the following questions:

• What does leadership mean to you?• Who do you look up to as a leader? What makes them a leader?• Why do you want to be a LIT in YMCA Day Camps?

MCKINLEY PARTNERSHIPMcKinley Properties want to make sure their camp-age residents have an opportunity to go to camp, regardless of transportation and ability to pay. They are providing bussing and financial subsidy so their camp-age residents who live in the following apartment complexes will have the opportunity to attend the YCS Ypsilanti Day Camp and LIT program at Estabrook for $20 per session with transportation to/from their apartment welcome center: Aspen Chase (residents from Golfside and The Villas can meet at this location as well), Evergreen, Glencoe Hills, Roundtree and Schooner Cove. If your camper is a resident of one of these apartment complexes, be sure to register for the McKinley option. The camper must be a resident of one of the McKinley Properties listed to receive subsidy and bus transportation.

DROP OFF AND PICK UP LOCATIONSYCS Ypsilanti Day Camp will take place at Estabrook Elementary School (1555 West Cross Street, Ypsilanti, MI 48197). Drop-off and pick-up will take place at the main entrance off the east parking lot (near the cafeteria). A YMCA flag and sign will indicate where the check-in table will be. Camper drop-off is from 8:30-9:00 AM and camper pick-up is from 4:00-4:30 PM. Every camper MUST be signed into and out of Camp.

FIELD TRIPSEach week we will offer a field trip related to the theme of the week. Past trips have included trips to the Pinckney State Recreation Area, ice skating at the Ann Arbor Ice Cube, The Ann Arbor Art Fair and more. Field trip destinations will be posted in our weekly newsletter. On field trip days, buses will leave Camp after morning check-in and will return by 4:00PM. To ensure your child’s safety, please make sure that all sections of the Health Form, including the field trip permission section, are signed before Camp begins.

Would you like to join us? We encourage parent chaperones to accompany their child/ren on the field trips. If you are interested in being a parent chaperone, please contact the YCS Ypsilanti Day Camp Site Director, Alisa Littlejohn Leach at [email protected].

SAFETY AROUND WATER SWIM LESSONSThe Safety Around Water (SAW) Program has helped thousands of kids learn personal safety in and around the water as well as increase their comfort level in the water through basic swimming skills, water games and activities. Campers will have an opportunity to participate in swimming and personal water safety lessons during each week of Camp. Additionally, campers will have opportunity for free swim at Rutherford Pool (975 Congress Street) each week. For more information about SAW and for additional swimming opportunities, contact our Aquatics Director, Becky Epstein, at 734-661-8020 or [email protected].

YMCA CAMP READERS AND THE BOOKMOBILEReading is a great way for children to foster imagination, creativity, and critical thinking skills. We also recognize that literacy and reading levels can drop off when kids are out of school. Because of this, silent and group reading is scheduled daily. The Ypsilanti District Library (YDL) Bookmobile will come to Camp weekly and campers who are Ypsilanti residents will have the opportunity to get a library card and check out books to take home with them. All campers will be enrolled in the YDL Summer Challenge reading program and have an opportunity to earn a book to keep. Contact the YCS Ypsilanti Day Camp Site Director, Alisa Littlejohn Leach at [email protected] if you would like to volunteer to read to campers.

There are peanut-free and some vegetarian choices, but you may send your child with his/her own packed breakfast and lunch if you prefer. The Y will provide an afternoon snack.

HEALTHY EATING & PHYSICAL ACTIVITY (HEPA)With the YMCA’s commitment to healthy living, we have adopted the Healthy Eating and Physical Activity (HEPA) standards to live by at Camp and in all our programs. There are five components to HEPA:

Beverages: Water is accessible and available at all times. Only low-fat or non-fat milk is served with meals.

Food: Provide fruits and vegetables at every meal and snack. Do not provide fried foods, food that contain trans-fat, or foods that have sugar listed in the first three ingredients or that contain more than eight grams of added sugar per serving.

Physical Activity: Children will receive moderate to vigorous physical activity for at least 60 minutes per day and will get outside as often as possible.

Family Engagement: It is important to let families know what we are doing at Camp. We are providing weekly newsletters, both paper and electronic, and two Healthy Family Nights.

Screen Time: There will be no screen time (TV, movies, cell phones, video games, computer or any other digital devices) at YMCA programs.

If you have questions or want to learn more about HEPA standards, please talk to the Youth Community Program Director, Colette Hemker.
