Day 1 History

Focus: Finding out about important people from the past.

Mary Seacole lived more than 150 years ago and had an adventurous life travelling across many lands to run businesses and help people in need.

During the Crimean War, Mary travelled to care for wounded and sick soldiers.

Watch the video below to find out more about Mary and her achievements.

Mary was born in Kingston, Jamaica.

Her dad was a Scottish soldier, and her mum was Jamaican, so Mary was mixed race. Mary's mum ran a hotel where wounded soldiers sometimes stayed. She taught Mary how to use plants to help care for them. At that time, a disease called cholera spread across Kingston. Mary helped those who were sick. Cholera was a terrible disease.

When Britain sent soldiers to war in Crimea, the disease was more dangerous than the enemy. Thousands of soldiers died from it. Because Mary knew how to treat cholera, she wanted to go to Crimea as a nurse, but she wasn't chosen to help. Mary went anyway, using her own money to pay for her journey.

Watch the clip below to tell you more about Mary's early life and her journey to Crimea.

When Mary reached Crimea, she set up a hotel right on the battlefront. The soldiers liked Mary so much that they called her ‘Mother Seacole’.

Watch the clip below to learn more about Mary's role in the Crimean War.

During the war, Mary sold hot meals and looked after wounded and sick soldiers. But helping the soldiers cost so much money that by the time the war ended, Mary was very poor.

To pay her debts, she wrote a book called ‘The Wonderful Adventures of Mrs Seacole in Many Lands’. After she died, people forgot Mary Seacole, but we remember her today as a woman of mixed race who lived an exciting and unusual life.

She owned a business, travelled to many places, and went to a war zone, bravely helping others.

Watch the clip below to learn more about Mary Seacole after she returned from the war.

Focus: Capital Cities around the world

The countries in the table are some of the world’s top tourist destinations. Write down the name of the capital city

of each country in the table. The first one is done for you. If you don’t know, look it up in an atlas or encyclopaedia,

or on the internet. From what you know about these countries, think of one reason why millions of people want to

travel to each one. Jot your ideas in the spaces in the box. One is done for you

Day 3 Maths

Adding and Subtracting Money: Coins and Notes

Now we are able to add and subtract money with both notes and coins we are going to spend the rest of the week

looking at real life problems that involve money. Look at this problem. It is asking us to find the least value. This means

the money that is the smallest. First we need to add up each one:

£2+£2+£2=£6 £10+£10+£10=£30

£20

So the smallest is the first picture of £6

Now you have a go! Use everything you know about adding and subtracting money to work out these money problems.
