Year 6 Remote Learning Pack

Welcome from Mrs Kenny and Miss Davies!

Hi year six! Well here we are with the final week’s remote learning pack! I have tried to

get a little creative for this one and keep it purposeful but fun! So, your maths and English

this week will be in the form of a daily challenge rather than a set area. Look out for your

zoom music session with Mr Bromfield on Wednesday 15th July for a final singalong

and the Year 6 prize celebrations will also take part on zoom this year, On Thursday

16th July at 1.45pm (link will be sent by text on class dojo class story for both of

these!).

It is hard to believe we are finally here! The last week of primary school! It doesn’t seem

like five minutes since we were both greeting you for your first day of year two! It has

been an absolute privilege to not only teach you, but have the enjoyment of your company

for three years! You are all fantastic and unique individuals; you will go on to do amazing

things! We leave you with our warmest wishes and this one final message of

encouragement:

You will also find this information on our website where you will then be able to download it

if you wish to alongside a list of useful links. Please also don’t forget to use

[email protected] if you need support in any way and keep sending us work on

dojo!

Whole School Weekly Challenge

Set yourself 6 targets that you would like to get better at and improve in your class next year e.g.

neater handwriting, know my 8 times tables, be able to throw a ball further

Wellbeing Idea for the Week

Operation: Class of 2020!!!! Part two!

There’s still time to record your memories – A couple of weeks ago I asked you to start

writing down memories about Glebe Academy. We have had some wonderful ones in, things

that took Miss Davies and I down memory lane! I would like you to look back at those and do a

short video talking about one or two of them. Again please send these to

[email protected] so I can put them together and share them all with you!

Virtual prom! Whilst it won’t take the place of your real prom (which we will be holding

sometime in the new academic year so look out for an invite!) we thought it would be fun to

have a zoom virtual prom! So, get your party clothes on and let’s have fun! We will be having a

little quiz, some music and maybe one final dance off (or a dance around the living room at the

very least!) This will be on Thursday 16th July from 6.30pm – 7.30pm. Keep an eye out for the

link to the zoom meeting!

Joke of the Week

The final joke of the week is brought to you by Caleb! It’s a cheeky one to

end the year!

Hunter 1 : “Do you hunt bear?”

Hunter 2: “No, I go fully clothed!”

Day 1 Maths - Combination locks!

I’ve got some delicious cakes and donuts but I’m being terribly mean and not sharing! To

keep them safe I’ve locked them away in a safe, which has three combination locks. To give

you a chance at getting in, I’ve given you three mathematical clues to help you crack the

code! There are three levels for you to try with three locks in each. Challenge yourself

appropriately! I have also given you a recording sheet to record your thinking and your

answers! Can you get to the donuts?

Day 1 English – Free writing!

Let’s get creative and delve into another reality. Look at the image carefully and write a short story

on it. Be creative! Use what we have taught you about stories, about tension and atmosphere, about

language and hooking your reader in! I have given you the first sentence in the story, you just have

to finish it off!

Slowly, a foot moved, then the trunk, then a loud growl shook the cavern...

A nice practical experiment for your last week of science; this will help us to understand

light and how shadows are formed.

Instructions:

Activity: Making Shadows

This activity works best in a dark room. You will need an adults help for a few minutes

for this to help put the markers in the correct place.

1. Place the figure in the centre of the paper and use bluetack/tape to keep it upright.

2. Mark 4 line markers on the paper that are a distance from the figure equal to the

height of the figure (see diagram below).

3. Mark 4 markers that are a distance half of the height of the figure (under the

original markers).

4. Mark 4 markers that are a distance double the height of the figure.

5. Draw little boxes next to these markers to tick.

6. Move the torch around the figure so that you produce shadows that touch the

markers one at a time. Once you've produce the correct shadow they can tick the box.

7. Draw the outline (not shaded in) of your shadows at each marker

Extension:

Now, point the torch at the figure so that a shadow is cast on the wall. Move the torch towards and away from the figure without changing direction.

Now answer the questions on the next page:

What happens to the shadow when you tilt the torch up and down?

What happens to the shadow when you move the torch closer to the figure and further away? Why do you think this happens?

On a sunny day you see your shadow on the ground. Why?

Do you think your shadow changes during the day? How and why?

Let’s play countdown! If you watch the show you’ll know how it works; choose six numbers and use the

four operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication and division) to make the number that is

generated! The trick to this is don’t give up when your first attempt doesn’t give you the result.

This game will certainly build up your mathematical resilience! Have fun! Send some of your successes

and working out to dojo for extra working hard dojos!

Link to the game is here: http://happysoft.org.uk/countdown/numgame.php

Day 2 English

A pathway to where?? There are pathways everywhere, like the ones

below:

You are all coming to the end of one path and starting a new and exciting one. Close your eyes and

imagine it now, stretching out in front of you. What shape is it? Straight? Curvy? What is it made

of? What can you see in the distance?

Thinking of your path Where is this? Where does it go to? How would you feel travelling along here

alone? What would you be travelling in? How will your journey end?

Use similes and metaphors along with personification to describe your path (you can use the ones

above for inspiration if you need it) and how it 'moves' across the landscape. Using your feelings and

emotions about the future and your personal path, add detail to answer the questions I asked above.

To enrich your English lesson, I would like you to re-read your description of your path and then

create a picture of it based on that description (this may help you to edit your writing and add more

detail as you draw!).

This about:

Perspective: Is your path moving away from you? Think about how to draw a path getting gradually

smaller. How are you drawing objects at different distances, such as trees?

Mood: Can you use shade or colour to put across the emotions you are feeling? This may change as

you move along your path!

Meaning: How can people looking at your picture pick up on what it means? Are you using symbols?

Images?

Here is a model for you to look at perspective when drawing:

Day 3 English

Little bit of poetry for day three! Dig deep and look into your soul; this one is going to be about you!

I would like you to write a kennings poem about yourself. Look at the structure of the kennings poem

again below; then mind map facts about yourself (food you like, things you’re good at, your personality

and qualities etc.), then create your kennings using the ‘noun/verb’ structure. You can then decorate

the space around it with all of things you’ve included in it.

Model kennings (use a noun then a verb on each line)

Burger devourer

Dog fusser

Joke teller

Dance master

Art lover

Heights dodger

Hug provider

Now complete yours below, don’t forget to decorate the outside!

Find your name in Stoke on Trent!

Using google maps (with the map setting on satellite) look at the features of Stoke on Trent. From a

bird’s eye view they can look like letters of the alphabet (look at the model).

Either, using the screen shot feature on a phone or snipping tool/screen shot feature of a computer,

try to find each letter of your name. The you can arrange them onto a word/PowerPoint/publisher

document and send them to your portfolio!

Extend – Try more than one location? You could choose a different country or city to create your

name!

Day 3 IT

Tip – to switch the place names

off, click on the three bars next

to the ‘Search Google Maps’ bar,

the click on ‘map labels on’ button.

Day 4 Maths –

During an Olympic Games many national flags are on display.

Here's a chance to investigate some of them.

Pick a flag and investigate some of the following:-

What shapes can you see in it? Can you describe

them and their angles?

Does the flag have any lines of reflective

symmetry, if so how many lines?

Can you find any pairs of parallel lines? If so mark

them on your flag.

Are there any lines perpendicular to one another?

Can you find a way to classify the shapes in your

flag?

Now try with another flag.

Day 4 English

Tomorrow is your online leavers assembly (sniff, I’m not crying, you’re crying!). You have been

working hard thinking of some memories (some of you have done recordings of some of them). I

would like you all to write some down that you can share during the zoom assembly. So here’s a blank

page to fill with everything you remember. Dig deep into your memories, I’ve popped some of the

things I remember down to jog your memory!
