Welcome to our Spring Farm Focus!Whether your lambing season is well underway or not yet started this edition features a wide range of lambing essentials from milk feeders and colostrum’s to feeds and supplements, plus you can find our 2015 Lambing Checklist in the middle of this newsletter with an opportunity to win one of four Lambing Essentials Kits worth over £240.

We were very pleased to be involved with a trial with Harper Adams University on calf coats which found that their use added more than 5kg to calves’ overall weight gain up to 12 weeks (December- February). More information can be found about the trial on page 15, or visit our website www.wynnstay.co.uk for full details.

If you are looking for a consistent performing maize variety for this year take a look at page 18 for information on Acumen, along with details of our special offers of a free soil analysis on orders of 15 packs or more plus grass seed vouchers if ordered before 25th February 2015.

We were pleased to announce in November 2014 our new nominated charity would be The Royal Agricultural Benevolent Institution (R.A.B.I), a fantastic charity which supports farming families. If you are interested in supporting R.A.B.I why not join in with their Great British Beef Week starting on 23rd April 2013, more information can be found at www.rabi.org.uk.

Automatic feeders have proven themselves world-wide in the raising of lambs. They provide low-labour feeding and ensure the healthy growth of the animals.

Features

• The lambs ingest their feed via a sucking teat as desired. The feed consisting of water and milk is prepared hot and fresh in small portions in feeding boxes then quickly and intensively mixed.

• Semi-automatic cleaning process with increased cleaning temperature.

• Hose cleaning pistol and height-adjustable front plate with teat bracket and variable teat position.

• You can feed 240 lambs reliably and safely.

• Approximately 20 – 30 lambs can be fed per station (up to 8 stations).

• Easy to transport with the lifting handles.

• Extremely cost efficient. £2.50 per lamb over 5 years.

Each feeder can automatically feed up to 70 lambs at one time, dramatically reducing the man hours required for mixing milk and feeding lambs, although a high degree of management skill is still required. The machine should be cleaned daily and calibrated regularly.

ANIMAL HEALTHFocus on

Looking ahead at sheep worming options for 2015, an overriding priority is to use a minimal number of treatments with maximum efficacy when they are given, according to Zoetis vet Andrew Montgomery.

He points out that the number roundworm eggs passed by ewes in faeces rises significantly at lambing. To counteract this, research has found that treating ewes at lambing with long acting injectable 2% moxidectin - trade name, CYDECTIN 2% LA for Sheep - significantly reduced faecal egg outputs over more than 60-days post-treatment, compared with a 0.1% oral drench of the same active ingredient." [Ref 1]

In lambs from treated ewes, the study found those grazing with injection-treated mothers had significantly lower faecal egg counts (FECs) than lambs grazing with drenched ones. "This regime appears to lessen the worm challenge to lambs and may offer potential for higher growth rates and reduced anthelmintic use," says

Mr Montgomery. "In turn, fewer lamb treatments would thereby also reduce costs and selection pressure for anthelmintic resistance."All CYDECTIN brands contain moxidectin, POM-VPS. CYDECTIN TriclaMox Pour-On for Cattle and Oral Solution for Sheep contain moxidectin & triclabendazole, POM-VPS.

For further information, farmers should contact their animal medicines supplier SQP, veterinary surgeon or Zoetis UK Ltd , Walton Oaks, Dorking Road, Tadworth, Surrey, KT20 7NS. Use medicines responsibly: www.noah.co.uk/responsible.

Ideal for calf barns or low ceiling buildings. The Blast Fan can be positioned in the sidewall or inside the building. It creates a quiet, efficient air stream that introduces fresh air and blasts the stale, stagnant air away. This strong air blast given off by the fan cools the animals to reduce heat stress, dry bedding and helps insect control. The fan uses a high heat, energy efficient motor that carries a full three year warranty.

ACUMEN MAIZE SEEDFocus on

ACUMEN – THE PROVEN MAIZE CHOICE

Maize variety choice can have a big impact on the production of home grown forage. Farmers looking for a consistent performing maize variety need look no further than the Limagrain variety Acumen.

With dairy margins being squeezed, ensuring consistent quality forage is crucial. Year in year out maize can produce a consistent palatable, high energy, rumen-friendly forage with less variability than is seen with grass silage.

But farmers also need consistent yields and this is where variety choice plays a huge role. For many farmers Acumen has become the variety of choice based on its suitability and proven reliability.

Acumen has been on the NIAB list since 2012 and in that time has developed a first class reputation among farmers looking for a proven variety that delivers wherever it is grown. On good sites it holds its own against all comers while on more marginal sites it still out performs most other varieties. It did fantastically well this year in both trial plots and customers’ fields.

WHAT MAKES ACUMEN SO POPULAR?

• It is a very early variety helping ensure the crop is harvested in better conditions and is available to feed sooner

• It has extremely good early vigour which means it gets away to a good start, even in challenging growing conditions

• It has good early cob fill and development

• It is a very reliable variety in terms of both yield and quality across a wide range of sites and growing conditions.

Acumen’s adaptability and reliability make it a popular choice every year and this is set to continue as farmers look for consistent quality feeds to form the basis for their rations.

To produce high yields it is vital to ensure maize receives the optimum supply of nutrients. To help you ensure accurate crop nutrition we are offering a free soil analysis with every 15 packs of Acumen seed ordered.

Please contact your Wynnstay Representative for more information or call Dr Simon Pope, Maize Seed Product Manager on 01939 210555.

FERTILISERFocus on

Advances in grass breeding over the last few decades have been impressive. We now have varieties that are much higher yielding, have greater digestibility and palatability and, if we choose, can have higher levels of sugars. Reseeding to gain these advantages costs money and time, but the return on investment is substantial for a well-managed reseed that is efficiently utilised in the years after being sown.

A major part of getting the reseed right and setting it up for success is nutrients. Make sure you have an up to date soil analysis that includes pH, phosphorus (P), Potassium

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR RESEEDING GRASSLAND

(Potash – K) and Magnesium (Mg). Getting pH, P and K levels right is all part of giving your reseed the best chance of getting the start it needs.

An ideal product to use is GrowHow No. Seven® (17-17-17) at a rate of 300 kg/ha, which will provide 50 Kg of N, P2O5, and K2O /ha. The added benefit of the high water soluble phosphate content of this product means that it will help the grass seedlings to establish quickly by promoting root development. Autumn sown or grass/clover swards do not need Nitrogen, so autumn grade products like 0-24-24, or even straights such as TSP and MOP can be used.

THOUGHT ABOUT BIOMASS?

Andrew Evans (Wynnstay Director) - Maesmawr, Welshpool

As a dairy farmer with a herd of over 160 cattle, Andrew wanted to save on the high cost of heating fuel and earn an extra income through his business. He invested in a 120kW CN Stoker biomass system supplied & installed by Geogen Technologies Ltd. Using woodchip, wood pellets or logs the system will provide the full heating and hot water needs of his 4 bedroom dwelling and dairy.

Through the Government Renewable Heat Incentive Scheme the installation is expected to generate 157,680KWh of heat per year bringing in an annual income of £12,000.00 for a period of 20 years.

The system is expected to pay for itself within 4.8 years.
