SHEEP FEEDS

4 million lambs are lost in the period just pre-lambing to a few days of age, costing the industry an estimated £120 million per annum, 55% of which are due to poor ewe feeding. The message is very clear - sheep farmers should feed the best possible ewe concentrate pre- and post - lambing to maximise profitability. The lowest cost product will simply not do.

EweMaster™The EweMaster™ range of concentrate feeds, pre- and post lambing, is available exclusively from Wynnstay, ensure your ewes get the best possible concentrate to maximize profitability.

• Quality, high energy concentrates with a spread of raw materials including a balance of starch sugars, digestible fibre and fat, enabling healthy rumen function.

• Contain high levels of protein and use high quality protein sources thus encouraging the ewe to milk off her back to maximise milk production, improving lamb growth.

• Contain optimum levels of Magnesium, Phosphorus and Calcium to avoid hypocalcaemia

• Contain a unique Vitamin and Trace element supplement including generous levels of:-

Cobalt - associated with lambs standing and suckling earlier

Iodine - required for the production of active brown adipose tissue which provides energy for shivering (in newborn lambs, 30% of heat generation comes from brown fat)

Zinc - active in immunity against disease and essential in the production of Keratin, affecting both udder and foot health

Availa Zinc - well proven to be more effective than all other sources of Zinc

Vitamin E & Sel-Plex® Selenium - essential for lamb vigour, survivability and immunity to disease.

RIGHT STUFF FOR THE WHITE STUFF - HOW MUCH IS YOUR LIQUID FEED REALLY COSTING YOU?

We all care about price, its human nature to do so but sometimes we need to look a little closer to see the true value for money.

It is no secret that the more protein contained within your molasses the less per unit the protein costs, however many simply overlook this in favour of overall price per tonne. Let us show you how to farm smarter this winter.

Lowest cost per unit of protein

Whilst you’re feeding a sugar source, why not raise the protein level by using QLF’s ‘Timed Release’ products – for as little as £1.30 per unit of extra protein – that’s the equivalent of buying Soya at less than £200 per tonne!

Don’t forget the power of sugar

Many silage analysis’ this winter are showing low in sugar and a lot with high fibre levels; feeding a source of sugar provides energy at the right time in relation to starch and fibre to increase ration nutritive value.

To find out how much we can save you this winter please call us on 01691 828512 or visit www.wynnstay.co.uk

● Beneficial bacteria like acidic conditions and proliferate .

● Acidity encourages faster clotting in the stomach

● Milk is better digested ,so less undigested food for pathogens to thrive on.

● Protimax egg protein (rich in specific antibodies) helps the calf meet early life challenges

● Whole milk is deficient in some amino acids - MilkMate contains extra amino acids

● Whole milk can be deficient in certain minerals - MilkMate contains added minerals

An effective long day lighting system must meet the following criteria

1. Provide even light distribution at no less than 168lux at a height of 3 feet above ground level over the entire area of the building.

2. Consistency and evenness of light distribution is important average lux levels are not important.

3. For maximum benefit the day period must be at least 16 hours long and the dark period no shorter than 6 hours.

4. If cows need to be moved or handled during the dark period use low intensity red lights. Other night lighting must be below 10 lux.

Installing a correctly designed system may be more expensive in the short term but long term it will ensure many years of effective operation. Enviralights marketed by Wynnstay excel in terms of effective lifespan.

Nutritional Strategy for MaizeAs a large, rapidly growing plant, maize has substantial nutrient requirements. It’s worth spending a little time planning fertiliser requirements, as getting it right can provide a big crop of conserved forage with a high energy content.

Assessing nitrogen (N) need can be tricky, particularly where organic manures are regularly applied. Whilst the Fertiliser Manual has tables to estimate Soil Nitrogen Supply (SNS), it’s impossible for such general guidance to give values for where muck is used. This, however, isn’t of great practical use for farmers or advisers planning their fertiliser needs! Also, the Fertiliser Manual recommendations are based on a fresh weight yield of 40t/ha and many modern varieties will yield more than this. GrowHow’s N-Min service now includes maize cropping, after 5 years of field trials to establish both its effectiveness and recommendations to achieve a worthwhile crop. This soil test measures the amount of N that will come from the soil to supply the crop and can be used with the GrowHow N-Calc program to assess what additional N is required. It is particularly useful where organic manures are applied, helping to ensure that the crop is neither over- nor under-supplied. Under-supply clearly may prevent the crop from reaching its potential, whilst over-supply can mean an excessively leafy plant that is slow to ripen, as well as possibly resulting in losses to the environment. Neither is cost-effective!

Whilst phosphorus (P) requirements are smaller than those for both N and potash (K), it’s still important, particularly for germination and establishment. At index 2, 55 kg P2O5/ha is required; this could be supplied by “average” cattle slurry (6% dry matter) spread at 50m3/ha (4500 gall/ac). Recent Maize Growers Association advice suggests that ploughing, then applying slurry and using a cultivator to work it in helps to avoid putting the available nutrients too deep. At below P index 2, slurry nutrients will not be sufficient, so seedbed P is needed. GrowHow’s EarlyBite 25-10-0 is great in these situations, providing N as well as P – 200 kg/ha supplies 50 kg

N/ha and 20 kg P2O5/ha – ideal for germination.

Maize has a large potash requirement: at index 2-, 175 kg/ha potash is needed. Slurry applied at 50m3/ha doesn’t quite fulfil this, so a small dressing of K may be needed. In practice, many soils that regularly

receive muck will be above this index, so slurry will supply enough. The importance of both P and K emphasises the need for a recent soil test – know what you have, know what you need!

Sulphur’s (S) importance has recently come to the fore. Whilst the plant’s requirement is modest, so little is deposited from the atmosphere now, applying S is beneficial. Recent GrowHow trials suggest that 20-25 kg SO3/ha improves both yield and N uptake; this corroborates work by the MGA showing benefits on mucked or un-mucked sites. Using a product such as SingleTop 27-0-0 (12 SO3) at a rate of 200 kg/ha is ideal, supplying 54 kg N/ha and 24 kg SO3/ha.
