LIQUID MOLASSES WITH QLF

QLF - A key ingredient for this winter’s diets...

Balancing forages could be a challenge this winter; grass silage quality is generally better than last, though quantities are variable. Maize crops are or already have been harvested and good yields will allow higher proportions of maize silage to be used in diets, along with whole crop cereals. The resulting diets will have a high ratio of starch to sugar that may impede milk yield if not addressed and there will be an increased requirement for supplementary protein. Incorporating chopped straw into diets will also be an option and to ensure optimum digestive efficiency a source of sugar will be required along with rumen degradable protein.

QLF TMR Products - The ideal ‘Timed Release’ protein and sugar supplement

QLF TMR products offer a very cost effective source of protein, whilst providing valuable sucrose to help maximise digestive efficiency. The graph below shows the cost of feeding a 41% protein, 34% sugar mix by 2 methods. The first uses cane molasses and soya : rapemeal (50:50), the second uses QLF TMR 60

Feeding QLF TMR 60 is over 40% cheaper than an equivalent cane : soya: rape mix!

Turning a fragile milk drinking

calf into a sturdy ruminant

It is also important to keep air flowing over head, while keeping the calf out of the draught. The unique design of the Holm & Laue Calf Igloo allows up to 15 calves to lie together, out of the draught while the stale air is drawn out of the chimney.

Keep Calves Warm for increased Growth Rates

As temperatures drop below 10ºC, its time to keep baby calves warm. Calves from 0-3 weeks are particularly vulnerable in cold weather. The simple solution is to slip on a calf jacket.

This simple management tool will save money on expensive milk powder, but also reduces stress and helps calf health.

Trials show increased growth rates of 6kg over a 65 day trial.

CuT FLoCK LAMENESS iNCiDENCE To 2% WiTHiN THREE yEARUK sheep farmers continue to struggle with flock lameness problems. One of the main reasons has been the lack of an industry-wide practical lameness reduction protocol, but thanks to the proven five-point plan flockmasters now have an effective disease control strategy available to them. The aim is to build flock disease resilience and immunity over time, whilst also reducing the disease challenge. Stick with it and flock lameness incidence can be cut to 2% and below within three years.

Liver Fluke Treatment - NoW AVAiLABLE!

The flukicide drench ZANIL® has been re-introduced into Great Britain by MSD Animal Health as a treatment against chronic liver fluke in cattle and sheep.

Based on the active ingredient oxyclozanide, Zanil is highly effective against the adult fluke responsible for chronic disease and – significantly for dairy farmers – is licensed for use in young, pregnant and lactating animals, with a 72-hour milk withhold period.

Liver fluke problems are very much on the increase in UK cattle and sheep exacerbated by recent wet summer and autumn periods that have created ideal conditions for this parasite to proliferate and infect grazing livestock.

Chronic liver fluke causes serious economic losses for livestock farmers. In dairy herds, for example, there will be a negative impact on fertility and milk production where cows are affected.

Zanil is used widely and effectively in Ireland in the control of fluke problems, and there is no known resistance to the active ingredient oxyclozanide. With its re-introduction into the country, Zanil offers unique benefits as a flukicide-only treatment that is licensed for use in lactation and in the dry period for the treatment of adult fluke in dairy cows.

Zanil is an oral drench and dosage rate is 3ml per 10kg bodyweight in cattle, up to a maximum of 105ml, and 4.5ml per 10kg bodyweight in sheep, up to a maximum of 20ml.

For more information on liver fluke please contact your local Wynnstay Animal Health representative or ask in your nearest Wynnstay Store.

The Five Point Plan:1. Treat clinical cases early. Treating lame sheep early brings strong financial and performance benefits, with a greater proportion of lambs from early treated ewes staying alive and growing faster.

2. Vaccinate animals to stimulate immunity. Vaccination against footrot should be part of a whole flock approach to disease control. The aim is to raise immunity within the flock to help improve the success of the other disease steps.

3. Avoid spreading infection at gathering and handling. Footrot and scald are infectious bacterial diseases, which can easily spread from animal to animal. Ensure sheep handling areas are clean and well drained; dirty concrete is just as bad as soil.

4. Quarantine incoming animals. Make sure a good procedure is in place to separate bought-in stock for four weeks after purchase.

5. Cull badly or repeatedly affected animals. When a ewe has had more than one bout of footrot in a season she should be given a cull tag. This will help prevent the cycle of infection. Culling may be high in the first year, but will reduce dramatically

thereafter.

Footvax vaccination programmes should be tailored to meet individual flock disease control requirements and used in conjunction with the other four plan points. Wherever possible, whole flock vaccination should be adopted.

Polytunnels manufactured in Britain. The manufacturer of these Polytunnels have more than 8 years experience of building and supplying Polytunnels throughout the uK and Europe for a variety of different uses.

Calf Housing

• Excellent housing option for rearing calves in & relatively inexpensive alternative to the traditional farm shed and buildings.

• They help create a stable protective environment which can reduce stress and increase comfort.

• The calf polytunnel is supplied with a 1.5m (5ft) straight side, which provides additional ventilation but also helps to prevent calves from damaging the polythene sheet.

• The straight sides have several options to be covered, they can either be covered with 1m high corrugated sheets plus 0.5m high netting above or they can be covered the full 1.5m height with high strength netting that keeps the calves in palace while allowing air to flow through.

• Ventilation is extremely important. Calf Polytunnels can now be fitted with roof vents. The vents are covered which prevents the bedding getting soaked every time it rains.

A range of sizes are available to suit individual specifications.

Polytunnels can also be used for a variety of different uses such as: storing machinery, fodder, during shearing time, gardening etc.

Poultry and Horticultural/Gardening Polytunnels are also available.

Sheep Housing

Polytunnels have been used extensively as a sheep housing solution for many years. Many customers say that they prefer to lamb sheep in a polytunnel than a shed as the increased ventilation and additional light (especially during the dark winter months) creates a much happier environment for both the animals and the farmer.

Polytunnels are strong and durable and can withstand the wind and snow

• Labour saving, sheep easier to manage when inside, and lamb survival rates can be increased when compared to an outdoor lambing flock

• Improved ventilation can help to reduce cases of respiratory problems such as pneumonia and bronchitis

• Improved light conditions can increase animal welfare and create an improved working environment.

There are many different ways of setting up a polytunnel for sheep depending on individual requirements. It is worth remembering the space required when housing sheep; depending on the size of ewe they will need approximately 1.5sqm each.

Prices include delivery to site, *installation available at additional cost.

RENEWABLE ENERgY

GeoGen Technologies Limited GeoGen Technologies Ltd has been formed as a joint venture between Wynnstay Group Plc and D Jones Electrical Contractors Ltd which builds on a long standing partnership between the two businesses.

There may have been reductions in FIT rates on solar PV systems over the last 18 months, but with this came the drop in the price of panels ensuring the installation of solar PV systems is still a viable investment for many. This is certainly the case for dairy farmer James Weaver from Rooms Farm, Adderly, Market Drayton.

James, along with his parents Brian and Carol, milk 200 Holstein cattle and rear 200 youngstock at their farm in Shropshire. They recently made the decision to invest in a 50kWh ground-mount-ed solar PV system, and during this period Brian has generated a yield of over 16,000 units.

The family made the decision to invest in a solar PV as a result of the savings that could be made on energy bills along with the attractive payback period on the investment. They have access to the a live monitoring system which allows them to see the yield of the system at any time and by adjusting their habits they have been able to make full use of the electricity produced.

We are very happy with the performance of the system. The monitoring system has been fantastic to ensure we capitalise fully on the investment we have made.

GeoGen guided us through the entire process from start to finish, from the initial G59 and planning applications to installation. The work was done with minimal disruption to the running of the farm, and we would certainly recommend GeoGen to others looking to invest in renewables.
