President’s Message

Summer must be here….. Hope all the Mothers had a Great Day, God knows we deserve it! I know everyone is busy but it is the time of the year when we need to start thinking about our donation quilts for the Vera Lloyd Home and baby quilts for the hospital. Thanks to all who brought baby quilts to the last Guild meeting. Keep in mind we do this for the children. The Quilt Show is almost 1 year away and we have lots to do. I want to let everyone know that the Challenge Rules are on the website. The Quilt Show Committee needs more people to help out with the show… the hard work really begins NOW. We have a great show because of all the HARD work we do long before the show happens. Hope to see some new faces at the Quilt Show meeting the 1st Saturday of the month. I know you are all talented and I hope you share your talents with the members and others who just want to learn more about quilting. I encourage everyone to come to the meetings and have a GOOD time. Hope to see everyone at the May meeting

Hot Springs Area Quilt Guild Minutes

The guild met April 26, 2012 at the National Park Hospital. The meeting was called to order at 6PM by President Beth Wynn, after we had our snacks and social time. Mary Ann

Kerr thanked all our members who brought food.

The previous minutes were approved; the treasurer’s report was approved and will be filed for audit.

Dottie Atkins, membership chair, reported we had 33 members present – one visitor and one new member.

Boutique – Polly and Clarice showed the notions case which includes a

cutting board that was made at this month’s workshop. There will be no workshop in May. They ask that anyone making boutique items at home to please bring them to the meeting and give them to Kathy Hull who is storing the items.

Workshop – May 22nd is the day for the basket quilt being taught by Beth Wynn. If there are not enough signing

up for the class we will still have a workshop and work on aprons for the quilt show volunteers to wear. This

will be held at the Irwin Agency on May 22 at 10AM. We have denim to make the aprons, so bring your machines and please come and help.

.Eddie Landreth showed our next Block of the Month – called Double Z. everyone showed the block they made the previous month. We are having

great participation in this activity. These are blocks from the 1890’s.

Saline County Guild is coming to present our program in June and having a trunk show of their quilts. In return we are taking some of our quilts to their guild on June 18th.

Norma Welch announced we will be starting a new trading patches project

next month. She will explain it and have instructions next month.

Wilma Blair introduced our speaker and the program for the evening. Joyce Ross brought her quilts and fabrics from Nigeria and other African areas from when she lived in Nigeria for 3 years. Her friend, LaVerna Stinnett, came with her and they both wore beautiful Nigerian cotton

dresses. They were made on a treadle machine and were heavily sewn in embroidery designs. Some of her fabrics were hand painted and resembled batiks. She asked a Nigerian designer to make her an owl on some fabric and it very much looked like batik as we know it. She displayed several quilts with unusual designs in the fabric. We enjoyed

listening to how they lived in the area and all learned from her program.

Betty Smith showed several quilts she has made for quilts of valor. If anyone is making or wants to make one, you only need to make the top. She has contacts that she mails them to and they finish them. Give Betty a call if you would like to help.

BIRTHDAY FAT QUARTER BASKET: Be sure to bring fat quarters for the birthday basket. If you bring one you will get a ticket for Special Drawings we will have July and October, winning tickets get 3 fat quarters!!! ALSO when you have a birthday you get to pick 2 fat quarters, so we need a good stash. So… bring fat quarters so we can continue to enjoy this activity. (this is separate from the monthly fat quarter drawing)
