The RooseveltsRoosevelt is a powerful name, for multiple reasons. The Roosevelts: An Intimate History, a new seven-part, 14-hour documentary by Ken Burns, will air for seven consecutive nights beginning Sunday, Sept. 14. The film weaves the stories of Theodore, Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, three members of one of the most prominent and influential families in American politics. The series marks the first time their individual stories have been woven into a single narrative. Airing Sunday-Saturday from 7-9 p.m., with encores immediately following each night from 9-11 p.m., The Roosevelts follows the family’s story for more than a century, from Theodore’s birth in 1858 to Eleanor’s death in 1962. Over the course of those years, Theodore would become the 26th president of the United States and his beloved niece, Eleanor, would marry his fifth cousin, Franklin, who became the 32nd president. Together, they redefined the relationship Americans had with their government and with each other, and redefined, as well, the role of the United

States within the wider world. The series encompasses all the history the Roosevelts helped to make — the creation of National Parks and the digging of the Panama Canal, the New Deal and the defeat of Hitler, and the postwar struggles for civil rights at home and human rights around the world in which Eleanor Roosevelt played a central role. But it is also an intimate human story about love and betrayal, family feeling and personal courage and the conquest of fear.

Legendary actress Meryl Streep portrays Eleanor Roosevelt in readings from her personal letters and writings. Joining Streep are Paul Giamatti as the voice of Theodore Roosevelt and Edward Herrmann, two-time Emmy Award nominee for his performance as Franklin Roosevelt, as the voice of FDR. Rounding out the cast are Patricia Clarkson, Adam Arkin, Philip Bosco, Keith Carradine, Kevin Conway, Ed Harris, John Lithgow, Josh Lucas, Carl Lumbly, Amy Madigan, Carolyn Mc-Cormick, Pamela Reed, Billy Bob Thornton and the late Eli Wallach. The Roosevelts is written by longtime Burns collaborator Geoffrey C. Ward, who is an authority on Franklin Roosevelt.

More music, more dancing, more Cookie Monster! Sesame Street is celebrating 45 years of helping kids grow smarter, stronger and kinder with a new, half-hour afternoon program starting Sept. 1 at 2 p.m., and a new season starting Sept. 15 at 9 a.m.

Arthur, everyone’s favorite Emmy-winning aardvark, is back with a whole new season begin-ning on Sep. 29! Season 18 brings you 10 all-new episodes, with Fall premieres that include a parody of Wizard of Oz in “The Friend Who Wasn’t There” and an homage to film noir with “The Girl with the Long Face.”

And be sure to look for our new local stars as a new season of Rainbow Readers hits air this Labor Day. These video book reports run between kids shows throughout the school year and aim to inspire kids to develop a love of reading by showing them actual kids sharing what books they love and why. Notes from the President & CeOAll roads lead back to central Illinois. I started my public television career in Moline as General Manager of WQPT-Quad Cities PBS. Now, 22 years later, I am thrilled to be back in the heartland and eager to reacquaint myself with Central Illinois. I am excited to have the opportunity to lead WTVP and WILL, two great organizations with decorated histories, dedicated and talented staffs, and ac-tive and invested members. As the new CEO, I look forward to strengthening our collaboration and exploring new ones in order to serve you, our members and viewers, even better. Until I can meet you in person, allow me to tell you a bit about myself. I come to you from Seattle where I served as President and CEO of KCTS-TV for six years, and before that as President and CEO of the South Carolina ETV and Public Radio Network. I also am proud to have served as Lieutenant Commander in the US Naval Reserves. I’ve enjoyed giving back to my various communities through service on various boards. And I thank my wife and two kids for their love and support through all we do

I’m looking forward to being back in Illinois and putting my experience to work for you. The future of public broadcasting is bright and, with your support, we can continue to make great things happen. Thank you for your welcome and good wishes as I settle in September 2. I hope we meet soon.

Across America and around the globe, children are getting sick and dying from prevent-able diseases—in part, because some parents are choosing to skip their children’s shots. How and why do vaccines work? What are the biggest concerns and misconceptions, and what are the risks to the child and society when people decide to forego immunization? The award-winning science series NOvA helps viewers find the answers they need.

Misinformation about vaccines can spread quickly, creating confusion about the relative risks of vaccinat-ing vs. not vaccinating. vaccines-Calling the Shots is an important new film that encourages parents to ask questions and use the best available evidence to make decisions about how to protect their children.

This documentary travels the globe to provide the latest evidence and answers. Featuring scientists, pediatricians, psychologists, an-thropologists, and parents wrestling with vaccine-related questions, the hour-long film explores the history and science behind vaccinations, tracks outbreaks, and sheds light on the risks of opting out.

The film, produced by Tangled Bank Studios in association with Genepool Productions, premieres Wednesday, Sept. 10 at 8 p.m.

Finding your Roots ReturnsThe acclaimed series, Finding your Roots with Henry louis Gates, jr. returns Tuesday, Sep. 23 at 7 p.m. The 10-part series explores the heri-tages and ancestries of 30 of today’s leading entertainers, athletes, chefs and media personalities, including: Ben Affleck, Jessica Alba, Khandi Alexander, Tom Colicchio, Tina Fey, Sally Field, Derek Jeter, Stephen King, Nas, Anna Deavere Smith, Sting, and Courtney Vance.

The basic drive to discover who we are and where we come from was at the core of the first season of Finding your Roots. In the second season, Professor Gates, the Al-phonse Fletcher University Professor at Harvard University and director of the Hutchins Center for African and African American Research, continues his journey into the past to illuminate the familial histories of some of today’s most recognizable names in sports, music, film, televi-sion, theatre and literature.

In each hour-long episode, Dr. Gates continues his quest to, as he says, “get into the DNA of American culture.” By weaving a group of celebrity stories together, each episode takes viewers on a journey through layers of ancestral history, uncovering familial secrets and sharing life-altering discoveries that ultimately reveal an intimate bond that links each individual’s story together.

The series continues Tuesdays at 7 p.m. through Nov. 26.

Emma Thompson and Bryn Terfel sink their teeth into Stephen Sond-heim and Hugh Wheeler’s iconic musical thriller Sweeney Todd in a special concert-style performance premiering Friday, Sept. 26 from 8-10:30 p.m.

live from lincoln Center: Sweeney Todd - The Demon barber of Fleet Street in Concert with the New york Philharmonic, staged in March 2014 to a sold-out crowd at Avery Fisher Hall, tells the story of the eponymous barber who, with his romantically inclined land-lady, Mrs. Lovett the piemaker, seeks vengeance on what he considers a merciless world. The remarkable cast features bass-baritone Bryn Terfel in the title role and Academy Award-winning actress Emma Thompson as Mrs. Lovett, with Christian Borle and more. Audra McDonald hosts the program—and performs in the show.

This extraordinary and star-studded performance is just the beginning of the PBS Arts Fall Festival. Now entering its fourth season, the festival has become a Friday night tradition that will now expand to an 11-week footprint in the WTVP schedule. MakersIn the last half-century, women have fought their way into nearly every sphere of American life, from the battlefield to the comedy club, the soundstage to the Senate. In each field, women have pried open, and profoundly reshaped, the central institutions of American life and culture.

Makers, six new documentaries featuring groundbreaking Ameri-can women in different spheres of influence, tells the stories of prominent women in comedy, Hol-lywood, space, business, politics, and war and relates their struggles, triumphs and contributions as they transformed the landscape of their chosen vocations. The series premieres Sept. 30 at 8 p.m. and continues each Tuesday through Nov. 4. Through intimate interviews with trailblazing women known and unknown, viewers will be given a rare glimpse—some-times funny, sometimes sad, and always candid—of what it was like to be pioneers in their fields.

These documentaries not only tell the stories of women, they are also produced by women and narrated by some famous female actresses including Leslie Mann, Julia Roberts, and Jodie Foster. This new six-part series expands on the critically acclaimed three-hour PBS documentary Makers: Women Who Make America, which premiered in February 2013, and told the story of the American women’s movement over the last half-century.

Not only have they moved their broadcasting back home to Illinois through the WTVP control room, they’ve also just moved into new digs on the campus of Western Illinois University. WQPT General Manager Mary Pruess and WIU Vice President for Quad Cities Planning Joe Rives took time out of moving day to travel to Peoria for a ceremonial countdown to the official launch of their tested and refined broadcast signal. WTVP Operations Manager Jackie Luebcke and Chief Engineer Bill Porter headed the project for WTVP.

Illinois AdventureWelcome to the Adventure! This month, host Jim Wilhelm will be taking you to inter-esting destinations around the state including: the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium at the port of Dubuque to learn about the history of the river and the people who lived along its entire stretch (9/5); Historic Auto Attractions, a museum just north of Rockford that features more than 75 famous and historic vehicles, where a single car led to a collection of Kennedy memorabilia (9/11); and the Hemingway Birthplace Home and the Hemingway Museum in Oak Park (9/25).

At Issue At Issue with H Wayne Wilson returns for a new season of in-depth discussions of issues of impact on central Illinois with the people in the know. The 27th season opens with the following programs:

9/4—Peoria’s Mayor and City Manager Mayor Jim Ardis and City Manager Patrick Urich will discuss issues facing Peoria, including the condition of city roads, the future of the Madison Theater project, the warehouse district and other topics.

9/11—Farmland Conservation To further reduce farm nutrient runoff, this edition will outline a new approach to cre-ating miniature wetlands instead of allowing tile drains to empty directly into ditches.

9/25—Medical Cannabis H and his guests will address the rules, timetable and possible pitfalls of cannabis use for medical purposes in the state of Illinois.

At Issue, hosted by H Wayne Wilson, typically airs Thursdays at 8:30 p.m. with en-cores the following Sundays at 4:30 p.m. The series can also been seen on WORLD Channel-WTVP 47.2 on Fridays at 8:30 p.m. Episodes are also archived on the station website, wtvp.org, after the broadcasts.

4 September 6 & 7—New York State of Mind Take a bite out of the city that never sleeps! Chef Joe Ciminera, host of Taste This, takes you to eat all around the city he loves and shows us why New York is a true melting pot of cultures. Taste all things Italian in the concrete jungle with Chef Lidia Bastianich. Then head uptown to Harlem, with a Moveable Feast prepared by Chef Marcus Samuelsson.

4 September 13 & 14—Take it to Go This time of year, everyone has something to do and some place to go. That means taking the time to make a healthy, home-cooked meal the family can enjoy becomes very difficult. Learn how to create simple, healthful, flavorful meals and a unique bag to take it all with you. Sara Moulton, Laura Theodore and Pati Jinich are the chefs who are up for the challenge along with our sewing maven, Nancy Zieman.

4 September 20 & 21—Wonders of the World Adventure is the order of the day as you globe trek with Darley Newman, Rick Steves, Joseph Rosendo and Rudy Maxa in search of amazing natural and man-made wonders of the world. Get mesmerized over Victoria Falls in Zambia. Cross continents to experience the Taj Mahal. Go under the sea to observe the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. WTvP Profiles Central Illinois “Champions of education”• Marques Lowe of Champaign created a Young Gentleman’s Club for struggling

male adolescents, and runs a private track and field program for area middle and high school students.

• Christopher Koch, Illinois’ state superintendent of education, has spearheaded an effort to improve the training of school principals and implemented a statewide teaching performance standard.

• Trish O’Shaughnessy heads a new college readiness organization for Peoria middle schoolers who attend a weekly club meeting where they talk about careers.

Have you seen these inspirational “Stories of Champions” about three central Illinois community leaders making significant, scalable changes that are preparing students for success? Watch for them in between programs as WTVP gears up for a special marathon about the dropout crisis in America: American Graduate Day 2014.“Stories of Champions” was made possible by a grant from WNET to WILL in part-nership with WTVP and CU-Citizen Access. The stories, each one-and-a-half minutes long, were produced by WILL and crafted by the WTVP Production team. They’ll also air during breaks on WILL-TV, WILL-AM, and WSIU-TV in Carbondale.

“American Graduate: let’s Make It Happen” is a public media initiative – supported by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting – to help students stay on the path to on-time high school graduation and future success. American Graduate Day—airing Saturday, Sept. 27 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.—is a full-day broadcast and outreach event dedicated to engaging our country around the dropout crisis with special celebrity guests, relevant spokespeople and compelling stories from the students themselves. The broadcast will leverage a unique production and community engagement model both locally and nationally. The event will also profile a variety of community-based solutions and give viewers the opportunity to get involved by volunteering their time, talent, or other resources. These efforts aim to ensure that all students realize their full potential through completing their high school education, and beyond.

And these “Stories of Champions” will, hopefully be a part of that national broadcast.“We’re excited to be working together as fellow public broadcasters to produce local stories about people in our communities making significant efforts to change the lives of young people,” said Chet Tomczyk, President and CEO of WTVP and Interim General Manager of WILL (retired). “We love being able to use our combined skills to shine a light on their good work for the state, and possibly country, to see.”

’Tis the Season for Drama & MysteryLark Rise to CandlefordWe are pleased to welcome back Lark Rise to Candleford for a series encore. This winning adaptation of Flora Thompson’s magical memoir of her Oxfordshire childhood is a love letter to a vanished corner of rural England and a heart-warming drama series teeming with wit, wisdom and romance. The encore is scheduled Thursday evenings at 9 p.m. on Aug. 21-Sept. 4, and then moves to Sundays at 3 p.m. beginning Sept. 7.

Miss MarpleAcclaimed British actress Julia McKenzie (“Cranford”) returns to Mas-terpiece Mystery! as spinster sleuth Miss Marple in three new episodes of the popular Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple series. “A Caribbean Mystery” and “Greenshaw’s Folly” premiere with back-to-back episodes at 7 and 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 21, and “Endless Night” airs Sunday, Sept. 28 at 8 p.m. “A Caribbean Mystery” also encores Thursday, Sept. 25 at 9 p.m.

Mystery of Agatha Christie with David SuchetDavid Suchet, TV’s Poirot, has spent more of his life acting out the plots and dramas created by Agatha Christie than anyone else in the world. He now embarks on a journey to learn more about the woman who created him. Suchet learns that it is not just Christie’s novels that are shrouded in mystery. He investigates the adultery of her husband; a betrayal that led to her bizarre disappearance in 1926 when she faked her own death; explores the close links between Christie’s extraordinary life and her work; and discovers just what it is about this late Victorian woman from Torquay that allowed her to become the bestselling murder mystery writer in history—a popularity that continues up to the present. Rejoin the cast of the Victoria-era department store as Masterpiece Classic: The Paradise, Season 2 airs Sundays at 7 p.m. beginning Sept. 28.
