Read Know Your Rotary to tell him what it is
Why Know Your Rotary for new
members on induction
WHEN a prospective member signs the
membership proposal form, he/she, inter-alia,
agrees to abide by the rules and regulations of
Rotary. Without knowing Rotary’s Constitution and other
relevant rules, how can one follow them? That apart, only
a well informed Rotarian can deliver the right service, at the
right place, at the right time. He/she only can create the
true image of Rotary in the community around him/her.
Practically no RI president has failed to reiterate the necessity
for a sound Rotary knowledge for all the Rotarians. Token
examples:
RI President (1924-25) Everett W. Hill: Let us
always bear in mind that each new member we add
to our club decreases the efficiency of the club
unless we educate that member in Rotary.
RI President (1949-50) Percy Hodgson: (We must)
provide more and better Rotary information for the
new member...the entire future of Rotary rests in
the minds of the Rotarians of tomorrow...We should
no more expect a new member to learn Rotary
through assimilation than we would expect a
student to obtain a Master’s degree simply by
walking through our halls of learning.
Present a copy of Know Your Rotary to the new Rotarian
on induction as many clubs are doing now. Many past
governors as well as other veteran Rotarians have said that
this is the best book on Rotary. The small amount you are
ploughing back from the admission fee collected is going to
be an investment which in all probability will build a
d e d i c a t e d
Rotarian whose
contribution to
the club and the
community at
large cannot be
predicted.
And so clubs
may keep a few
copies handy
for presenting to
new members on
induction.

Know Your RotaryFourth edition now on sale
(updated and with another 80 pages of fresh materials)
"Know Your Rotary is a beautifully
produced compendium of knowledge,
history and encouragement. I particularly
refer to some of the sections in the book
that dealt with the subjects that had
undergone many changes. You have
incorporated the latest information from
the last Council On Legislation as also the
Code of Policies. This is incredible.
One can see that this book is not an
ordinary Rotary information publication;
it is a product of commitment to Rotary
and labour of love.
Speaking specially on the Foundation
chapter, you have dealt with all the related
subjects extremely well. I commend you
for including the answers to the questions
that come to the mind of Rotarians as to
why should one contribute to The Rotary
MANY Rotarians need to
know more about what
Rotary is, how it works,
what it does and what it asks for,” said
RI President (1990-’91) Paulo V.C.
Costa.
It is difficult, if not impossible, to
“This is incredible,” says Raja SabooPast RI President Rajendra K. Saboo, the only Indian who
held the positions of RI Presidency as well as Chairmanship
of The Rotary Foundation wrote a letter of appreciation to
the author after reading the fourth edition of the book. Here
are some excerpts:
Foundation . I do hope that the leadership
of Rotary in the districts and clubs will
surely make good use of this valuable
material........
The book you have produced is an
excellent reference material for any
student/practitioner of Rotary….
Rotarians will find the book very
informative and whatever reference they
would want to have could be found in it.
I, however, will encourage the full reading
of the book which will provide deep
insight on Rotary in general and in India
in particular.
I am sorry for the delay in my
response to you but I did not want to
give a perfunctory reaction. I wanted
to be more truthful as what I would
be saying and hence the delay…..".
Why should I buy the fourth
edition? I am having the third
edition with me.
Well, you do require the fourth
edition simply because of the fact
that during the last almost ten
years, while the book was out of
print changes galore have taken
place in Rotary and all these
changes have been incorporated
in the new edition. Apart from that
80 pages of new material have
been added replacing some of the
appendices which are now
available at the RI website.
What are the changes in the
fourth edition?
The fourth edition is certainly not
a rehash of the third edition. New
material and many new pictures
have found their way into the
book while it was revised and
updated. Chronological list of
Rotary countries and year wise
membership and club count have
been added as another appendix.
Most importantly, all the sweeping
changes called for by the historic
Councils on Legislation have
reflected in the book. The chapter
on The Rotary Foundation (TRF)
has expanded to 54 pages in view
of increasing importance of TRF .
Why should a veteran Rotarian
buy Know Your Rotary?
The world is changing. So is
Rotary. As a doc tor needs
Continued Medical Education
(CME) all Rotarians, especially
the past governors, past and
present club presidents, district
officials need regular updating
of their Rotary knowledge. A
large number of Past Distr ict
FAQGovernors have purchased the
book and they have told the
author (and written too) that the
book was of immense use in
the i r Rotary speech
preparations..
I follow all the latest deve-
lopments in Rotary. As such
why should I buy this book?
True, you knew many thingsabout Rotary and you continue tofollow-up Rotary news diligently. But you certainly would havebeen searching at times throughyour vast collections of Rotaryliteratures for that elusive bit ofRotary information which youcould not recollect. In this era ofinformation inundation, even anet search would not have givenyou the appropriate answer toyour doubt. If you have Know
Your Rotary by your side, that willquickly come handy without anywaste of your valuable time toprovide an answer to your doubtor Rotary information that you
need.
Why should the clubs buy the
book apart from individual
Rotarians?
Imparting Rotary knowledge is
one of the prime duties of clubs.
Each club may buy a few copies.
There is 20% discount on orders
of 10 or more copies. If any club
wants to buy the book for all
their members to make the club
100% Rotary l i terati , special
attractive offers will be given. At
any rate each club should ensure
a copy for club use, one copy
for the bulletin editor and a few
copies for new members on
induction.
.
Lo! what they wrote
after reading the fourth
edition:
"Know Your Rotary is
indeed one of the finest
publications I have come
across which deserves all
the appreciation. The
efforts put in by you, the
midnight oil burnt by you
and the sincerity shown by
you in bringing out this
publication is very much
visible. Though this book of
yours reached me
sometime back, yet, you
did not get my response
simply because I wanted
to go through it before
writing to you."
--Ashok MahajanRI Director (2007 - 09) &

rank among the most infor-
mative and well written
books ever written about
Rotary”

know all about Rotary in view of thevastness of the subject. But every Rotarian
is expected to know at least the basics and
should be abreast of the developments in
the Rotary world.
A survey has showed that most of the
Rotarians who leave Rotary possessed little
or no knowledge about Rotary.
To get a fair knowledge about Rotary
you have to read a large number of Rotary
publications. Even then you will have to
run from pillar to post for that evasive bit
of Rotary information. Time consuming
‘Googling’ will not give you any guarantee
on the authenticity of information you get
from various unofficial web sites.
Here is a book that tells you all about
Rotary, an one stop shop source for
Rotary information. More than five years
of research has gone in to the making of
this book. A cursory look at ‘Know Your
Rotary’ will give you a general idea of
Rotary, while a detailed perusal will make
you a Rotary pundit.

2 Know Your Rotary : Introducing the author
RI Director Dr. P.C. Thomas releases the second edition of Know
Your Rotary. Others standing in the picture are Governor(199-00)Dr. Murughanaathan (left) and the author PP. N. Bhaskaran Pillai, draped in “Ponnada” (right)
This is not a resume of the author, only
a few lines, on his contributions to Rotary
and what others said about him.
Joined Rotary Club of Quilon West in
1978. As he learned more about Rotary,
the organization fascinated him and it
began to claim more of his working hours.
In 1983 - 84 he took charge of club’s
weekly bulletin. Publishing a bulletin,
especially a weekly was one of the time-
consuming Rotary jobs. Yet he brought
out the bulletins in style week after week
and became the most popular bulletin in
the district. No wonder his bulletin,
bagged the best bulletin award of the
undivided - District 3210 which included
the entire Sri Lanka.
When he became the club president
in 1985 - 86, it was a full time job for
him. One of his focus areas was club
attendance. Except his installation
The journey to Know Your Rotary ON his migration to Cochin, he joined Rotary Club of Fort
Cochin in 1994. Took up the publishing of club’s monthly
bulletin Fortnet. For three years he did this and all the three
years Fortnet (that was the name of the bulletin) bagged
District’s best bulletin award. Several GMLs reprinted
items from Fortnet which was acclaimed as world-class.
During 1995-96 he was in charge of District Conference
promotion publication, Vision Vista.
When Sunil Zachariah became the District Governor
he requested him to publish a monthly tabloid for the
district for promoting the district projects just like Vision
Vista, he took up the challenging job fully knowing the
work involved. The District governor gave him total
freedom and he was the editor, printer and publisher of
the tabloid.
Having seen the fate of bulletins distributed at the meetings, he
wanted to mail the tabloid individually to Rotarians, if possible to
their residential address itself so that the spouses also would get a
feel of Rotary good news. A comprehensive mailing list was soon
prepared that included all Rotarians of the District, leaders of partners
in service, Innerwheel leaders and all Past District Governors of India.
In order to get postal concessions, the tabloid was registered with
Registrar of News Papers of India, New Delhi. The first issue of the
tabloid, Rotary Dreams 3200 came out in July 1998.
.He made sure that the tabloid was useful to keep the readers
upbeat and up-to-date of what was happening not only in the district
but the Rotary world at large. Writing reports and editing the solicited
items were only part of the story. Type setting, page lay out, selection
of titles and fonts, pre-press work and printing, all were to be done
carefully to make the publication attractive. He had to work like
mad in order to see that each issue was as perfect as possible and
mailed on t ime. He has to handle every
department of the publication except the proof
reading which was done by his wife
commendably, each issue at least half a dozen
times to keep errors at bay. (She did the proof
reading of Know Your Rotary also) To him each
issue was as if his own child.
The saga continued next year also . He
triumphantly brought out another twelve issues
on dot the mailing dates.
Governors and past governors from all over
India liked the publications if the feed back was
any indication.. Rtn. Arun Kumar, Governor
(1998-’99) D. 3070, wrote, “Any District would
be proud of such a Rotarian who brings out Rotary
Dreams regularly.”
Many Past District Governors from various
parts of India wrote to him that they were looking
forward to the next issue, leave alone the case of
Rotarians of his home District. “Your tabloids are
not destined to dust-bins,” wrote one past
governor while many wrote that they preserved the publication for
future reference.
The district also acknowledged his efforts and hard work, by
sponsoring him to attend the International Convention held at
Singapore., Best district officer award was bestowed on him.
It seems that no district in India has tried publishing a monthly
tabloid which was individually mailed to all Rotarians in the district
before or after Rotary Dreams 3200.
Now coming to the book, he started delving deep in to Rotary
history from the early days of his Rotary life. From 1990 onwards he
started collecting materials for the book. His collections also included
most the RI publications released till then. Whenever in doubt, he
cross-checked and vetted the information with RI. He would have
read at least a thousand lines before writing a single line!
The first edition of the book was released in 1998. To the surprise
of the author the entire copies were sold out in less than 100 days. In
2000 the second edition was published and the third the very next
year. While the first edition was published by his home club, the
second and third editions were published by the district.
As he has been spending more time for Rotary than for his own
business/ profession since joining Rotary, his classification rightly
should be “Rotary International.”
meeting, all the meetings of the year
were 100% meetings and the club
achieved an attendance percentage of
99.97% during the year and made
Rotary history. The membership of the
club jumped from 38 to 56 during the
year and the Rotary Foundation Plateau
rose from 0 level to 300%. Purchased a
plot for the construction of a community
hall for the club and sponsored a new
club. He was the first Paul Harris Fellow
of his club.
From 1986 to 1992 he held various
district assignments. He was GGR twice,
Chairman Past Presidents Participation,
Area Co-ordinator - PolioPlus, District
Co-ordinator and District Advisory
Board member. As area co-ordinator of
PolioPlus he collected more than 200%
of Shares specified by RI from the clubs
allotted to him. He served the district
with distinction.
.
About the author’s periodicals
PRID (1995 - 97) (now RI president) Kalyan
Banerjee wrote on October 16, 1998
“The tabloid publication of Dist. 3200 Rotary Dreams is a most
unusual, attractive and interesting publication. .......... I see in this,
a bulletin which one wants to get a copy for oneself to read.”
Charles W. Pratt, the then editor of The Rotarian wrote to the author as early as1990: “You are a true Rotary Historian.”
Again when the author was editor of Fortnet the bulletin of Rotary Club of FortCochin, he (Charles W. Pratt) congratulated him on the “Professionalism andquality and for the excellent job in membership communication.”
A few excerpts from the hundreds of letters Rtn. Bhaskaran Pillai received
about the monthly tabloid Rotary Dreams 3200 which he published for
the District:
“A monthly bulletin with contents like those of Rotary Dreams would involve colossaleffort and perhaps you are doing it as a labour of love.”
Rtn. Panduranga Setty, RI Director (1991-’93)
“Whatever you edit, (Fortnet, Vision Vista or Rotary Dreams) is world class”V.V. Prabhu, (Past President RC of Quilonand bulletin editor for over three decades)
“I am sure you will set new standards in Rotary journalism..”Surendra Seth, Governor (1984-’85), D. 3070
(on seeing the first issue of Rotary Dreams 3200)
“It very well compares with Rotary World sent by RI head quarters.”T.C. Seth, Governor (1985-’86), D. 3110
“Rotary Dreams can be compared to any international publication”A.I. Abraham, Governor (1990-’91), D. 3210
“Hats off to you once again for your selfless service.”C.B. Neelakantaiah, Governor (1989-’90), D.3160
“The colourful layout, beautiful life like reproductions of the photographs, the richRotary information, aesthetically pleasing tabloids make us “Forget Not” Rotary
Dreams 3200.”
Rtn. Dr. T.J. Vyas, Governor (1998-99), D.3140
On October 10, 1999 District Governor of Erstwhile Dist. 3290 and
currently RI Director, Shekhar Mehta wrote: “Inspired by your
excellent publication “Rotary Dreams” we in District 3290 have
emulated your feat and have come out with “Rotary Times.” This
would be a bimonthly publication.

Know Your Rotary -
Fourth edition
ENTIRE gamut of Rotary has
been beautifully covered in 35
chapters spread in about 400
pages. With the fourth edition the
author has moved very close to his
goal to present a book to the Rotary
world covering all aspects of Rotary.
Believe it or not, it took more than
five years’s of studies and research
to publish the first edition in 1998
The second edition was released in
the very next year. The revised and
updated edition was published after
the CoL in 2001. Subsequently the
author could not publish another
edit ion though there was good
demand from all over India.
One peculiarity of the book is
each and every Rotary program has
been traced to its origins. As Cecero
has said, “not knowing what has
happened before you were born, is
to remain a child for ever.’
He has scanned all the 106 years
of Rotary history and have identified
most important events of each of
these years. You can read them in
the last chapter
The revision of the book was
started in 2009 and it took about 18
months for its completion. The book
was not only updated but about 80
pages of fresh material has been
added.
While the fourth edition was
under preparation, the author
constantly asked the question as to
why a Rotarian should contribute to
the Rotary Foundation. When ever
an answer came to his mind, he
noted it down and by the time the
book was finalized he had more than
70 answers. From the 70 he picked
51 answers and incorporated in The
Rotary Foundation chapter. A few
of them are given below:
.
Do you know that the Wall St. Journal has written that The Rotary’s polio
eradication efforts needs to be recognized with Nobel Peace price?
Do you know there is an interact club exclusively for youth offenders at
the Juvenile correctional facility in Columbia?
Do you know what is meant by the zero tolerance policy of RI?
Do you know that the World Community Service (initiated by the first
Indian RI President Nitish Lahary) has now been discontinued?
Do you know that the usage “Rotary Ann” is almost extinct except in India?
Do you know whether the Shelter box project which is now greatly admired
the world over was conceived by Royal Navy search and rescue diver Tom
Henderson and his Rotary club, Rotary Club of Helston Lizard adopted
the same as its millennium project?
Do you know that even though US has the maximum number of Rotarians,
the biggest and the second biggest conventions in Rotary’s history were
held in Japan?
Do you know that RI may not be able to hold an international convention
in India, thanks to lack of the required infrastructure facilities specified
for RI Convention?
Do you know at least three Rotarians from India have entered the Guinness
book of world records and one awareness programme of PolioPlus in India
has entered the Guinness Book of world records?
Do you know the world famous Rhodes Scholarships has been awarded to
7000 students during the last 106 years, Rotary has awarded more than
40,000 scholarships during the last 63 years?
Do you know that the inventor of Oral Polio Vaccine, Dr. Albert Sabin has
said that , “If you had not started PolioPlus in 1985, there would, at the
time of Rotary’s 100th birthday in 2005, be eight million more children
with polio?”
Do you know that Charity Navigator, America’s largest independent charity
evaluator, has given four star rating to The Rotary Foundation?
Do you know that India has overtaken Japan in membership strength, and now
India stands in the number two slot in Rotarian strength, next only to USA?
Do you know that all the three RI Presidents from India hail from one state
in India, West Bengal?
Do you know that the famous Rotarians from India include Ex-prime
minister, I.K.Gujral?
You can get answers to all these questions and many
more. You can also get 51 answers to the one
question as to why a Rotarian should contribute to
The Rotary Foundation. Read Know Your Rotary

Tell-tale inquiries
“When I joined Rotary in 2001 my President
presented me your Book along with pin and
basics. Since then I find it to be very useful
during my tenure as editor, treasurer, sgt-at-
arms, secretary, president, GGR and Asst.
Governor. I just want to know how much should
I pay if I want to distribute it to my club members
coming to 40 numbers.”

District Governor (1997-98), Dist. 3060
Dr. Manoj Desai wrote on April 7, 1999:
“I have heard a lot about your Mini-
Encyclopaedia on Rotary from PRID Kalyan
Banerjee and my DGN Praful Bhatt. I would
love to have two copies of the same”
.....And one from Australia“ A visiting Rotarian who recently enjoyed a Curry
Night that we put on each year to support The
Rotary Foundation, gifted your book to a Past
President and organiser of the event for our Club
Rtn. Raj Chandra. Raj in turn passed in on to me,
due to my Club and District involvement. I have
found your book immensely informative and more
importantly easy to read and understand. The RI
Manual of Procedure I find to be like a contract
document, full of clauses and by no means user
friendly. I have subsequently described and shown
various elements of your book and its readability
to other District 9630 leaders; including the DG,
IPDG, DGE and DGN; all of whom would like a
copy. Congratulations once again on producing
such a valuable and ‘user friendly’ reference. I
look forward to your reply”

Ideal Gift
Several DGE’s have distributed Know Your
Rotary to all the presidents- elect of their
respective districts between 1999 and 2003. One
out going District Governor of District 3240
decided to gift the book to all district officials
who performed well during his gubernatorial
year. When the outgoing District Governor of
District 3202 decided to honour the best region
in his district, the choice of gift naturally fell
on Know Your Rotary. When you think of
giving a gift to Rotarians, always remember,
Know Your Rotary.
‘It is a wonderful resource for
Rotarians to give to their friends, business
associates, and community leaders,’
wrote Rotary News once. “After reading
Know Your Rotary, one will want to
become part of this global forum,” it
added.
Gift the book not only to guest
speakers but to the local library as well,
as a PR initiative.

Must for Bulletin Editors
The most read publication in the Rotary world is the club bulletin.
It is the most vital link in the member communication and as such
the role of club bulletin editor is vital. The author of Know Your
Rotary was club bulletin editor for four years and all the four years
it was adjudged as the best bulletin in the district. Going by the
feed back, all Rotary leaders in India liked his publications. One of
the main reasons for his success as a Rotary communicator is
undoubtedly his Rotary knowledge.
Know Your Rotary can certainly help bulletin editors and will
prove to be a great resource for them!
