On Sunday, November 29, That 1 Guy & the Magic Pipe present Moustaches & Laser Beams with special guest Heatbox. KRVM welcomes the show. Continuing to deliver the unexpected with the most unique live show on the touring circuit today, That 1 Guy returns with the Moustaches & Laser Beams Tour. That 1 Guy (aka Mike Silverman) amazes audiences with performances that are equal parts innovative sonic spectacle and entertaining visual showcase. The Bay Area based classically trained jazz bassist turned musical mad scientist treks across the country with his Magic pipe, a homemade instrument concocted out of steel plumbing tube that allows Silverman to deliver a mind-bending amalgamation of percussive rhythm and sound. As the dynamic one-man band acrobatically bangs away on the pipe, while plucking a single bass string and scatting vocal phrases, he creates digitally enhanced rhythmic grooves that can easily roller coaster from acid jazz cacophony to dance friendly funk. Last here in February, That 1 Guy’s fan base continues to grow with each unique performance. He has also been embraced by his musical peers and predecessors. Silverman spent time on the road with guitarist Buckethead (they played Eugene together in March, 2008) and made an appearance on Tom Waits’ 2006 album Orphans, Brawlers, Bawlers & Bastards. His music has also been featured on the Showtime cult hit Weeds. The “Moustaches & Laser Beams” Tour promises to be That 1 Guy’s most inventive. While the “Moustaches” comes from a composition on the 2007 critically hailed album The Moon Is Disgusting, Silverman is still envisioning the role of the ”Laser Beams.” “I’m upping the ante with the stage show,” says Silverman, There are going to be more visual tricks. I want them to be surprises, and I can’t wait to spring them on people. There will definitely be moustaches, and there may or may not be laser beams. I’ve been fine tuning the pipe all summer and creating a whole different show.” One-man entertainment system Heatbox is touring in support of System, the follow-up release to his critically acclaimed debut album Entertainment. Although making noises and sounds with his mouth since the age of ten, Heatbox hit the scene with Twin Cities- based funk, rock and blues group Root City Band. The group won several awards (including “Best Blues Band of the Twin Cities” in 2006) and Heatbox picked up a few of his own (1st place at the 2007 “Yo The Music” Minneapolis Beatbox Battle) before they parted ways. Tickets are $12 in advance, $14 at the door. Doors open at 7:30 pm and showtime is 8:00. On Thursday, November 19, the CCPA and KRVM proudly welcome the Cherry Poppin’ Daddies’ CD Release Party. Eugene’s most famous musical act, the Cherry Poppin’ Daddies, are celebrating the release of Skaboy JFK: the Skankin’ Hits of the Cherry Poppin’ Daddies on Rock Ridge Music and their own Space Age Bachelor Pad Records. The guys are also celebrating the band’s 20th year in the music business. Like their 1998 multi-platinum smash Zoot Suit Riot: the Swingin’ hits of... the new album will emphasize one genre, this time Ska. Skaboy combines four new recordings with tracks from the group’s earlier catalogue, reflecting all the waves and varieties of Ska: Traditional/Bluebeat (2:29, Soul Cadillac), Two Tone (Hammerblow, Skaboy JFK) and Third Wave (Hi and Lo, Sockable Face Club). There are even funky Fishbone-esque hybrids for good measure: (Slapstick). After experimenting with narrative storytelling through shifting genres on Susquehanna (Latin Pop, Swing, Ska, Glitter Rock), the band felt the need to put out something straight forward and fun, taking a cue from their 1998 compilation CD. “Just as our swing fans did before Zoot Suit Riot, fans of our Ska songs have been suggesting that we release all of them together,” lead singer Steve Perry explained, “so they wouldn’t have to press the skip button over a western swing song with a lap steel, or a Flamenco track. Now they can just throw a Cherry Poppin’ Daddies record on without having to explain, and possibly apologize for, our eclecticism.” Although Eugene audiences familiar with the band’s history would never pigeonhole the Daddies’ style, with Skaboy the Daddies plan to reconnect with a Ska audience that is largely aware of them as merely a swing band. “We toured with many of the iconic ska bands when we were coming up,” Perry said, “the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Fishbone, Reel Big Fish, The Specials, No Doubt, Madness -- but at that time we were really touring behind Zoot Suit Riot, so we didn’t play a ton of Ska in our sets, now we will.” The Cherry Poppin’ Daddies have been selling out shows at the WOW Hall since the late 1980s, although for a time the band’s name was considered “too controversial” to be used in the venue’s promotions. The group had three successful independent releases (all recorded at Eugene’s Gung Ho Recording Studio) before hitting the national stage when Zoot Suit got picked up by Universal Records subsidiary Mojo. The Daddies temporarily benefitted from a nationwide “swing scene” revival. “Even 10 years after that dance craze fizzled, it’s hard for the Daddies to get away from the image of the two-toned loafers and oversized dress jackets,” reports the Register-Guard, “but left to their own devices, the Daddies make weird, unclassifiable music.” Last year the Daddies returned from a creative pause with a new album of all original songs, Susquehanna, and played shows at the WOW Hall in April and November. Says CPD band leader Steve Perry: “We are excited to be working with Rock Ridge Music on the release of Skaboy JFK, because we have had a previous successful working relationship with their CEO Tom Derr, while we were both at Universal Records. Rock Ridge has done a great job promoting and distributing Reel Big Fish records (our ex label mates) and this record is directed at some of the same markets, so it’s a perfect fit for us. We also made a deal to have Rock Ridge distribute and promote our 2008 recording, Susquehanna, which had previously not received distribution outside of our web site. This is our coming-out party after a bit of a self-imposed hiatus, and we are happy to be with a company with such great industry bona fides.” Tickets are $15 in advance, $18 at the door. Doors open at 8:00 pm and showtime is 9:00.

That 1 Guy (aka Mike Silverman) amazes audiences with performances that are equal parts innovative sonic spectacle

and entertaining visual showcase. The Bay Area based classically trained jazz bassist turned musical mad scientist treks across the country with his Magic pipe, a homemade instrument concocted out of steel plumbing tube that allows Silverman to deliver a mind-bending amalgamation of percussive rhythm and sound.

As the dynamic one-man band acrobatically bangs away on the pipe, while plucking a single bass string and scatting

vocal phrases, he creates digitally enhanced rhythmic grooves that can easily roller coaster from acid jazz cacophony to dance friendly funk.

While the “Moustaches” comes from a composition on the 2007 critically hailed album The Moon Is Disgusting, Silverman is still envisioning the role of the ”Laser Beams.”

“I’m upping the ante with the stage show,” says Silverman, There are going to be more visual tricks. I want them to be surprises, and I can’t wait to spring them on people. There will defi nitely be moustaches, and there may or may not be laser beams. I’ve been fi ne tuning the pipe all summer and creating a whole different show.”

One-man entertainment system Heatbox is touring in support of System, the follow-up release to his critically acclaimed debut album Entertainment.

Although making noises and sounds with his mouth since the age of ten, Heatbox hit the scene with Twin Cities-based funk, rock and blues group Root City Band.

Skaboy combines four new recordings with tracks from the group’s earlier catalogue, refl ecting all the waves and varieties of Ska: Traditional/Bluebeat (2:29, Soul Cadillac), Two Tone (Hammerblow, Skaboy JFK) and

Third Wave (Hi and Lo, Sockable Face Club).

Now they can just throw a Cherry Poppin’ Daddies record on without having to explain, and possibly apologize for, our eclecticism.”

Although Eugene audiences familiar with the band’s history would never pigeonhole the Daddies’ style, with Skaboy the Daddies plan to reconnect with a Ska audience that is largely aware of them as merely a swing band.

“We toured with many of the iconic ska bands when we were coming up,” Perry said, “the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Fishbone, Reel Big Fish, The Specials, No Doubt, Madness -- but at that time we were really touring behind Zoot Suit Riot, so we didn’t play a ton of Ska in our sets, now we will.”

The Cherry Poppin’ Daddies have been selling out shows at the WOW Hall since the late 1980s, although for a time the band’s name was considered “too controversial” to be used in the venue’s promotions. The group had three successful independent

releases (all recorded at Eugene’s Gung Ho Recording Studio) before hitting the national stage when Zoot Suit got picked up by Universal Records subsidiary Mojo. The Daddies temporarily benefi tted from a nationwide “swing scene” revival.

“Even 10 years after that dance craze fi zzled, it’s hard for the Daddies to get away from the image of the two-toned loafers and oversized dress jackets,” reports the Register-Guard, “but left to their own devices, the Daddies make weird, unclassifi able music.”

That 1 Guy Presents Moustaches & Laserbeams

Page 2: WOW Hall Notes - November 2009

On Monday, November 2, U. of O. Campus Radio 88.1 FM KWVA proudly welcomes Citizen Fish back to the WOW Hall along with Star #$%&ing Hipsters, Molotov Compromise and Eugene’s own Pirate Radio.

For over a decade Citizen Fish has been touring the world -- turning gatherings, benefi ts, and social gigs into an international never-ending weekend. These four dudes from the UK, Dick (vocals), Phil (guitar), Jasper (bass) and Trotsky (drums) have created a blend of punk, ska and straight up rock ‘n’ roll that appeals to the sing-a-long music fans and even those who typically dismiss punks as not being able to play their instruments. But it’s not so much the fact that these dudes are talented musicians, it’s what they say and how they say it. In a fun loving, all inclusive way, Citizen Fish (and their previous outfi ts Culture Shock and the legendary Subhumans) have brought working class radical politics to generations of

questioning minds. Leaving aside the typical

screaming rants of boring political punk bands, the Fish offer a hopeful, danceable alternative. Whereas other bands have fans, admirers, and fl avor-of-the-month teenyboppers hoarding to their concerts, Citizen Fish have established an open and always growing family. The idealistic unifying tone of Dick’s lyrics, coupled with the catchy driving riffs of the band, allow the Fish to appeal to a wide variety of folks. Familiar dancing faces in every town, beers and vegetarian meals, and local activists fi lling the gig halls with information, ideas, and inspiration for positive change is what Citizen Fish are all about.

Star #$%&ing Hipsters is a smoking-hot supergroup featuring Sturg Crack (Leftover Crack, Choking Victim) and Frank Piegaro (Degenerics) along with Nico de Gallo (Casa de Chihuahua). Their second

record and Alternative Tentacles debut, Never Rest In Peace, combines melodic punk and metal with a token ska tune that features Citizen Fish. The followup to 20008’s Fat Wreck Chords release Until We’re Dead, Never Rest In Peace is the result of a year of live shows, writing, and off-the-map creativity from Sturg - aiming for consistency and a sharper edge with a couple of songs that border on crust-core-style metal.

Recorded by Ryan D. Jones in NYC (almost entirely in the band-members bedrooms at the world famous C-Squat on the Lower East Side) and mastered by Howie Weinberg (Beastie Boys, Metallica, Ramones, Rancid, Nirvana, Slayer), Never Rest In Peace features 13 blunt songs of rebellion and revolution. This is the best sounding record Stza’s done since Choking Victim’s classic No Gods/No Managers.

The upcoming November 2009 West Coast Tour with Citizen Fish will include Alternative Tentacles 30th Anniversary Festival.

Tickets are $10 in advance or at the door. Doors open at 7:30 pm and showtime is 8:00. ★

by Sherry FranzenHere’s an update on what

been going on with your Board of Directors.

One current and one previous board member, along with a staff representative, recently traveled to Portland to attend a conference organized by the Oregon Arts Commission, coming away with an inspiring focus on sustainable practices in guiding our organization, with an eye on the economic recession.

A Meyer Memorial Trust proposal has been submitted. If awarded this, and a possible matching grant, will enable us to hire a strategic planner to explore the value of hiring a person to coordinate operations -- to include raising funds, networking, and serving as liaison between staff and board.

A new State Historic

Preservation Offi ce grant is under way, with funds designated to include restoration of the pews and windows in the main hall, repairing water damage, and enhancing sound attenuation and acoustic treatment.

There’s a call for volunteers interested in serving on the Education Committee, with the goal of increasing support for classes to be held in the WOW Hall. Call and leave your contact information.

University of Oregon Theater Department icon Horace Robinson passed away on October 13 at the age of 99. He donated the fi rst set of theater lights at the WOW Hall in 1975. Some of that set is still in use!

Hey, I’m a big fan of University of Oregon Campus Radio 88.1 FM KWVA and if you are too, please come and help support

the station and the WOW Hall at the 3rd annual Music Fair and Record Swap, being held Saturday, Nov. 7 in the EMU Fir Room on campus. Admission is free and there’s sure to be bargains.

Our next Board of Directors meeting is scheduled for Thursday, November 12, at 6:30 pm upstairs in the Growers Market building (454 Willamette). All CCPA Board meetings are open to the public with an opportunity for public comments.

Saturday, December 12, is the date for our annual WOW Hall Membership Party. Entertainment will include singer-songwriters Halie Loren and David Rogers and the return of Accordion-Okie! -- hosted by Queen Accordionna and The Accordion-Oke! All Stars. Mark your calendars! ★

On Thursday, November 12, U. of O. Campus Radio 88.1 FM KWVA proudly welcomes Mission of Burma with special guests Explode Into Colors.

Mission of Burma is touring in support of their new Matador Records release, The Sound The Speed The Light. Recorded in Boston with Bob Weston at the controls, the record is a departure from the pinned-needles roar of 2006’s The Obliterati. The new album sounds far more spacious and dynamic. It is more or less divided into four sets or suites of three songs. Each suite explores a set of moods or colors, across the usual dizzying array of lyrical topics, from alcoholism to fl eshly concerns.

Of course, all the Burma trademarks are also present: the military snare drum, the melodic basslines high up on the neck, and the furiously experimental guitar work, refracted and changed back into the songs via tape loops -- all punctuated by the hoarse shouts of drummer Peter Prescott. This controlled chaos, this disciplined letting go, is the heart of what they do and it remains as exhilarating and fulfi lling as ever.

Mission of Burma formed in 1979 and disbanded in 1983, after establishing themselves as one of the most progressive, important, and loud bands in American rock. The members pursued other projects until reuniting in January 2002 for a series of shows that gave way to more shows and eventually to 2004’s ONoffON, Echoing a common sentiment, Billboard called ONoffON “shocking…. How can it be that

Mission of Burma, 22 years down the line, sounds so good it makes almost everybody else look bad, and many of its erstwhile peers look worse?”

With three principal songwriters, Burma records have always stressed diversity. Band members are: Roger Miller (guitar, vocals), Clint Conley (bass, vocals), Peter Prescott (drums, vocals) and Bob Weston (production, tape manipulation) who replaced original member Martin Swope.

During Mission Of Burma’s ‘79-’83 tenure, they released one album, one EP and two singles for Ace Of Hearts, all of which were later reissued on CD by Rykodisc. Though they’d share stages with the likes of Sonic Youth, Pere Ubu, Gang Of Four, Black Flag and other icons of the rock underground’s golden era, Mission Of Burma never quite achieved their worldwide popularity. However, since that time their musical infl uence has taken on mythic form. The number of bands who have cited Burma’s infl uence is in obverse

proportion to the group’s record sales in 1983 – and it would not be an exaggeration to say they had more of a media presence during their hibernation than during their initial existence.

Explode Into Colors burst onto the Portland scene last year and have been the talk of the town ever since. EIC were recently voted Best New Band by a jury of their peers in the Willamette Week, an artist to watch by XLR8R, and one of the top 10 bands of SXSW 2009 according to the NME.

“Although two members of Explode Into Colors met in a West African drumming class at Evergreen State College, this Portland-based all-girl trio isn’t making crunchy hippie music,” reports XLR8R. “With a percussion-heavy sound that recalls bands like The Slits, the band is another entry in the Pacifi c Northwest’s long history of angular post-punk bands with a pop heart.”

Tickets are $13 in advance, $15 at the door. Doors open at 7:00 pm and showtime is 8:00. ★

by Wes ShirleyNearing the ten year

anniversary of N30 (November 30th), WOW Hall will host a celebration of the victories of social justice and labor advocates on that historic day in Seattle. It was a day when tens of thousands of environmental, labor and social justice activists gathered, creating a never before seen coalition that converged on Seattle to shut down the World Trade Organization’s (WTO) ministerial meeting. Because of the dedication of so many activists, global trade policies came to the fore, no longer negotiated by powerful interests away from public view.

To celebrate, groups including Oregon Fair Trade Coalition, Lane County Central Labor Council, Community Alliance for Lane County, the Latin American Solidarity Committee and others are putting on a night of music, fi lm and speakers on Saturday, November 21.

Beginning the night will be the documentary This is What Democracy Looks Like, a fi lm that includes interviews with critics of global free trade, as

well as scenes from the streets of Seattle as activists and police clashed. It captures in both mood and philosophy what brought so many people to Seattle in November 1999.

Following the fi lm, The Sugar Beets will perform. The Sugar Beets have been playing music for going on twenty years, having established themselves as one of the most delightful live bands to come out of Eugene. The eight member band plays danceable folk rock, bringing Celtic, blues, bluegrass and jam band infl uences together, creating a eclectic sound full of interesting textures and intricate harmonies.

Following the Beets, Portland’s New Mexican Revolution will close the night. Combining Americana with the rhythms, melodies and instrumentation of Eastern European gypsy and klezmer music, they bring a blend of infl uences (and a veteran of the Battle in Seattle) to their high energy performances.

Formed in Portland in 2004, The New Mexican Revolution released their third album, Black Mesa Songs, earlier this year.

Tickets are $5-15 sliding scale at the door. No one will be turned away for lack of funds. Doors open at 6:30, with the fi lm beginning at 6:45. ★

By Rachel KipnisComing to Eugene on

Monday, November 9, is hip-hop sensation and controversial rap artist Immortal Technique with special guests Diabolic, Poison Pen, Swave Sevah and Chino XL. U. of O. Campus Radio 88.1 FM KWVA welcomes the show.

Technique’s hip-hop album entitled The 3rd World is hip-hop bliss if you are an Immortal Technique fan and his live performance will not disappoint! New songs like “Hollywood Driveby” and “Harlem Renaissance” are reminiscent of his childhood and traveling all over on tour dates.

Stage name Immortal Technique has a real name of Felipe Coronel. He was born February 19, 1978 in Lima, Peru although he was raised in Brooklyn, New York. His fan base as an American rapper knows him with a background in political activism within his lyrics. He has stated that he wants to stay in charge of his own production, which is why he has not signed with offers from

Def Jam Records and a Sony development plan. This has led to a strong and dedicated fan base across the nation with its origin in New York City. He has sold over 200,000 records and has four offi cial releases since 2000.

In his earlier life Tech attended Pennsylvania State University for a few semesters and took a few science classes at Baruch University -- getting in trouble with the law along the way. His songs can stem from his struggles with the law and racism within it. Coronel began selling his music on the streets of New York while battling in local MC clubs to get his name out. He matched up with well-known MC’s such as Braggin’ Rites.

In 2001 Tech released his fi rst record Revolutionary Volume 1, which included his infamous song entitled “Dancing with the Devil” -- seen by most critics as extremely violent and graphic. Other famous songs on this record include “Industrial Revolution” and “Unsigned Hype”. His controversial song

“Bin Laden” was released in 2004 and featured famous hip-hop stars such as Most Def and Jadakiss talking about September 11 and implying that George Bush and fellow executives were largely to blame.

Immortal Technique’s third album entitled The 3rd World sold over 54,000 copies and was given many Hip-Hop music awards. In 2009 he released his fourth album called Voice of the Voiceless, a collaboration between Immortal Technique and Lowkey, which was launched on September 21, 2009 on iTunes. This album raps a lot about racism, social injustice, war, world revolution and socialism. There is said to be a new album release in 2010 called Revolutionary 3.

Playing at WOW Hall along with Immortal Technique is Diabolic, Chino XL, a rapper from New York, and Swave Sevah another famous socialist rapper from New York.

Tickets are $16 in advance and $18 at the door. Doors open at 8:00 pm and showtime is 9:00. ★

On Saturday, November 7, SAMM makes his WOW Hall debut.Sam Martin aka SAMM grew up in the Portland Area, went to college

at Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA and released his self-titled debut cd, SAMM in June this year on Itunes. He signed with EMI CMG Publishing in Nashville.

“In an era where music is reduced to simple formulas -- guitar, bass, drums, verse, chorus -- this record shows the listener that there is more than one way to write a pop song,” notes Itunes. ”This album is fi lled with strong melodies and innovative instrumentation. It is at its best when the artist takes the most risks...”

“The ideas come from everywhere,” says SAMM. “There are no rules. When I was in high school I set up the chairs for the church services at Marylhurst. While I worked, the janitor vacuumed. I’d make up songs to the hum of the vacuum. John Lennon used the wee-ahh, wee-ahh sound of an ambulance when writing ‘I Am the Walrus.’ ‘I am he, as your are he, as you are me…’ Can you hear that?”

Martin carries a spy-sized tape recorder with him everywhere. He is constantly humming melodies, recording lyrics and making notes to himself. Some of his best ideas come right before he falls asleep at night.

The lyrics are much more diffi cult for Martin.“I want to be as honest as possible. I have no interest in manipulating

anyone into my beliefs, and I am certainly no evangelist, but if I happen to stumble across something that resonates with the human soul, then I am thrilled.”

Itunes reports that, “The opening piano driven number, ‘Symphony From The Sky’, excels on its

soaring vocals and surprisingly numerous layered harmonies. The rest of the album generally follows suit. ’We Are All The Same’ and ‘The Sun Still Rises’ nicely display the artist’s ability to abandon the traditional electric guitar or the pop melange of

sounds in favor of violins and cellos. In doing so, he delivers a unique sound that is still within the mainstream. ‘We’ve Been Caught Dancing’ is equally unusual as the artist

somehow achieves an intimate pop song without compromising its epic proportions.

‘This One Has Flown’, one of the quieter tracks, demonstrates Samm’s enviable

falsetto range.“However, nothing on

this album is more innovative than ‘Nocturne From Another Man’s Rain’ -- in it, Samm throws all mainstream pop conventionalism to the wind in order to capture an otherworldly

sound that is truly rare in today’s musical landscape.”

“I often write pages of stream-of-consciousness ideas,” comments SAMM. “Even with a great melody, bad lyrics can

ruin a song. I think my best lyrics ever are in ‘We’ve Been Caught Dancing’ on my new

CD.”Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door,

available at WOW Hall and www.ticketweb.com. Doors open at 7:00 pm and showtime is 8:00. ★

On Sunday, November 22, U. of O. Campus Radio 88.1 FM KWVA proudly welcomes CunninLynguists’ Strange Journey Tour with special guests Grieves with Budo, Looptroop Rockers and Tunji.

CunninLynguists are touring in support of their new album Strange Journey Volume Two, which was released in June. Strange Journey Volume Two features E-40, Evidence (of Dilated Peoples), Sean Price, Geologic (of Blue Scholars), Tonedeff, Grieves, Freddie Gibbs, Poison Pen, Substantial and more! Production is by Kno, J-Zone and Blue Sky Black Death.

Featuring emcees Natti and Deacon The Villain trading verses with Evidence of Dilated Peoples and Bay Area legend E-40 about society’s uptick in chaos and violence, CunninLynguists ‘“Running Wild” is the offi cial fi rst single from Strange Journey Volume Two, the second installment of this year’s double release from the trio.

There has never been an anomaly in hip-hop quite like the southern trio CunninLynguists. Sampling genres from psych-rock to blues, New Romantic to polka, they have been musically compared to UGK and Atmosphere in the

same breath. They have toured and shared stages with Kanye West and Aesop Rock to equal success. They have produced for Lil’ Scrappy as well as KRS-One. They have crafted songs with international soul superstar Cee-Lo Green and politically charged indie-favorite Immortal Technique...on the same album. CunninLynguists have eschewed categories, boxes and labels for seven years, four albums and two offi cial mixtapes, all while having what XXL Magazine described as the “Most Hated Name In Rap”.

Since the release of his fi rst full length album, Irreversible, Grieves has been called a breath of fresh air, a breakaway phenomenon, and a lyrical mastermind.

Following Grieves’ encouraging reception and a stint on the CMJ Top 20 Hip Hop charts, fans speculated on what would be next for the emergent artist. 88 Keys and Counting is the response. A joint venture with friend and renowned Seattle based producer, Budo, 88 Keys is a matured record with themes that will challenge fans old and new alike. Armed with a distinct and fl uid sound that will delight your ears and rouse your cerebrum, Grieves’ second effort is not to be overlooked.

After last year’s success in Europe with the album Good Things, which was nominated for a Grammy in their native Sweden, Looptroop Rockers are now taking aim at the US. In mid August the album was released across the pond and the response so far has been nothing but positive. This fall the group will tour the US as one of the few European hip-hop acts to ever tour the country where the genre was born. Together with their buddies in CunninLynguists they will lay siege on 30 cities. It will almost be Christmas before Embee, Supreme and Promoe return home to start recording their next full length.

Tickets are $13 in advance, $15 at the door. Doors open at 7:30 pm and showtime is 8:00. ★

by Melinda Mary HugoOn Friday, November 27, GRRRLZ ROCK presents a spirited high

energy show mixing hip hop, blues, rock and reggae with the visual delights of fi re and tantalizing interpretive dance. Staging reggae-infl uenced dance music, The T-Club, along with the SolaRay Fire Tribe, will top off an evening also featuring the Beat Crunchers, Sue Grass featuring Fiddlin’ Big Sue, Bajuana Tea, Phenomenon Dance Company and Luminessah.

GRRRLZ ROCK is a month-long festival in the greater Eugene area celebrating the contributions women make to the local arts. Music, dance, theater, visual arts and comedy are all part of what defi nes GRRRLZ ROCK. Served up together, they unite our community in support of equality, empowerment and good old fashioned rock n roll. Now in its fourth year, GRRRLZ ROCK continues to grow, rounding out its concert series with a tantalizing potluck of other powerful, focused and exciting events, for the purpose of encouraging intelligent discourse on gender, safety, sexuality, health, happiness and good times for women of all ages.

The WOW Hall show brings together bands and tribes all featuring formidable women in the nature of GRRRLZ ROCK.

Following up the release of their latest album, We All Live As One, The T Club will bring their rock-Latin rhythm-psychedelic jam-infused reggae back to the WOW Hall where they were named Best New Band in 2008. Their mission is to keep the crowd smiling while they dance away to the upbeat socially conscious tunes.

Highlighting The T Club’s performance with their ethereal fi re dancing is the SolaRay Fire Tribe who will be spinning LED lights for the indoor event.

Sue Grass featuring Fiddlin’ Big Sue have been fi ddling and picking good old time music for more than three decades. With their cheerfully animated bluegrass, newgrass and swing, they add some traditional acoustic instrumentation to the event.

The Beat Crunchers, the funky culmination of assorted side projects of a Brazilian percussion group, offers hip hop steeped in Brazilian and Afro-Cuban rhythms for the crowd’s dancing pleasure.

Back for their third year with GRRRLZ ROCK and a favorite of local bistros and watering holes, Bajuana Tea will warm things up with their soulful, smoky rock-blues blend heavy on the beats and reminiscent of emotionally-charged folk music. In ten years of creating music together, the duo has amassed a variety of songs on two electric albums and their fi rst acoustic recording, Take A Sip, released this year.

Admission is $6 (free with a VIP pass). Doors open at 6:30 pm and showtime is 7:00. ★

On Friday, November 6, 541musicscene.com hosts the second in a series of local music shows at the WOW Hall featuring Of Mountains, The ILLusionists, The Last and Mascot plus special guest headliner Aerodrone.

op / rock / electro outfi t Aerodrone formed and got its start in Eugene, where they have carved out a signifi cant following before moving to Los Angeles. The group’s single “Sceneboy” has spawned a Youtube following and has been described by the Knitting Factory in Hollywood as, “destined for great things, at least the conquering of all iPods in the free world.” The band recently got play on LA’s Indie 103.1 and as well as LA’s leading rock station KROQ.

The band has been touring both nationally and regionally with acts like Freezepop, Chromeo, Hypercrush, The Ready Set, Apoptygma Berzerk and has gotten the Featured Artist Spot on the social giant Myspace.com, support slots on MTVU’s Rock Band tour and the Band Of The Week spotlight on MTVU’s show The Freshmen. Top reviews followed from sites like AbsolutePunk.net and KingsOfAR.com. Recently, legendary producer Mark Needham, well known for his work with The Killers, Fleetwood Mac, and InnerParty System has been mixing new tracks by the band at his LA studio.

With a Hot Topic distribution

deal in hand as well as a marketing deal with Myspace Records, the band continues to push forward with frontman / composer Gary Zon on vocals, Kevin Patrick on guitar and TZA on keyboards. Additional live members Joel (drums) and Daniel (bass) take the energy up a few notches.

Aerodrone defi nitely takes you for a ride you’re not expecting with its poppy synth-driven energetic hooks and tongue-in-cheek lyrics that dig in deeper than your familiar current electro pop-fl uff band. While borrowing from The Faint, The Killers and Jimmy Eat World the band also is very much Nine Inch Nails inspired in form, especially with the seductive tune “Hold Me Like A Microphone”.

BeatCrave.com’s “LA Bands You Need To Know” report states: “After transplanting themselves from Oregon to Los Angeles, Aerodrone have been working hard and playing harder. Their music is a combination of emo and electro punk with a huge splash of neon. Not only are they rad enough to rock the keytar, they’re also talented enough to create tunes that are danceable, singable, and altogether memorable.”

Drawing inspiration from multiple genres, Eugene’s Of Mountains are the perfect fusion of pop and rock. Singer and guitarist Josh Jerin lays down catchy hooks over the top of lead guitarist Leif Carpenter’s intricate

lead lines. Kellen Holte’s drum rhythms go hand-in-hand with bassist Chris Lucia’s driving bass lines, combining to form one of Eugene’s most powerful rhythm sections. Of Mountains boasts an energetic live show, for fans of rock music that like a poppy overtone -- without the sugary, bubble-gum, over-the-top production.

For the last year or so, The ILLusionists have been making a name for themselves. Playing to audiences from hip-hop (KI Design, Endr Won) to metal (I’m A Tornado, Death Rides A Horse), the trio has developed an eclectic group of listeners because they are—above all—entertainers.

After only two months together, The ILL produced an 18-track epic (and often hilarious) debut, titled Sleep Rocking. Proclaiming “Anti-Wack” status, they were outspoken against the generic, mainstream hip-hop that plagues the radio waves today. Due to current sampling laws, the album was manufactured and then given away to listeners for free.

Since then, the group has added a few members and taken their samples to the stage with a live band. Hundreds fi lled the WOW Hall to see their new lineup this summer. And with all the anticipation before the show, it was captured on tape.

Now, The ILLusionists will return to the stage with a brand new album. Boasting their brand of shameless ambition, ILL IS ALL features a studio disc full of brand new material and a second disc of the entire live recording, mixed and mastered for your pleasure.

The Last is an electro/hardcore band from Springfi eld, formed in 2008 and consisting of Brady Hyde on vocals and keys, Devin Holmes on bass, and Steve Hoshaw on guitar.

“Folky pop from Eugene, Mascot formed in 2006 and consists of Heath Merryman on vocals, Alex Acuna on guitar and Kelln Holte on drums.

Tickets are $5 in advance or at the door. Doors open at 8:30 pm and showtime is 9:00. ★

On Friday, November 20, Indubious, The T-Club and Basin & Range perform a Benefi t for S.A.R.A.’s Treasures and Pro-Bone-O.

Indubious believes that the time has come for a revolution. Not a revolution with guns and bombs. A peaceful revolution. A musical revolution. An artistic revolution bringing us back to our ancient roots as big hearted humanitarians. A revolution of unity. An awakening to our Oneness.

“We stand for positive thinking and manifestation,” states the band’s manifesto. “We stand for speaking the truth. We stand for the eradication of fear. We stand for Spirit. All is possible when we all stand for these precepts.”

Indubious band mates and brothers Spencer Burton (bass, vocals) and Evan

Burton (keyboards, vocals), along with drummer Matt Wells, are about to release a new CD, Cozmic Seed, that features guest stars Alcyon Massive and Prezident Brown.

Over the past few months The T Club has performed at Reggae on the Mountain, 10 Mile Jam, Jefferson State Free Music Fest and Food Drive and Earthdance. Band members include Nate York (vocals, guitar), Michelle Bellamy (vocals), Ambur Rose (vocals), Mark Anderson (bass), Dj Redeye (keys, turntables, percussion), Peter Merkx (percussion), Mike D (sax, vocals), Brian Y (drums), Eric Edmondson (trombone) and Mizzah (didgeridoo).

Citing infl uences as varied as King Crimson, Jaga Jazzist & Tortoise, Basin & Range weaves together elements of funk, rock, dance and hip-hop. With the current

line-up of maxophone, bass, drums and various electronics, B&R crafts a blend of dirty instrumental compositions that are equally dance-heavy and intelligent.

Founded in 2001, the Shelter Animal Resource Alliance (S.A.R.A.) is a non profi t organization whose mission is to rescue, assist and advocate for dogs and cats at local and regional animal control shelters.

S.A.R.A.’s Treasures, a thrift store at 871 River Road in Eugene, is always home to rescued cats and kittens available for adoption. Sales of the donated items

provide the major funding of S.A.R.A.’s shelter cat and dog rescue programs, and it’s a wonderful place for prospective adopters to meet and spend time with the kitties.

Donations are gratefully accepted at any time during the shop hours: Monday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Pro-Bone-O is a nonprofi t organization that provides free veterinary services, food and supplies for the pets of people who are homeless in the Lane County area.

The services are provided through clinics held the 2nd and 4th Sundays of each month, except May, November and December when clinics are held on the 2nd Sunday. The clinics are set up in space donated by St. Vincent dePaul at its Lindholm Service Center, 450 Hwy. 99 N. in Eugene. Clinic hours are 9:00 am until 1:00 pm. A lottery system determines the order clients are seen.

Doors open at 7:00 pm and showtime is 8:00. Admission is by donation at the door. ★

On Tuesday, November 10, Tyrone Wells will headline a Benefi t for Eugene and Corvallis Young Life along with Rootdown and special guests.

Tyrone Wells has delivered an epic pop/rock album with his second major label effort, Remain. Pursuing a more collaborative process and having added a more lush production to his singer- songwriter roots, the new album proves to be a great showcase for his powerful and emotional voice. The Spokane, WA native’s desire to ‘open up the process’ found him traveling to London to work with a circle of songwriters/musicians who aligned with Wells’ musical direction.

“Half of the album was done in London and the other half completed here in the states,” says Wells. “I didn’t know what kind of record I was going to make before I got to London, but something just seemed to click while I was there that really defi ned what I wanted to do with this album.”

Invoking a cathartic creative

process from the very beginning for Remain, the songwriter penned an astounding 60 songs for the record. Creating a work that manages to be more guitar-edged than previous Wells’ efforts -- but still unabashedly soul-baring -- he appreciated huddling with collaborators like Martin Terefe (Jason Mraz, KT Tunstall, James Morrison) , who - like Wells - is a big believer in trusting one’s instincts. “Losing Ground”, one of a handful of production/songwriting collaborations between Wells and Terefe, was written and demoed in less than three hours during their fi rst writing session together.

Wells has found himself on a new musical path on his second Universal Republic effort, but he continues to display the same gritty determination and work ethic that has enabled him to chart his own course from the very beginning. Wells launched his career with 2003’s Snapshot. An in-demand live offering followed in 2005: Close: Live at McClain’s, capturing the singer’s unique intimacy with an audience.

Soon, major labels came calling. “All of a sudden, after fi ve years of doing everything on my own steam, I had all these labels interested,” says Wells. His 2007 release, the soulful Hold On, was originally his third indie record. The album was picked up by Universal Republic and released untouched as his major label debut.

The buzz surrounding Wells’ inspiring wealth of songs was also beginning to land him song placements in fi lms and TV shows. To date Tyrone has had signifi cant placements including One Tree Hill, Everyone’s Hero, Rescue Me, Ghost Whisperer, Numbers, Criminal Minds, Army Wives, What About Brian, The 50 Greatest Moments at Madison Square Garden and the Rails & Ties trailer.

“With constant touring it’s important to believe in what you’re singing every night,” says Wells. “I’m excited about this new material and believe in these songs. I like where I’m going.”

Rootdown’s infectious enthusiasm will have you smiling and moving your feet from the door to the dance fl oor. Combining elements of pop, rock and reggae, their live performance is like a vibrant mood of sunshine even when it’s raining.

Rootdown was created in 2007 by solo national touring/recording artist Paul Wright while living in San Diego. They have been asked to open for Pepper, The Wailers and many more. Wright has been touring himself seven years full-time, playing alongside bands like TobyMAC, Switchfoot, Shawn McDonald and many more.

Rootdown’s music falls into the “pop/rock/reggae” genre whose roots stretch from Bob Marley and Sublime to Pepper and Slightly Stoopid. Rootdown released their fi rst self-titled EP in 2007 and this July released Summer of Love. Tracks include “Taking Over Me”, “Sweet Love” and the ode to their favorite Oregon Mexican restaurant, “Burrito Boy”.

Tickets are $15 in advance, $17 at the door. Doors open at 7:00 pm and showtime is 7:30. ★

On Saturday, November 28, The Athiarchists host an EP Release Party at the WOW Hall with special guests Rob Olsen, Better Left Unsaid, Big Hammer Theory, Overfl ow and SlayPainYerCBreeDCPro.

It’s getting to be a tradition at the WOW Hall. The Athiarchists headline a show and give away lots of free stuff. This time fans will be treated to a free copy of The Athiarchists new 5-song CD and, of course, hot dogs. The Athiarchists have been fi ring up the bar-b-que grill before shows for some time now and treating folks to hot dogs. The grill has become so popular that this time around it’s going to be located behind the fence, so you’ll have to buy a ticket to eat a dog.

The Athiarchists are a two piece hardcore thrash metal band consisting of Aaron Tunnell (guitar/bass, vocals) and The Myrmidon/Animal (drums, vocals). The duo’s community spirit and DIY work ethic have earned them many devoted fans and friends within the music business. The Athiarchists have shared the stage with: Hatebreed, Pro-Pain, Devildriver, Snot, Sworn Enemy, 3 Inches of Blood, Toxic Holocaust, Straight Line Stitch, Better Left Unsaid and dozens of others, and that’s not counting the parking lot shows!

In addition to their marathon headlining sets, The Athiarchists have another tradition. Proud of their history as everyone’s emergency opening act, The Athiarchists often both open and close their shows. This time around the opener is SlayPainYerCBreeDC, which is The Athiarchists’ Slayer Hatebreed Pro-Pain and AC/DC cover band.

The Athiarchists are going to be fi lming for a new Live DVD as well as giving away the new three song EP from the new CD that should be fi nished this spring/summer.

Tickets are $5 in advance, $7 at the door. Doors open at 7:00 pm and the show starts at 7:30. Better get there early if you want a hot dog. ★

On Friday, November 13, KRVM welcomes Sleepytime Gorilla Museum and Faun Fables back to the WOW Hall.

Oakland, California based acts Sleepytime Gorilla Museum and Faun Fables have two commonalities that immediately come to mind. Both acts debuted at the WOW Hall in support of Secret Chiefs 3, and both acts share Nils Frykdahl as a band member.

The Sleepytime Gorilla Museum may have opened its doors to the public in 1916, but they didn’t make it to the WOW Hall until this century. They fuse classical, industrial, and art-rock themes in their music and are known to perform elaborate routines on stage.

Founding band members Dan Rathbun, Nils Frykdahl and Carla Kihlsted already had some shared history in the bands Idiot Flesh and Charming Hostess before Sleepytime Gorilla Museum gave its fi rst performance (rumor is their fi rst audience consisted of a single banana slug). The band released their debut Grand Opening and Closing in 2001 and the follow up, Of Natural History, in 2004. In 2006 Sleepytime signed to The End Records who rereleased Grand Opening and Closing with three bonus tracks.

Their third studio album, In Glorious Times was released in 2007.

Live performances have featured puppet shows, pseudo-scientifi c scholarly presentations, and many homemade devices used as instruments. Dan Rathbun creates most of the band’s idiosyncratic instruments and plays, among other things, a custom-stringed bass instrument referred to as the Sledgehammer Dulcimer, which uses piano strings

and is possibly more than 7 feet long.SGM’s music can be likened to experimental

rock or avant-garde metal; however, as inherent to the music, the band attempts to escape any categorization. Some infl uences include Mr. Bungle, Trey Spruance, Mike Patton, King Crimson, Thinking Plague and Secret Chiefs 3, resulting in “some truly cracked prog-metal anthems.”

Faun Fables is Dawn McCarthy’s vivid imagination come to life in song and theater, made to explore human pathos amid an animate earth with musical and physical storytelling forms. It has been attracting a devoted and eclectic following since 1997 with numerous performances and fi ve record releases distributed worldwide by City Records: Early Song, Mother Twilight, Family Album, The Transit Rider and A Table Forgotten.

Dawn McCarthy is a writer, singer and theater artist whose work is a sea of gorgeous elemental nitty gritty; haunting melodies, breath, stomping, and natural theatricality led by the voice, rooted in the physical body. It is a crossroads where ancient ballad, art song, physical theater and rock music meet. Her lyrics speak to people of all ages about things like rugged housekeeping, street kids, growing old, sleepwalking and exiled travelers returning home.

Dawn was raised in Spokane, WA and studied at the School Of Visual Arts and New School for Social Research in New York City. A solo and musical exploration through Europe, plus a fateful meeting with Oakland based entertainer Nils Frykdahl, began a creative chapter in 1997 that eventually relocated her to the thriving arts community of the Bay Area, California, where she is still based.

Tickets are $13 in advance, $15 at the door. Doors open at 8:00 pm and showtime is 9:00 ★

By Lauren BratslavskyOn Sunday, November 15, U.

of O. Campus Radio 88.1 FM KWVA welcomes Built To Spill back to the WOW Hall.

Every autumn (at least, in the past couple of years), Built to Spill sweeps into town for a marvelous show. Last year they treated concert-goers to a performance of an old album, Perfect From Now On. This year, Built to Spill is on tour in support of their new album, There is No Enemy. The band’s fi rst album since 2006’s You In Reverse is a testament to three years of work. And the added bonus to the night’s show? A DJ set by the band’s lead singer and founder, Doug Martsch. Ever wondered what musical tastes inspire and infl uence such a musical mastermind? Now is the time to fi nd out.

Built to Spill comes from the neighboring state of Idaho and certainly fi ts the mold of a Northwestern band: bearded musicians clad in modest clothing, with thoughtful music and an indie rock aesthetic. Or rather, they set that standard. Doug Martsch, who writes the music, sings and plays the guitar, has been around for twenty years. The current lineup is a collection of experienced musicians: Brett Nelson on bass, Scott Plouf on drums, and two more guitarists, Jim Roth and B r e t t

Netson. The sound of Built To Spill

is eclectic and polished. Their style is lyrical, contemplative and melodic. Each song is fi lled with strong, layered guitar lines and glorious extended musical segments. Look forward to a mix of new songs and old favorites. While all their songs have an innovative sound, each album features evolutions in their musical stylings and different mixtures of skilled musicians.

Come see Built to Spill as they near the end of a long national tour. The night’s show includes Disco Doom, Finn Riggins and the much anticipated

Doug Martsch DJ set. Tickets are

$22 in advance, $25 at the door. Doors open at 7:00 pm and showtime is 8:00. ★
