On Monday, December 14, the CCPA and U. of O. Campus Radio 88.1 FM KWVA proudly welcome the How The Grouch Stole Christmas Tour with Mistah F.A.B., Fashawn n’ Exile, The Prime and DJ Fresh. Christmas is a time of tradition. Last December, The Grouch visited the WOW Hall and stole Christmas. Only nobody seemed to mind. In fact, The Grouch felt encouraged enough that he decided to make it a new tradition. So this winter, The Grouch returns with his highly anticipated 2nd annual How the Grouch Stole Christmas Tour. After the overwhelming success of last year’s outing, The Grouch raises the bar by going outside his usual cast of characters and enlisting a handful of the West Coast’s most promising talents. This year, the buzz worthy and undeniably dope duo of Fashawn & Exile will kick in the door with the opening duties. Fans will then be treated to a verbal assault delivered by none other than the Bay Area’s own charismatic ambassador, Mistah F.A.B. The Grouch, assisted by DJ Fresh, will close the evening, making sure that every heart, mind and ear in the building has been stolen! On select dates, fellow Living Legend member Luckyiam will join him with his new group comprised of himself and Sapient (Sandpeople), who are known as The Prime. Stacked with goodies and en route to the next city, the tour vehicle may “lose” a few gifts, only to be found by following The Grouch on Twitter (@therealgrouch). The Grouch and company are looking to give back during a tough holiday season and would appreciate your help! All along the tour, The Grouch will be collecting donations for Toys for Tots. Bring a toy to the show and it will go to a needy child in our community. Also this December, The Grouch will be releasing a new project entitled Three Eyes Off The Time. The Grouch emerged from the Bay Area’s intelligent hip-hop scene as a member of the Living Legends crew. As MC extraordinaire he’s built a reputation for being at the forefront of independent music. In addition to the Legends and his nine previous solo albums, The Grouch has released collaborations with Zion I, Luckyiam and Eligh, most recently Say G&E. The Grouch and Eligh performed at the WOW Hall in May as part of the Say G&E Tour. Stanley P. Cox, better known by his stage name Mistah F.A.B., is an American rapper from North Oakland, California. Mistah F.A.B. is an acronym for “Money Is Something to Always Have - FaEva Afta Bread.” After dropping his debut album, Nig-Latin, in 2003, Mistah F.A.B. signed to Mac Dre’s Thizz Entertainment and blossomed as a front runner in the Bay Area’s Hyphy movement. F.A.B.’s first single release was the 2006 hit “Ghost Ride It”, while songs like “Super Sic Wit It”, “N.E.W. Oakland” and “Kicked Out The Club”, made F.A.B.’s Son of a Pimp album an instant success around the Bay Area. This year Mistah F.A.B. released his fourth full length studio album, Da Yellow Bus Rydah, and a mixtape, The Grind Is A Terrible Thing To Waste (hosted By DJ Scream). Fashawn made his WOW Hall debut in October with Ghostface Killah. Tickets are $15 in advance, $18 at the door. Doors open at 8:00 pm and showtime is 9:00. On Thursday, December 31, the CCPA and U. of O. Campus Radio 88.1 FM KWVA proudly host New Year’s Eve with Medium Troy playing with Reeble Jar members Sean Ponder and James Green along with special guests Twinkle Thizz and The Big Dippers, The T-Club and The Mossy Top String Band. Much infamy and legend surrounds the band Medium Troy, like the time they beat up then Mayor Jim Torrey, the time they exposed themselves to Katy Perry on the Warped Tour, or the time they told an arena full of Lil’ Wayne fans to “go f* themselves” (editor’s note: this story was submitted past deadline and has not been vetted). Medium Troy has quickly risen from a bedroom production collective into one of the areas largest bands. They have won numerous awards including “Best Band” in the 2009 Eugene Weekly Awards and “Favorite Local Act” in the 2008 WOW Hall Poll. One DJ infamously pegged them as: “Too raging to be a reggae band, too stony to be a rock band.” Troy is best known for shamelessly mixing genres. Their live shows and recordings can range from folk rock to dubbed- out glitch-hop. The band refers to their super eclectic mix of sound as Bohemian Dub Music. Medium Troy’s reputation for breaking venue attendance and bar sales records has kept them in high demand (although the band turns down most show offers). Their shows have become a social phenomenon for people who like to party. Their dedicated following (known as the “Squirrel Crew”) is known for getting extremely hyphy at shows. Medium Troy’s first album aptly named Bohemian Dub has been an underground success, it is constantly sold out and does well internationally through Itunes. A haggard West Coast tour to support the album got the band discovered by the Warped Tour founder and the band got a big break by being booked on the Warped Tour in the summer of 2008. After discussions with several labels, Medium Troy created their own record label -- Hesh is Fresh Records Llc. -- with a small group of investors based out of Los Angeles. The arrangement allowed the band to keep full creative control, local sponsors and low ticket prices (the band is famous for fighting with promoters to keep ticket prices low). Medium Troy has been producing their second album for almost two years. The release date has been moved back numerous times (like BTS’s Doug Martsch, their producer Yonaton is known for being a half-baked perfectionist who spends months recording a song only to throw it away and start over again). They plan to support the album with heavy national touring throughout 2010. Twinkle Thizz and The Big Dippers is a post-psychedelic electro dance group that originated from a laboratory experiment gone dreadfully wrong. The mysterious band members always wear masks to hide their mangled and deformed faces. They have no web page or written biography, nobody knows where they come from. Legend has it that their true identities have been withheld by the most secret sectors of the government. They have been cursed to sit alone in dark rooms in the glow of their computer screens never to see the light of day. The only thing known is that they make ridiculously crunchy beats which were described by Spin’s website as, “Ratatat meets Parliament with a dash of Mac Dre.” Rolling Stone Online described their music as, “Some of the craziest most original tracks to hit the circuit in years. Their elusiveness and refusal to make a website or release tracks makes their infrequent live shows so incredibly high energy and sought after.” The band is also frequently compared to MSTRKRFT, the Knife and Kraftwerk. Twinkle Thizz and The Big Dippers is a show you will be talking about for years. Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door. Doors open at 8:00 pm and showtime is 9:00.

The Grouch, assisted by DJ Fresh, will close

the evening, making sure that every heart, mind and ear in the building has been stolen!

Mistah F.A.B. is an acronym for “Money Is Something to Always Have - FaEva Afta Bread.”

After dropping his debut album, Nig-Latin, in 2003, Mistah F.A.B. signed to Mac Dre’s Thizz Entertainment and blossomed as a front runner in the Bay Area’s Hyphy movement. F.A.B.’s fi rst single release was the 2006 hit “Ghost Ride It”, while songs like “Super Sic Wit It”, “N.E.W.

One DJ infamously pegged them as: “Too raging to be a reggae band, too stony to be a rock band.” Troy is best known for

shamelessly mixing genres. Their live shows and recordings can range from folk rock to dubbed-out glitch-hop. The band refers to their super eclectic mix of sound as Bohemian Dub Music.

Medium Troy’s reputation for breaking venue attendance and bar sales records has kept them in high demand (although the band turns down most show offers). How The GrouchStole Christmas 2

On Sunday, December 6, the CCPA and KLCC proudly welcome Son Volt along with special guest Sera Cahoone.

After spearheading the alt country movement with Uncle Tupelo, Jay Farrar pursued his vision with Son Volt, who recorded three landmark albums in the ‘90s before the groundbreaking artist put the band on extended hiatus and cut three solo LPs. Missing the free exchange of ideas and the surprises that inevitably occur when a group of simpatico musicians lock together, Farrar assembled a new lineup of Son Volt in 2004.

“Making solo recordings can be fulfi lling, but you quickly become aware of self- capabilities and limitations,” says Farrar. “The band dynamic is such that everyone is bringing a diverse amount of experience into play and pushing everyone else -- usually into the unknown, but that’s a good place to make music.”

American Central Dust, Son Volt’s third album in four years (Rounder, July 7), following ‘05’s Okemah and the Melody of Riot and ‘07’s The Search, marks

the apotheosis of both the Son Volt dynamic and the rigorous aesthetic that distinguishes Farrar’s entire body of work, in which classic and contemporary elements are fashioned into arresting new shapes.

In the classic sense, the new album exhilaratingly carries on the tradition of the Byrds, the Flying Burrito Brothers, Little Feat circa Sailin’ Shoes, the Rolling Stones of Exile on Main Street and early R.E.M.

“The approach was to get back to more fundamental themes, both lyrically and musically, to make a more focused record,” Farrar explains. “This time around, I was going for a kind of simplicity, even in the structure of the songs. I probably learned that from listening to Tom Waits, where simplicity can be a virtue.”

As for the contemporary side, American Central Dust was written during the summer of 2008, and these 12 songs vividly capture the unease of a people in crisis, as the familiar was becoming surreal and long-held assumptions were in the process of unraveling. An epic lament for the heartland, American Central Dust is populated with readily

recognizable characters, the most hopeful of them searching for love against a backdrop of rusted road signs and abandoned factories. In this world of “grays and blues,” as Farrar puts it, the intimacies of human relationships are knotted up in predicaments that arise out of struggling to get by while desperately grasping at whatever remnants of the American Dream are still within reach.

Surrounding Farrar are drummer Dave Bryson (a regular since Farrar’s third solo LP, 2003’s live Stone, Steel & Bright Lights) and bassist Andrew Duplantis (who joined the group for Okemah and the Melody of Riot), and a pair of new additions in guitarist Chris Masterson, whom Farrar spotted a few years back playing with Jack Ingram, and Mark Spencer, formerly of the Blood Oranges, who switches off between keyboards, pedal steel and lap steel.

Sera Cahoone has often plotted an unorthodox route on the way to Only As the Day Is Long, her quiet, country-noirish second album and Sub Pop debut. That path has included a notable tenure as drummer for rock outfi t and Sub Pop label mates, Band of Horses (she plays on their acclaimed 2006 album, Everything All The Time), as well as a stint in the late indie band Carissa’s Weird.

But in 2006, Cahoone decided to step out from the cymbals and snare and focus on singing, songwriting, and guitar playing, skills she’d been honing for nearly 15 years on her own.

The fruit of her newfound dedication was Sera Cahoone (2006), her self-released fi rst album of thoughtful country songs that was lauded by indie-rock tastemaker KEXP-FM in Seattle along with NPR.

Tickets are $15 in advance or at the door. Doors open at 7:00 pm and showtime is 8:00. ★

On Thursday, December 10, Monqui Presents welcomes Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros along with special guests Fool’s Gold and Local Natives.

Formed in 2007 by Ima Robot frontman Alex Ebert after a brief period of existential crisis, cultish 11-piece indie rock outfi t Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros draw their inspiration from the communal musical communities that peppered Southern California (specifi cally Laurel Canyon) with their positive vibrations during the ‘60s and early ‘70s. Employing a unique sound that brings to mind a not so subtle mix of Parliament, Polyphonic Spree, Bob Marley, and the Incredible String Band, the group released its debut EP, Here Comes, in May 2009 followed by the full-length Up from Below in July.

Reports Rolling Stone:“Ask anyone who’s held

hands with a stranger or danced

barefoot in the front row at an Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros gig: The 10-piece folk-rock ensemble’s shows are more like shamanistic tent revivals than rock concerts. Former Ima Robot frontman Alex Ebert, the singer-songwriter mastermind behind the group, embraced his hippie heart after losing his major-label deal, moving and getting back to basics... On their recently released debut LP, Up From Below, Ebert channels

his psychedelic tendencies into tunes that are alternately joyful (“Janglin,” “Home”), jaunty (“40 Day Dream”) and gothic (“Desert Song”), with echoes of the Arcade Fire and the Mamas and the Papas. Ebert attributes their sound to a conscious effort on his part to connect with his most childlike musical impulses.”

Tickets are $10 in advance, $12 at the door. Doors open at 7:00 pm and showtime is 8:00. ★

Edward Sharpe & the Magnetic Zeros

by Rachel KipnisOn Tuesday, December 8,

the Community Members for the Performing Arts and KRVM welcome Joe Purdy along with special guest Meaghan Smith.

Born in Arkansas, singer/songwriter Joe Purdy has recorded an impressive ten albums in eight years. Each album represents a different experience traveling. His new album is an ode to his recording time located in a 17th century mill converted into a live arts theater in Strathaven, just outside of Glasgow, Scotland. The title of this album is called The Last Clock on the Wall, which was released on his independent label, Mud Town Crier Records. With the help of national TV advertisements and a grassroots fan base, Purdy was able to sell over 850,000 direct track downloads from iTunes within the United States without ever signing to a label.

Joe Purdy is extremely infl uenced by his surroundings and therefore has written all ten of his albums about his travels. Take My Blanket and Go (2007) was recorded in NYC following a UK tour in 2006; You Can Tell Georgia (2006) was recorded outside of London immediately following a European tour with Tom McRae, while Paris in the Morning (2006) was recorded during a short visit to Paris a few

months later. Canyon Joe (2007) was recorded at his home in California, after being stranded in New Mexico during a blizzard over New Year’s Eve.

His song “I Love Rain the Most” was featured in an episode of Grey’s Anatomy, which led to “The City” (Only Four Seasons) being included in the show as well as on the Grey’s Anatomy Season I soundtrack which sold over 150,000 units. Additionally, Purdy landed fi ve more songs in Grey’s episodes including “San Jose” (Take My Blanket and Go), “Suitcase” (Only Four Seasons), “Can’t Get It Right Today” (You Can Tell Georgia), and “Rainy Day Lament” (Stomping Grounds), which was featured on an episode of the Fox hit House. Also his song “Can’t Get it Right Today” was used in a car commercial in 2009.

Meaghan Smith grew up in London, England and then moved to Ontario, Canada. In her spare time as a child she often drew and sang with her family. In high school she recorded her fi rst audio CD and began her “love

affair” with the microphone. After high school she attended college in Novia Scotia to major in animation design and wanted to start a career in the arts’ world, but decided to follow her heart as a singer instead.

“I wanted the album to be an inspiring musical experience that makes you feel like you’re leaving one world and entering another — a colorful, whimsical and imaginative place where you can refl ect on your past and look forward to your future. I am greatly moved by the music of the ’20s, ’30s, and ’40s — times when things were pure and simple — so I wanted the music to recall those eras, but I wanted to put a my own spin it,” Smith explains.

Meghan’s album could be said to be a rendition of something old and something new. Songs like “I Know” and “Drifted Apart” are about her old family and friends with a background of Mellotron; she is not someone to be missed!

Tickets are $15 in advance, $15 at the door. Doors open at 7:30 pm and showtime is 8:00. ★

by John SpringOn Friday, December 4, 3

Inches of Blood is breaching the North American border to perform at WOW Hall for the second time this year. Opening for them will be California metal bands Saviours and Holy Grail. Local Salem death metal band Dusks Embrace has been added to the bill as well.

3 Inches of Blood (3IOB) hail from Vancouver, British Columbia, and describe themselves as a heavy metal band with traditional infl uences. Most of their inspiration comes from the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) of the late 70’s and early 80’s, an era in the UK which gave birth to the likes of Judas Priest, Iron Maiden and

King Diamond. This inspiration is evident through the high pitched vocals of lead singer Cam Pipes, and the technical skills of supporting band members Justin Hagberg (guitar/vocals), Shane Clark (guitar) and Ash Pearson (drums).

3IOB just released a new album on September 8th titled Here Waits Thy Doom. On their new album the band truly embraces the NWOBHM sound with twelve songs that come at you with breakneck speed, fast as lightning guitar work, and top notch vocals.

Saviours are from Oakland California, an unlikely place for a metal band to originate. They gain their musical infl uences from all types of metal, including

NWOBHM. The band includes Austin Barber (vocals and lead/rhythm guitar), Sonny Christopher Reinhardt (lead/rhythm guitar), Cyrus Comisky (bass) and Scott Batiste (drums). Saviours’ most recent album Into Abbadon, released in 2008, has been called, “epic, enormous, and just plain heavy,” by critics. The band succeeds in transferring the explosiveness of their live shows onto CD with this new album.

Holy Grail is on a mission to restore everything that was good about early heavy metal music and kick the ass of the poison that popular metal music has become. This Pasadena, California metal band is leading the charge to bring back the sound of bands like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. Singer James Paul Luna’s vocals have been compared to the likes of Ronnie James Dio, Rob Halford and Sebastian Bach.

Dusks Embrace is a melodic death metal band from Salem, Oregon. The band is made up of Josh Brewer (vocals, guitar), Joey Westerlund (guitar), Josh Mendoza (bass) and Brandon Callicott (drums). The band released its debut album, Paradigm Shift, in February of this year.

Tickets are $12 in advance, $15 at the door. Doors open at 7:30 pm and showtime is 8:00. ★

FIND US ONLINE: WWW.FACEBOOK.COM KEYWORD: WOWHALL WOW HALL NOTES DECEMBER 2009 5

by Bob Fennessy with Jesse Conway

On Saturday, December 12, the Community Center for the Performing Arts hosts the WOW Hall Membership Party -- celebrating thirty-four years as caretaker of the historic Woodmen of the World Hall with musical guests David Rogers, Halie Loren with Matt Treder, Accordion-Okie! hosted by Queen Accordionna with music by the Accordion-Okie! All Stars!, and MisGuided Children. The event features an amazing array of food and beverages donated by Eugene’s fi nest producers and restaurants.

Combine virtuoso classical guitar technique with a wide knowledge of world music, and the result is the amazingly versatile guitar music repertoire of David Rogers. Here are settings of Irish and Scottish music, Balkan Gypsy dances, and classical guitar masterworks from all over Europe and the Americas, punctuated with amazingly lively rhythm, with sensitive and expressive quality of tone.

Though his primary music focus is as a soloist, Dave has performed with such diverse music groups as the Eugene Opera Chorus, a Balkan music dance band, and a blues-rock band. He graduated from Southern Oregon University with a Bachelor’s degree in classical guitar performance in 1991; and graduated from the University of Oregon in 1996 with a Masters degree in classical music history and ethnomusicology, and wrote his masters thesis on Turlough O’Carolan, the 18th Century blind Irish harper.

Since her stage debut at the age of ten at the Sitka Fine Arts Camp in Alaska, Halie Loren has continued to wow and woo audiences with her warm, intimate live performances; she is an elegant, electrifying performer, full of charisma and cool. Her voice is gorgeous, graceful and somehow earthy and ethereal at once.

In describing the vocal talents of Eugene-based singer/songwriter Halie Loren, the adjectives just start piling up. Heartfelt is one. Confi dent yet vulnerable, strong but inviting. Authentic is another adjective that crops up again and again -- emotionally authentic, which is the key to great jazz and great art in general.

When Halie Loren sings, you not only hear the music -- you feel it. And at the WOW Hall Membership Party she’s right there, in the room with you, fi lling the space with intimate stories of love and heartbreak, memory and hope, experience and passion — in a word, life.

Halie cut her songwriting teeth as a teenager, when she

spent an educational year rubbing elbows with some of Nashville’s top composers. Loren’s debut release, Full Circle (2006), was hailed for exhibiting, “a power and grace that are nearly unheard of in popular music.” And along with last year’s acclaimed They Oughta Write a Song, Loren (accompanied by frequent collaborator, pianist Matt Treder) has also released Many Times, Many Ways, a delightful collection of holiday songs that would melt the heart of the most tone-deaf Scrooge.

Still, for all she has already accomplished, one gets the feeling that Loren is getting ready to explode! It’s only a matter of time.

ACCORDION-OKE! The Newest Rage (Still) Sweeping the Northwest!

In 2000, the millennium turned and Accordionna transmutated into The First SLUG Queen of the New Millennium. Within a year of Her Ascension to the Slime Throne, ACCORDION-OKE! was born!

It happened near the University of Oregon when QA turned a spontaneous street corner gathering into the very fi rst Accordion-Oke! ever by encouraging the braver minions to sing while she backed them up

on her trusty squeezebox.Accordion-Oke! is a simple

solution to a basic human need that is all too often ignored in our part of the planet. Humans need to SING !

The WOW Hall organizers recognize this essential human need and are pleased to announce that Queen Accordionna has agreed to host Accordion-Oke! once again at the annual membership party. Everyone is encouraged to sing in any way they feel most comfortable: alone, in a group or from the comfort of the audience.

Accordion-Oke! singers will be backed up by The Accordion-Oke! All Stars! consisting of: Ken Sokoloff (drums), well known for his work with KEF, the Surfonics, Paul Prince, Thomas Matfumo and too many acts to name in this small space. Bud Chase (bass & tuba) is part of the horn-centric Scrambled Ape as well as the accordion-centric Accordions Anonymous and has been part of the Flying Karamazov Brothers’ musical entourage for years. David Landazuri (charrango, trombone and Party Motivation) is one of the mainstays of Eugene’s favorite 12-Step group, Accordions Anonymous. 2006 SLUG Queen Slugretha Latifah Uleafa Gastropedia Jackson

will be on hand to inspire and motivate as well and if we’re really lucky she may even WOW us with a song of her choosing. Ken, Bud and David, who have recently accompanied Queen Accordionna on such wild and crazy musical adventures as the Kinetic Sculpture Race and Drunk Puppet Night, will be joined by Skip Moses (saxophone) who longtime Eugenians may recall from his work with The Cyclones and The Horns of Doom.

MisGuided Children is Sam Harmon on guitar and vocals, Hansa El Din on bass and Nic Gusset on drums. The band’s sound is a blend of Sam’s beloved nineties pop rock with just the slightest touch of R&R/Punk rhythm section and “folksy” blues to keep grandma on her toes. Also, despite these things, it’s kind of odd. MisGuided Children have been known to please people of all ages regardless of the guidance they received during their formative years.

Sam Harmon is a local musician, songwriter, artist and fi lmmaker. Sam was home schooled so it is only natural that he has taught himself to play music.

Hansa El DIn is a maybe-talented multi-instrumentalist who travels and plays music

primarily between Port Townsend, Washington, Eugene and the Bay Area of California. He has performed with a number of bands and local musical celebrities including The Inkwell Rhythm Makers and Baby Gramps. Hansa has also released an acclaimed album with his friends Billy and Willis entitled Green Green Green. His most steady love-gig has been a team act with Country singer Brody Douglas Hunt.

Nic Gusset is a full time musician and local music expert. When Nic isn’t playing in a band he’s jumping from one concert to the next trying to see as much music as the human mind can experience. Nic currently plays guitar in On The Tundra, owns his own record label, Trough Raid, and teaches music at The Village School in Eugene.

The Community Center for the Performing Arts was incorporated thirty-four years ago to save the Woodmen of the World Hall and keep it available to the community. On December 10, 1975, the WOWATHON began with live entertainment 24 hours a day for fi ve days in order to raise the down-payment. Today, the Hall remains community-owned and democratically operated. The CCPA completed payment on the mortgage in 1983, and in 1996 the building was offi cially designated a historic landmark. The organization enjoys a broad base of community support, as demonstrated by the membership list published in this issue. Hundreds of others have completed training as WOW Hall volunteers, a large number of them area teenagers.

Each year the Membership Party serves to thank the supporters of the CCPA, a nonprofi t (501c3) arts organization. A short program includes an introduction to the CCPA board of directors and staff and recognition of all those who donated to support the event. Last year over 80 area restaurants and other businesses contributed prepared food, beverages and other items for a buffet-style dinner and a similar number are expected to this year.

Admission to the Membership Party is free for members (members note: If your mailing label reads “This is your party ticket” your membership is current; you don’t need the label to get in but it makes it faster). Memberships are available at the door for $15 or more (members are encouraged to bring guests at a cost of $10 for adults, $5 for ages 6-11; fi ve and under free). Doors open at 7:00 pm with David Rogers, Halie Loren at 8:00, a short program at 9:00, Accordion-Okie! at 9:20 and MisGuided Children 10:30ish. ★

6 DECEMBER 2009 WOW HALL NOTES FIND US ONLINE: WWW.SONICBIDS.COM/WOWHALL

by Mindy LinderOn Saturday, December 5,

fi ve bands --- Aeolus, Elenora, Abandon the Shore, A Year in Review and Forever Ends Today -- join forces to benefi t the Willamette High School Forensics Team.

Aeolus is comprised of fi ve Oregon natives. Sprouting from very different pasts and lifestyles, they have chosen to ignore what is expected and pave their own road. Aeolus takes the tools provided to make a wave of hysteria and beauty that exists in the hearts of all. They are merely artists with soundtrack for a canvas, painting with the most vulnerable parts of their life.

Started in the winter of 2008, Elenora brought together ex members of Devour The Living, The Sun Also Rises, Marietta, and an extremely talented drummer to make a heavy but melodic hardcore band. Elenora has been working to expand their fan base by playing shows all over Oregon. This summer the band fi nished recording their debut EP with producer Kris Crummett (Drop Dead Gorgeous, Dance Gavin Dance, Emarosa, American Me, Lower Defi nition) at Interlace Studios in Portland.

From the beginning, Abandon The Shore has wanted nothing more than to tour the country playing music for anyone willing to listen. With a brand

new EP, Always Alive Always Breathing, under their belt the boys are ready to hit the road. Abandon the Shore has gained a signifi cant amount of notoriety in the Oregon scene -- not so much as a hardcore/metal band but as a hardcore fusion band mixing in elements of reggae and jazz that you can’t help but get up and dance to.

On November 16 Abandon the Shore performed at the WOW Hall in support of Escape the Fate. They have also shared the stage with Emmure, Showbread, 1997 and No Bragging Rights.

Playing out of Eugene, A Year In Review delivers a fresh new approach to hardcore/screamo music. With their heavy breakdowns, melodic progressions and slap-you-across-the-face vocals, AYIR brings their A-game 100% and is always leaving the crowd wanting more. The band was formed with members from the bands Take Your Last Breath and Your Favorite Disaster, carrying on playing songs from both. With infl uences that range from bands like A Day to Remember and The Devil Wears Prada, to Emmure and Boys Night Out, AYIR tries to grasp the musical genius of such bands into their own songs.

Forever Ends Today pushes all the boundaries and brings a genuine sound to a desperate, fl ickering music scene. With melodic harmonies, heavy vocals, poppy electronics and a huge

dash of originality, it’s a perfect recipe for a band that’s ready to take over. Young but passionate about what they do, Forever Ends Today is taking big steps to change the world around them and its imperfection with their lyrics, coming out on stage every show with remarkable energy and fl are. Releasing their debut EP Parallels this summer and having a great response, Forever Ends Today is looking forward to taking this world by storm.

Forever Ends Today opened for Escape the Fate on Nov. 16.

The Willamette High School Forensics Team (that’s Speech & Debate, not CSI) competes at local, state, national and international levels. Coaches Rob Bingham and Mindy Linder work with students to develop skills in critical thinking, writing and public speaking. Students compete in a myriad of speech events including extemporaneous, expository and oratory, as well as poetry, prose and dramatic/humorous interpretation. Students also compete in a number of debate events including Lincoln Douglas, Public and Public Forum.

A Willamette student was selected as one of eleven students in 2007 to represent Oregon and the United States in Uganda for a culture exchange program, Critical Thinking Across Cultures. As a result, coach Rob Bingham founded 10 Degrees in Uganda, a program that raises funds to send each of the ten Ugandan students from the exchange to school.

With recent educational budget cuts, the team faces fi nancial challenges and needs to raise money in order to continue to give students the opportunity for regular exposure and competition. The WHS team is thankful for the WOW’s willingness to host a youth music concert that will feature one of their own student’s bands among fi ve, in an effort to raise money for the teams activities.

Admission is on a sliding scale of $5 or more at the door. Doors open at 6:30 pm and showtime is 7:00. ★

by David RobertsonDecember 21 is the beginning of winter. This is the night of the

longest darkness. So we gather as a community each year at this time to remember those who are most often forgotten.

The annual Homeless Memorial is a time to remember, refl ect and respond to the fact that too may homeless folks die on our streets. We will read each name and honor the memory of our homeless friends. This is done on this night in cities across the nation in solidarity with the National Coalition for the Homeless and sponsored locally by Free People (www.FreePeopleEugene.com), a grassroots organization bringing help and hope to homeless folks.

The Memorial will be held from 6:00 to 7:00 pm on Monday, December 21. Everyone is invited!

Free People Eugene hosts regular events at the WOW Hall throughout the cold, wet months. These events always feature free food and clothing, music, and fellowship. Donations are needed and can be made by contacting David Robertson at 461-1278. ★

I live here in Eugene. I’m curious, observant and a

compulsive doodler. My work is saturated with ink, paint, and marker with a digital slant. Growing up in an era of video games and CGI graphics the juxtaposition of reality and imagination enthralls me; I try to create things that fi t neatly into neither but live in surreality.

On Friday, December 11, the CCPA and KRVM’s Zion Train proudly welcome Conscious Productions’ 10 Year Anniversary Concert with Queen Omega and special guest David Kirton.

Queen Omega is touring in support of Joyful Noise, her new album released on iTunes October 13 and in stores on October 20.

Queen Omega hails from San Fernando in Trinidad. Encouraged by her mother, she began entering local talent shows from the age of nine, writing her own calypsos and even rapping on national television. Later on she sang backing vocals for local producer Kenny Philips, accompanying numerous top Soca acts both in the studio and on stage. Raised in a musical family, she grew up listening to soul artists like Aretha Franklin, Anita Baker and Whitney Houston, as well as jazz and the traditional music of Trinidad. Such foundations were to serve her well later on; her favorites however, were reggae and dancehall.

Inspired by the teachings of Emperor Haile Selassie I, her song writing skills soon blossomed, with roots and reality themes

coming to the fore as her love of Rastafari deepened. It was on a trip to Jamaica with the Solomon Band where she performed at the Caribbean Music Expo in late 2000 that she met producer Mickey D, who brought her to London the following year for sessions that resulted in her debut set, Queen Omega. This was followed by several hit singles and a second album titled Pure Love.

Early 2004, Jet Star released Away From Babylon, Queen Omega’s third album within Mickey D’s Green House Family. Her distinctive voice, conscious lyrics and some of the times’ best riddims makes Queen Omega one to watch, listen to and love. She has performed on many of the largest Reggae festivals, such as Reggae Rising (USA) SNWMF (USA), JaSound (France), African Music Festival (Germany).

Barbadian singer-songwriter David Kirton captured America’s attention with his 2007 performance at South By Southwest and a remix of the video of the title track from his album Time For Change featuring our new president. Kirton

recently won four Barbados Music Awards, including Song, Video (“Green Camoufl age”) and Reggae Artist Of The Year.

David Kirton (www.davidkirton.com) is part of a musical movement coming from the Southern Caribbean that’s outside the typical reggae box. Forging his own individuality with personal yet universal songs and fresh, organic sounds, the popular Barbadian singer/songwriter is expanding beyond his base and capturing the U.S. and UK with his soul infl uenced modern roots reggae rock.

Though he toured the States and appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno back in 1999 as part of the Spirit of Unity Tour (which saw him opening for reggae giants Maxi Priest, Third World, Culture and Steel Pulse), Kirton is making his big splash as a solo artist in the States now. The provocative, socially conscious remix of Kirton’s fi rst video, the title track from his latest album Time For Change featuring clips of Obama from the campaign trail, has earned Kirton attention on myspace and YouTube. This can be viewed at (http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&VideoID=31577093)

The Sunday Mercury’s (U.K.) Paul Cole wrote: “Already a triple award-winner in the Caribbean, Time for Change has the crossover appeal to break him big in the mainstream pop charts.” The Canadian National Campus Review backed that up with: “Kirton has busted out of the box with this, his third album, by blending elements of reggae, soul, rock and pop into a contemporary yet natural sound, which he then delivers with his exotically smooth, soul dipped voice.”

Tickets are $15 in advance, $20 at the door. Doors open at 9:00 pm and showtime is 9:30. ★

On Friday, December 18, Little Metal Devil Productions welcomes Soulscythe, Monday With A Bullet, New World Sinner, Violence Unfolds and Landon.

Hailing from Eugene, Soulscythe are a crushing mix of brutality, technicality and melodicism. Soulscythe draws infl uences from many different forms of metal as well as classical music. The group started in 2003 in prison after the breakup of the deathmetal band Of Purest Fire. After playing a few shows and struggling for the next few

years members moved on to other projects. Soon afterward new members were found who also play in the blackmetal band Tormentium.

They state: “We intend to take the listener on a darkened voyage of apocalypse and mental torture.”

Monday With a Bullet has been around for about three years and includes ex members of Blasphemous Abnormality, The Defecators, Even in Death, Myndissent, The Dirty Rigs and Guest Check. MWB plays fast paced aggressive heavy metal.

Members include Lacy Hepner on lead vocals, Derick Cramer on lead guitar, Chris Combs on bass, Shane Hepner on drums, and Andy Larson on rhythm guitar and vocals.

New World Sinner is a brutal straight up metal band based mostly out of the Eugene area. Members are: Boots on vocals, Matt Anderson on bass, Shane Hepner on guitar, Brian Brown on lead guitar and Stephen Morse on drums.

Violence Unfolds has but a few simple goals to achieve in their career: make your ears bleed uncontrollably, make you destroy something beautiful, inspire you to rock out like never before, and of course World Domination!

Ladon is a fi ve piece epic thrash metal band hailing from the depths of Eugene Oregon. Their show is packed with grindy riffs that are sprinkled with blistering solos, growling vocals, and fi ve guys who are in your face pounding out metal.

Tickets are $6 in advance, $9 at the door. Doors open at 6:30 pm and showtime is 7:00. ★
