    World Percussion Taiko User Guide

As we hit the final stretch for 2012, we can reflect on what has been an amazing year of transformation, dedication and commitment from each of you. It is challenging to cover all of our achievements and milestones throughout the year, however, some of our key moments are shared in this newsletter.

We started the year launching the Connect Program, building on the ideals and strength of our previous company program One. Founded around four main transformations, Connect is designed to make One stronger while also bringing One further, which underpinned our strategy in 2012.

SolutionsOur Strategic Projects teams have been very focussed in securing and delivering some significant and complex projects in what has been a challenging environment. We launched SmartStruxure to resounding praise from our customers and I firmly believe we are equipped with a game changer in the intelligent buildings systems arena.

    Watermarking

Automatic digital watermarking is applied to all our Kontakt libraries using Continuatas proprietary software. We embedded undetectable information in all NKI, NKR and NKM files. Each customer is automatically assigned a unique watermark on purchase then seamlessly delivered along with the rest of the download. The watermarks are completely robust, undetectable to binary file comparison techniques and remain in-tact even after re-saving, batch re-saving or editing instruments.

    Congratulations!

You are now the proud owner of Evolution Series World Percussion Taiko. As this is a download product only there is no box or printed material. So please make sure that you backup your files in a safe place. Inside the primary folder you will find the following items:

Understanding how the instruments are set up

    World Inspire Sets

One of the great things about this library are the World Inspire Sets. They can be found in the Taikos Multi folder.

With a hit of a key you can have an epic drum ensemble play. If you like, you can create your own grooves as well.

A World Inspire Set consists of multiple Instruments. Each Instrument contains a different drum. The concept behind a World Inspire Set is to provide a variety of inspiring drum combinations and grooves.

    Unique Grooves

Like the World Inspire Sets, All patches/individual drums have unique grooves assigned to keys. This gives the user a wonderful starting point when it comes to creating rhythms. If you wish to alter a groove, you can drag the groove via the taiko interface directly to your daw.

    Advanced Page

The advanced page gives the user access to some important features, such as round-robin reduction and reset, Velocity Stepper and Velocity Curve adjustment.

    1. Velocity StepperThis is effectively a velocity arpeggiator. To activate it you must press the button to the left (you can also assign this button to midi CC). When active you can use the mouse to draw a velocity pattern. Once done just play the individual hits on your keyboard to hear the results. The Velocity Stepper automatically adapts to your DAWs time signature.

    2. Velocity CurveWith the use of the curve knob the user can easily adjust the key sensitivity to suite their playing style.

    3. Link Velocity to CC1Press this button if you wish to control the midi grooves velocity by key sensitivity or the modwheel.

    4. Bypass Articulation MappingWith this feature active you can move the hit type key position with out affecting the groove playback.

    5. Groove LatchAllows you to play a groove with out continuously holding down a key. To stop the groove playing press the groove key again. Additionally with this feature you can play individual drum hits over a midi groove. Please note that if you use this feature and your playing over a busy groove you may hear some odd phasing sounds. This is most likely due to doubling up a similar hit played at the same time live and via the midi groove.

    6. Round-robin reduction knobAllows you to adjust the amount of used round-robin. The more round-robin, the more realistic the performance. Round-robin refers to the process of cycling through multiple alternate samples/recordings of a particular hit type creating a more human feel. For example, an instrument with 4 microphones, 5 velocities, 10 round robin, and 15 hit types would equal to 3,000 samples. So loading an instrument with less round-robin will substantially decrease the sample count.

How do I assign grooves to keys

Go to the Mapping page then select and double click on a groove via the Groove folder menu. Once the groove is selected click on an empty groove slot and then assign it to a key of your choice. If you wish to chromatically assign all your grooves up the keyboard please go to the tool menu and turn on Enable Chromatic Groove Assignment (Make sure to turn this option on first before you start assigning grooves). Please note after turning the chromatic function on you must manually assign the first groove to a key. Once that is done all you need to do is double click on each groove thereafter and the system will do all the hard work!

Can I make my own multi?

Yes but only using our provided taiko drums. Please follow these steps:

    1. Firstly load the World Inspire Set - Builder multi (Empty).

2 Press the INIT button and save the multi patch as a NEW file. Close and open it again.

    3. After loading press the OK button. You are now ready to start building the instrument.

    4. Now load all the instruments you wish to be part of the multi. After loading the instruments in to the multi you will notice that each instrument will be assigned from midi channel 1 and up (1, 2, 3, 4, etc)

    5. The next step is to start linking the multi to each instrument. Go to the Multi instrument setup. The first thing it should say on the display is master. You will use this area to control global settings over all the instruments, but first we must setup each instrument before this will have any effect. Click on the arrow right of the display and notice that it switches to 1 (Midi channel 1).

    6. Move the mouse down to the instrument assign drop down menu and select the instrument assigned to midi channel 1 (i.e. Wine Barrel Taiko Ens)

    7. Press the Active button

    8. And finally select the root key to chromatically upwards assign the instruments hits. This is done via the root on display.

You have now successfully linked your first instrument to the multi. Please follow steps 2 to

5 to link the rest of your instruments.

For example (Step 2) by clicking on the right arrow again number 2 will appear switching to midi channel 2. You will now need to select the instrument assigned to midi channel 2 etc.

Once you have assigned all your instruments you are ready to play!!

    World Percussion Taiko User Guide

How do I add my own midi grooves to the user folder for individual instruments?

Due to the way our midi engine works you will need to place your grooves in 1 location. Please make sure you give them unique names (i.e. dont call it midi groove 1.mid etc, call it something useful like epiccat.mid)

Firstly locate your World Percussion Taiko Folder

Next place your grooves in this location:

World Percussion Taiko/Instruments/Midi Grooves/Instruments/[INSTRUMENT NAME i.e. Wine Barrel Taiko Ensemble Midi]/User

Now your midi grooves will appear in the user folder within the instruments groove folder menu.

How do I add my own midi grooves to the user folder for multi instruments?

For multi instruments you will need to place

your grooves in 2 locations. Please make sure you give them unique names (i.e. once again dont call it midi groove 1.mid etc, call it something useful like epiccat.mid)Now place your grooves in this location:

    If using a mac please copy your midi files to this folder:Mac HD/Library/Application Support/Native Instruments/Kontakt 5/midi/Evolution Series/World Inspire Sets/User

    If on a PC:/Users/Name of User/Documents/Native Instruments/Kontakt 5/midi/Evolution Series/World Inspire Sets/User

Now your midi grooves will appear in the user folder in the multis groove folder menu.

When playing a multi how do I know what groove Im playing?

Unlike when using an individual instrument the only way to know what groove you are playing on the keyboard is by looking at the bottom left hand corner of kontakts interface. There the midi grooves name will appear when being played.

    Surround Sound

Another important feature of this library is the ability to mix in surround sound. By suppling the room close and room far microphone sets - it makes it easy to create a surround sound space. For example you could always place the room close microphone set in the front speakers and the room far in the back.

In order to set an instrument up in surround sound, you will need to make sure your version of kontakt is configured correctly. Please refer to the Kontakt reference manual for more information.
