International Marathon

Dear Athletes and Friends,

On behalf of the Board of Directors, we would like to offer our congratulations to all who participated in the 16th presentation of the Big Sur International Marathon and its related events.

1999’s first place finisher, Arsenio Ortiz of New York, returned to Big Sur to recapture his title in a winning time of 2:25:36. This year’s strong headwinds didn’t hamper Ortiz’s 5:33 pace and he pulled away from secoid place winner Sergei Nochevny in the early miles of the race. Equally strong was the women’s race, with Russian Janna Malkova not only winning, but placing sixth overall. Her time of 2:46:41 was almost 15 minutes faster than second place Kari Distefano of Colorado, whose finishing time of 3:00:53 made her the first master’s woman.

In 2001 our various events attracted a total field of 10,064 runners and walkers. The Marathon had 4,013 entrants with a finishing field of 2,597. The Power Walk had 561 registered walkers of which 369 crossed the Finish Line. Of those participating, 55.5% were male and 44.5 % female.

The leaders set a fa st pace on the firs t downhill mile.

While the bulk of entrants hailed from all 50 states and Washington, D.C., we were well represented internationally, with runners and walkers traveling from 19 different countries. They came from as far away as Hong Kong and Japan. The two largest contingents were from Mexico and Germany. Within the United States and outside of California, the greatest number of runners came from Texas, Washington, New York, Colorado and Illinois.

We would like to offer our heartfelt thanks to CALTRANS,Monterey County Supervisors, the cities of Carmel, Monterey, Pacific Grove, Seaside, Marina and Sand City for their unparalleled cooperation and support. The Big Sur International Marathon also would like to thank the communities of Big Sur, Palo Colorado Canyon and the Carmel Highlands, as well as the staff and students of the Defense Language Institute. Our continued success is a direct result of the generous contributions of time and energy that our corps of over 2,000 Monterey County volunteers provides us.

The Big Sur International Marathon also recognizes the many contributions of our numerous sponsors. We thank those of you who took the time to drop them a note of appreciation. Our sponsors are directly responsible for the quality of care we are able to give our runners and walkers throughout race weekend.

Finally, we offer congratulations to our special Grizzled Vets who have started and finished all 16 BSIMs. We look forward to seeing their streak unbroken in 2002!

Our mission is to produce a truly first class event on the most spectacular 26.2-mile marathon course in the world. According to your report cards, e-mails and letters, we succeeded beyond our wildest expectations. We cordially invite you to join us again in 2002 to take on the challenge of the Big Sur International Marathon and enjoy the splendor of running on the edge of the western world.

Grizzled VetsM i unrelenting band o f stalwart souls who've started andfinished

every Big S u r International Marathon since its genesis!

Beginning in 1986, BSIM was graced with 1800 runners. From the late ‘80’s to the early ‘90’s, fewer and fewer people could say they completed each and every marathon. In 1993,

“Grizzled Veterans” or “Grizzled Vets” became part of the Official Race Results Book lexicon thanks to Founder and Chairman Emeritus, Bill Burleigh. He coined the name to better recognize that special group who kept coming back over and over again. By 1994, there were exactly 68 Grizzled Vets (50 men and 18 women). One year later, Shell Fisher, a local cartoonist and contributor created a contemplative Zen-like bear to help capture staying power and unbridled spirit. This humble, androgynous character has lovingly adorned BSIM as the time-honored Grizzled Vet mascot ever since.

1The RelafA fifth dimension o f fu n

Historically, the Relay has proven to be a very popular alternative to the Marathon and 2001 was no exception. With a record breaking 249 teams signing up well in

advance of race day, I highly recommend teams start organizing now for 2002! As always, the Relay allows runners of all abilities to enjoy the beauty and challenge of the Big Sur course, and this year there was an added sense of competition.

Since the inception of the Relay in 1995, no relay team member has ever crossed the Finish line ahead of the Marathon winner. In 2001 two relay teams took on this challenge, the BOHO RUNNING CLUB and TEAM SMB BABY. Although both teams fell short,I would like to recognize them for their valiant attempts. The overall team winner, the BOHO RUNNING CLUB, had members Jim Scattini, Dan Stefansko, Eric Folkins, Robert Anderson and Steve Gerjart teaming up to finish in 2:30:14. Hot on their heels were Michael Johnson, Javier Naranjos, Gerard Pearlberg, Stacy Van Horn and Erik Mickelson of TEAM SMB BABY, crossing the Finish Line in 2:31:38.

Arsenio Ortiz, the Marathon winner, finished in 2:25:38!

I would like to thank ALL the Relay teams for their participation and enthusiasm during our 7th presentation of the Relay.

Whether you ran for fun or for glory, I hope you enjoyed your stretch of the gorgeous Big Sur coastline. And, keep those creative and entertaining Relay team names coming in 2002!

|n 2001 all of the Big Sur IntSFnatjgpal j? Marajfepn events sold out within six

months of registration opening and the. Walk was no exception! Our very

popular stroll up Highway One filled to capacity by March 1. The 13th presentation of the 10.6-mile Walk began with a breathtaking sunrise that led to a picture perfect day for walking. The early morning chill was quickly forgotten as walkers contemplated the view from Rocky Point of the rugged coastline and pounding surf against the backdrop of Hurricane Point and Point Sur.

At 7:30, warmed by fresh Gloria Jean’s coffee and fueled by Dole bananas and

Rocky Point cinnamon rolls, 1,798 walkers of all ages and abilities began their trek to Carmel. The Walk is the perfect event to be shared by families and friends...mothers and daughters, brothers and sisters, fathers and sons, old friends and new. For those who aren’t up to the rigors of the Marathon, the Walk is a perfect solution. It is even a haven for sidelined marathoners whose injuries won’t permit a 26.2-mile run but will allow a 10.6-mile walk. And face it...who can resist the opportunity to stroll through paradise and revel in the fragrance of the spring wildflowers and the visual delights of the green coastal hillsides?

We are looking forward to our 2002

Power W\lk2001presented by Robert Talbott

2001.. .A Race Odyssey proved that seven IS a lucky number! This year’s Power Walk was our seventh presentation and we lucked out as Mother Nature provided an “ex-spectacular” day (“excellent” and “spectacular”.) NRG Rhythm and Blues provided mood music prior to the Start and the powerful rendition of our National Anthem by two of the Marine Corps finest vocalists provided both inspiration and goose bumps. All of you provided the perspiration. Months of training by the walkers paid off as they completed 21.2 miles along one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in the world. Their experiences on race day will provide memories to be savored for a lifetime.

Our six “Grizzled” Power Walkers were

all in attendance again this year and “walked the walk” in 2001. T he Big Sur International Marathon recognizes and applauds the efforts of Chris Banks,Kathleen Kastner, Claudia McCord, Karen and Paul Munninghoff, Pinky Rice and Kristi Wheeler.

We have already commenced work on next year’s Power Walk and your input is invaluable to us. In 2001 we accepted 561 entrants, but only 369 participants finished under the 5:45 cutoff. In 2002 we would like to see 500 power walkers participating on race day and we are extending the number of entrants to 600. A “no show” factor, due to injury, illness or other reasons, allows us to let more people register.

Congratulations to all 2001 finishers on

your wonderful achievement. Good luck in your pursuit of health and fitness, and walk with a happy heart and happy feet. We look forward to seeing you again on April 28,2002.

News 46 5k Runpresented by the Community Hospital o f the Monterey Peninsula

total of 2,066 finishers enjoyed fantastic weather for the 2001 race held on one of the most scenic courses in the country, lop

honors went to Steve Moreno, 23, of Salinas, California, with a time of 14:59, a solid seven seconds ahead of second place finisher, Dan Nelson, 37, of Bend, Oregon. Twenty five year old Nicole Kucikov of Fresno, California, won the women’s race with a time of 17:39. She held a five second lead over runner up Tenaya Adams, 27, of Los Gatos, California. The race attracted a high percentage of elite runners as once more it served as the championship race for the PAUSATF Road Grand Prix series, offering $2,200 in prize money.

The elite runners weren’t the only winners at the News 46 5K presented by the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula. Various Monterey County schools had the opportunity to receive cash awards based upon their levels of participation in the race. Prior to this year there were only three categories of participation, but thanks to the generosity of the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula a fourth category was created, allowing even more schools to benefit. The school children, who ran in the second “wave” of the race, had a total of $9,000 awarded to their various schools.

Race entertainment, provided once again by jester and magician “T-Bone,” proved to be a tremendous success. Monterey County schools’ participants received a pre-race warm-up, the chance to run with T-Bone in the 5K and a post-race magic show. T-Bone has become a regular at the race and will return once again for the 11th presentation of this event next year.

Finally, a special thanks to our volunteers, whose investment of many long hours of hard work paid off handsomely. Our scenic course was in top-notch condition and the Start and Finish lines received tremendous support from our many loyal volunteers. Thanks go also to News 46 and the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula whose generous support of the 5K

Our Big SurvivorsAccepting the challenge in 2001

The 2001 class of Big-Survivors is ready for the “fina l exam ”

ur third year of the Big Sur Marathon Training Clinics began

I ’ in November and ran through the beginning of May 2001.

Once more, the presentations and the response to them was an overwhelming success, with 195 people attending at least one of the sessions. There were 100 “regulars” at the Clinics and 105 finishers in the Marathon itself, up from last year’s 100 and 1999’s 75. Of these finishers, 55 were first time marathoners, and 8 people had never even run before!

A huge thanks to the Community Hospital of the Monterey Peninsula whose sponsorship provided us with a place to conduct the Clinics as well as refreshments for participants. Another sponsor was T he Treadm ill, who provided w ould-be marathoners with coupons for discounts on shoes and running gear. Turtle Bay Taqueria, owned by local runner Jefferson Seay, donated Turtle “bucks,” a nice discount on some healthy, delicious food. Local runners with expertise in a variety of

venues provided support and a wealth of information on all aspects of running a marathon. T hey spoke at our Clinics and covered subjects including training, clothing, shoes, diet, stretching, injury prevention, women’s issues, motivation and, finally, how to tackle and survive the Big Sur course. Clinic participants were invited to join a local running club in their weekly group runs and to the Big Sur sponsored “Popsicle Run,” where they ran a “mini” Big Sur.. .complete with hills, wind and rain. Also new this year was the official Big Sur “Training Guide,” a compilation of the information provided at the Clinics plus much more. T he money from the sale of this guide all goes to charity.

The 2001 Big Survivors took on the challenge and finished trium phantly. At our “Success Party” the Tuesday following the Marathon, new marathoners shared pizza and their stories, an evening that was intensely emotional and motivational. Tears flowed and laughter resounded as, one by one, the Big Survivors told their tales of pain,

perseverance and pure joy in their personal quest to finish their first Big Sur Marathon. Despite sore legs and blistered toes, most were already inquiring on how to sign up for next year’s event.

Strawberries offset the pain of the fina l miles.

hey fold t-shirts by the thousands, they clean 26.2 miles of highway both before and after the Marathon, they hand out Gatorade

and Clif Shot, and they offer a smile, a hug and a medallion to exhausted runners finishing their race. They direct traffic and dish out pounds of pasta the night before the Marathon. They call out split times at each mile along the course for hours and offer encouragement along with fluids at the aid stations. Many arise at 3:00 a.m. race morning, if they’ve gone to bed at all. Their ranks include school children and senior citizens, men and women, and all of them are eager to pitch in and do whatever is necessary, not only on race day, but in the weeks and months preceding the event.

Many of our volunteers have been with us since the inaugural Marathon in 1986 while others are first timers. Many have friends or family participating in one or more of the Marathon weekend events and volunteering allows them to share in the excitement. All of our volunteers are NICE people who sincerely wish to see the Big Sur International Marathon continue to grow and prosper. When you see them in 2002 throughout the course of the weekend, please remember to tell them “thanks.” Without their tremendous support the BSIM would not exist, much less become the world-class event that it is today. We offer our deepest thanks to each and every one of our volunteers! O

has completed the E igSur International Marathon, a 26.2 milefootrace. As a finisher of the course along Highway One, you are now a member of the Big Sur International Marathon Club. Membership is limited to those runners who have finished the distance. You have accomplished a major athletic feat; very, very few people in the world can say they have completed a marathon. You can say you ran the best.

In witness whereof, I have set my hand this 29th day of April, 2001.
