APSSA Student Steering Committee Workshop One: “Program Development”

Friday April 16, 9:00 am - 11:30 am

The Asia Pacific Student Services Association’s (APPSA) 12th International Conference will be held here at QUT on from 6-9 July, 2010. Parallel to the professional conference is a student conference, which is traditionally attended by student leaders from leading universities in the Asia Pacific University. As co-hosts of the conference, QUT will take an active part in the development and delivery of this event. We are looking for students to help with the organisation of this event. Student Steering/Organising Committee·        Assist with the development of the student conference content,·        Promotion of the student conference to other students/student groups,·        Assist with the organisation of the conference, and·        Possibly acting as ‘hosts’ to student delegates and coordinating conference volunteers.

Exclusive privileges of being on the Student Steering/Organising committee are:·        FREE entry to the conference (which normally costs $475)·        The opportunity to meet students from international, other Australian and local universities·        Valuable learning experience in the development and delivery of an international conference·        An opportunity to further enhance your leadership skills and organisational skills

Student Conference Steering Committee

Mood boards (sometimes called inspiration boards) are used in a variety of ways. You’ve no doubt seen them used for Interior Design, where fabric swatches and paint chip samples are grouped together on a poster to show a homeowner what type of atmosphere the new decor will create. They are also used frequently in Fashion to highlight trends and styles. In essence they are a compilation of inspirational elements used by designers to flesh out ideas at the beginning of a design project.

Things that can be explored in the mood board include photography style, color palettes, typography, patterns, and the overall look and feel of an idea. Soft or hard? Grungy or clean? Dark or light? A rough collage of colors, textures and pictures is all it takes to evoke a specific style or feeling.

Mood Boarding is regularly applied to basic idea generation and can be useful across a number of different contexts. For the purposes of this workshop we will not be emulating a tradition ‘Mood Boarding’ effect but rather we will explore the following concepts and ideas through a series of mind maps and conversations:

How do we want the conference to:

Feel Look Sound

What emotional response do we want the delegates to have about the overall conference?

Do we want there to be a dress code for delegates?

Do we want to incorporate music into the structure of our day?

How do we want to start and end each day?

What are the layouts for the rooms? Is there room for change or interpretation of seating arrangements?

Language affects our thinking. What type of language do we want to feature amongst our program and presentations?

Where do we anticipate the high points and low points to fall throughout the conference?

Do we want to feature social media / multimedia or do steer clear of technology altogether?

What voice do we want to hear most of? E.g. Gen Y, The Green’s perspective, Social Innovation etc?

Mood Boarding

Alissa has been engaged by QUT Student Services to work with the Student Steering Committee to role out the 2010 APSSA Student Services Conference. Read on to learn about her background, skills and work history.

Alissa Phillips, Social Innovator and Founder of s.p.a.c.e., holds a Bachelor’s Degree of Creative Industries and a Masters in Music Therapy. Her successful Music Therapy private practice was followed by the formation of a not for profit organisation s.p.a.c.e Alissa applies her skills specifically to disability services, however, her reach of influence flows into volunteerism, the department of communities and education, social enterprise and the not for profit landscape.

Alissa believes that inclusive communities can be embraced through the education, positive experiences and community collaboration.

“We can improve attitudes and relationships amongst diverse communities by engaging all parties in dynamic discussions and meaningful experiences surrounding difference, social responsibility and what it would take to create an inclusive community.” - Alissa Phillips

Alissa’s skills are in interpersonal relations as well as project management and paradigm shifts. She is eager to share her unique experiences with other not for profit, community and corporate organisations through facilitation of task forces, reference groups and professional speaking engagements. Alissa regularly shares her learnings at conferences, schools and universities, networking breakfasts and community events and forums.
