Cover price upheld for

damaged Oriental jars

TWO very determined bidderschased a pair of large 18thcentury imari jars with coversto £5,700 at Brightwellsrecent antiques and fine art

saleheld at Easters Court, Leominster.Impressive pieces of this type were

difficult to fire successfully so thatrelatively few were made. Theirscarcity appeal was greatly increasedbecause the covers were still presentand intact.

On the down side they were bothcracked in many places and the originaldecorative handles were missing. The

eventual buyer obviously anticipated agood return on the investment evenafter expensive restoration.

Other Oriental ceramics included aChinese baluster vase with unusualmoulded figures at £380 and a large blueand white vase at £230. A blue andwhite Japanese plate made £120.

Worcester ceramics were led by aBarr Flight & Barr plate with a shelland seaweed painted centre panel at£460 and another example made thesame price. An elegant urn shaped potpourri with a painted decoration soldfor £190; a comport painted with SouthAfrican flowers made £160 and another,slightly smaller one, reached £100. AFlight Barr & Barr shell painted platewithin gilded dendritic branches made£380.

The earliest piece of jewellery was awhite metal oval locket, probably silver,with the inscription “Quis tempery a

Lacluimis Fanit 1648” that sold for £950.Among much later pieces a diamondband ring, channel set, made £600; adiamond line 18ct bracelet its brilliantcut stones with flexible square linking sold for £700; an emerald and diamondnecklace with a claw set carvedemerald, £600 with an opal and asapphire pendant, £300.

An Arts and Crafts silver opal matrixand seed pearl pendant suspended froma gold chain achieved £250.

A Georgian tortoiseshell circularbox, its lid inset with a complexpastoral scene, aroused a lot of interestamong a good selection of objets d’artand made £420. A carved ivory letteropener made £360; an 18th century

ivory cased timer, £480; a carved jadedisc decorated with lions, £260 and a jade plaque, £290. A pair of cut glassscent bottles in a domed walnut boxwith gilt metal mounts sold for £160,while an ivory stick handle in the formof an American Civil War soldierchanged hands for £500.

A silver and tortoiseshell heartshaped trinket box, London, 1908, wasbought for £230 and a snuff box made

by George Unite, Birmingham, 1875,sold for £210. A pin cushion in the formof a bull dog, made by Adey & Lovekinin Birmingham, 1905, reached £180; apair of table pheasants bearing importmarks, £420; an impressive andcomplete dressing case in burr walnutand with an unusually wide variety of fittings, £1,020 and an Arts and Craftsthree-handled goblet made in London in1904, £230.

Table silver continues to sell wellbecause of its weight. A 36 oz. George Vtea service made £360 and an ArtNouveau service, made in Birminghamin 1910 went for £290. A pair of continental silver Georgian stylecandlesticks made £520, while a pint

mug by P&A Bateman, London, 1791 – acollectors piece – sold for £230. A six-piece condiment set with matching spoons, Birmingham, 1946 made £220;an 1895 coffee pot, £105 and a George VItwo handled bowl sold at £160.

An oil on canvas study of a bayracehorse, Molly Bawn, dated 1882 andpainted by H Whittaker Reville sold for£1,000. Amongst the remaining variedselection of paintings the best prices

were for a wooded landscape painted inoils on a panel and attributed toEdward Williams Senior (£340); a stilllife of fruit and a goblet attributed toJoseph Ankcorn and dated 1864 (£380);an oil on canvas, The Wye Valley from Lenton, painted by Anthony Kerr, 1974,(£320) and a watercolour, At LudlowCastle, drawn by Isaac Shew in 1840 ,(£340).

The auction included a special ethnicsection with a group of Australianaboriginal shields and sticks making £460. A leaded hardwood club withcarved letters and motifs sold for £550and a Shi ceremonial headpiece fromEast Congo, decorated with shells andfur, reached £80.

PRETTY: The Georgian tortoiseshell box which sold

IT was full steam ahead for Halls whena rare locomotive engine nameplatesold for £16,000.

The Torquay Manor nameplate wasbought by a telephone bidder from thesouth of England. It had come from acollector in the Machynlleth area of mid-Wales, where the locomotivesoperated until the mid-1960s.

Built in 1938, the 7800 TorquayManor was the first of the Manor Classlocomotives and was originally due tobe called Ashley Manor. Its first depotallocation was Wolverhamptonfollowed by Tyseley, Oswestry andShrewsbury. It was withdrawn from

service in August 1964. The Manorswere the smallest class of GreatWestern locomotives with the 4-6-0wheel arrangement, both in size andthe number built.

Many of them worked over the mainlines in Mid Wales, including Cambrian Railway, on such trains asthe Cambrian Coast Express. By 1959,

there were 21 Manors congregated inMid and South Wales.

Others of the class operated in theBirmingham, Gloucester and Herefordareas while a handful was stationed atReading.

Andrew Beeston, senior auctioneerand valuer at Halls, said: “Themajority of these Manor classnameplates and tender plates are soldin specialist railway auctions but itwas fitting that these were sold at ourWelsh Bridge auction house inShrewsbury, as they had a long association with Mid Wales and theMarches.”
