About this Document This manual has been prepared to help ensure safety in the Wood Shop at the Maryland Institute College of Art. No document can replace actual instruction, and this manual should be seen only as a supplement to thorough supervised training. It is the responsibility of the user to utilize their training, experience, and good judgment to work safely. Though many of the tool safety procedures described in this document may apply broadly to tools of the given type, this manual has been written specifically for the MICA Wood Shop and the tools contained therein. This manual is a living document and will be updated to reflect changes and additions to the MICA Wood Shop. An up-to-date version can always be found in the shop. WOOD SHOP EMERGENCY PROCEDURE

CALL 9-911

(9 to get an outside line then 911 for local fire, police, and ambulance) 1. GIVE THE EXACT LOCATION OF YOUR EMERGENCY:

1300 W MT ROYAL AVE MICA CAMPUS FOX BUILDING (large, red brick building next to the glass building) WOOD SHOP- ROOM 012 – IN THE BASEMENT

2. GIVE THE PHONE NUMBER FROM WHERE YOU ARE CALLING: 410-225-2537 3. GIVE YOUR NAME 3. DESCRIBE THE NATURE OF THE EMERGENCY (INJURY, FIRE, ETC). 4. STAY NEAR THE PHONE, IF POSSIBLE, TO RECEIVE ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTIONS.

THEN CALL 3333 FOR CAMPUS SAFETY

(Call 410-423-3333 from a non-campus phone)

Campus Safety should be notified of all injuries. They can provide assistance with First-Aid, injury assessment, and reporting. Minor injuries not requiring attention from a medical professional can be treated using the First Aid kits mounted in the Wood Shop.

1. Turnoffthepowerswitchonthetool/machine.

2. Ifthemachineisonitsowndedicatedcircuitbreakerinthemainbreakerboxes,turnthatbreakeroff.

3. Unplugthetool/machinefromthepowersource.

4. GetaLOTObox,lock,andkeyfromtheLOTOsignboard.Notethatsomeboxeshaveexpandednotchesforoversixedpowercords.

5. Openthedoorsofthelockoutboxandplacetheboxaroundtheplugofthemalfunctioningtool/machine.Closethedoorsoftheboxaroundthecord,placethelockthroughtheringsonthedoors,andlockthelock.

6. Ifthemachineishard-wired,turnoffthelocalshut-offbreaker,placetheLOTOhaspthroughtheholeinthebreakerhandle,andlockthehaspclosed.

7. FilloutatagfromtheLOTOsignboardandattachittothelock.

8. NotifytheWoodShopmanagerverbally,byemail([email protected]),orwithawrittennote.Includedetailedinformationaboutthetool/machinemalfunction.

9. Keepthekeytothelock.DonotgivethekeytoanyoneotherthantheWoodShopManager.TheWoodShopManagerhasacopyofallLOTOkeys.Astheindividualwholockedoutthetool/machine,onlyyouandtheWoodShopmanagercanallowthatmachinetobebroughtbackonline.

10.Afterthenecessaryrepairshavebeenmadetothetool/machine,thelockoutboxmayberemovedandreturned,withthelockandkey,totheLOTOsignboard.

Wood Shop Instructor Info Lock Out Tag Out

The Lock Out Tag Out (LOTO) procedure is an important aspect of shop safety. The LOTO system takes malfunctioning tools/machines off line, preventing possible injuries. Once a tool/machine is identified as malfunctioning, damaged, or otherwise needing to be taken off line, follow the LOTO procedure listed below.

There is a LOTO signboard in the Tool Room. On this board, there are multiple lock out boxes hanging, locks with keys, lockout hasps, and LOTO tags.

Do not attempt to make repairs to tools/machines that are beyond your training and expertise. Follow this LOTO procedure and allow the shop manager to make the needed repairs.

9. Keepthekeytothelock.DonotgivethekeytoanyoneotherthantheWoodShopManager.TheWoodShopManagerhasacopyofallLOTOkeys.Astheindividualwholockedoutthetool/machine,onlyyouandtheWoodShopmanagercanallowthatmachinetobebroughtbackonline.

If another Monitor is there to work the following shift, obviously some of the lock down steps should be omitted. However, be sure to sweep and tidy the shop so that you are not leaving a mess for the next person to clean up. Also, pass on any relevant information to the next Monitor regarding the people already working in the shop or any other issues from your shift.

6. Adjusttheupperassemblysothatitisapproximately1/4“abovethework.

7. Stockmustbeheldflatonthetable,orotherwisejiggedsecurely.

8. Maintainatwo-inchmarginofsafety.Keepyourhandsoneithersideoftheblade,notinlinewiththeblade.

9. Useapushsticktofeedsmallpiecesthroughthesawandtoremovescrapsfromaroundtheblade.

10.Ifapieceofwoodfallsintotheslotinthetable,shutthepoweroff,waitforthebladetostop,andthenremovethepiece.

11.Beawareofthepossibilityofbindingthebladebytryingtocutacurveoftoosmallaradius.Makeradialreliefcutsbeforecuttingatightcurve.

12.Planyourcutstoavoidbackingoutofalongorcomplicatedcut.Ifbackingoutcan-notbeavoided,movethematerialslowlyandinlinewiththebladetoavoidpullingthebladeawayfromtheupperassembly.Itmaybenecessarytoturnoffthepowertothesaw,andbackouttheworkpieceafterthebladehasstoppedmoving.

13.Ifabladebreaks,turnoffthemachineandmoveawayuntilallmotionstops.Ifyouheararhythmicclickingnoise,thismayindicateacrackintheblade.

14.Donotleaveanysawrunningunattended.Whenfinished,turnoffthesawandbringthebladetoastopusingthebrake.

6. Lockthedrillbitintothechucktightly,usingthechuckkeyandeachoftheholesinthechuck.Thechuckkeymustberemovedbeforeturningonthepower.

7. Thetablemustbesettotheproperheightforyouroperationandlockedintoplace.

8. Clampallworktothetable.Donotholdstockbyhand.Maintainasixinchmarginofsafety.

9. Withdrawthebitfromthestockfrequentlytocleartheshavingsandcoolthebit.Clearchipsandshavingswithabrushorstickwhenthemachineisrunning.

10.Alwaysdrillintoabackingboardwhendrillingthroughstock.

11.Makesuretherotatingspeedofthebitissetproperlyforyouroperation.Askyourinstructororthetechforhelp.

12.Whenusingamortisingattachment,flycutter,orotherspecialset-up,haveyourinstructororthetechcheckitbeforeturningonthepower.

11.Donotcrossyourarmsinordertooperatethesawandholdmaterial;switchhands.

12.Donotoverreach.Alwayskeepproperfootingandbalance.

13.Donotreacharound,behind,orunderneaththesawbladeunlessthesawisstopped.

14.Allowthemotortoreachfullspeedbeforeengagingthebladewiththewood.

15.Donotforcethetool;allowthebladetomoveeasilythroughthematerial.

16.Smallpiecesofwoodcanbethrownbythesawbladeatdangerousspeeds.Withsmallcut-offs,allowthebladetostopcompletelybeforeraisingitoutofthematerial.

17.Withthebladestopped,removeanysmallscrapsofwoodthatfallintotheslotinthecuttingtable.

9. Keephandsawayfromabrasivesurfaces.Useajigorholdingdevicetoholdsmallorthinpiecesofwoodtopreventinjuriestothefingersorhands.

10.Useonlylightpressure–justenoughtoholdtheworkagainsttheabrasive.

11.StationarySandersarefinishingtools–notcarvingorshapingtools.Usethemaccordingly.

12.Whenusingthediscsanders,alwayssandonthedown-sideofthediscsothatthestockisdrivenintothetablebythemachine’srotation.

13.Usetheentiresurfaceoftheabrasive.Avoidunevenwearpatterns.

14.Sandonlydrywoodthathasnotbeenalreadyusedorpainted.

15.Whensandingangles,donotholdthematerialupoffthetable.Laythematerialflatonthetableandsimplyrotateit,orsetthetabletothedesiredangle.

7. Checkthestockcarefullybeforesurfacingtomakesureitisfreeofknotsordefects.Neversurfaceplywood,woodby-products,orwoodthathasbeenpaintedorused.

8. Cleanroughlumberwithawirebrushtoremovedirtandrevealanyembeddedmetal.

9. Donotsurfaceanystockunder12”inlengthorunder1/2”thick.

10.Themaximumdepthofcutshouldbe1/16”.

11.Useapushblockwhenjointingathinpieceoflumberorwhenfaceplaning.

12.Holdtheboardfirmlyagainstthefenceandtable.Nevermakefreehandcuts.

13.Planewiththegrain.Neverplanetheendgrainofstock.

14.Keepyourfingersawayfromtherevolvingcutterhead.Anybodilycontactwiththemovingbladewillcausesevereinjury.

15.Donotstanddirectlybehindthewood.Kickbackscanoccur.

16.Turnthejointeroffimmediatelyifitdoesnotsoundrightorifsliversofwoodcatchbetweenthebladesandthetable.

17.Neverletgoofthestockduringacut.

6. Checkstockfordefects,suchasknots,thatmightcausetheboardtosplitunderpres-sure.

7. Neversurfacepaintedorvarnishedstock.Usedlumberofanykindmaynotbesur-faced.

8. Makesurethatthebottomoftheboardbeingsurfacedistrue.

9. Theshortestboardthatmaybesurfacedshouldbeatleasttwoincheslongerthanthedistancebetweenthein-feedandtheout-feedroller.

10.Alwaysstandtoonesideofthetable,neverdirectlyinlinewiththestockbeingdressed.Suddenkickbackcanoccur.

11.Neverstoopdowntowatchtheboardbeingsurfaced.

12.Determinethegraindirectionandfeedthelumberintothemachinesothatcuttingwillbedonewiththegrain.

13.Asthefeedrollerstakeholdofthestock,allowthemachinetopullthelumberintoitself.Donotpushthematerialthoughmachineoncetherollershaveengaged.Onceyounolongerneedtosupporttheweightofthelumber,takeyourhandsawayfromtheboard.

14.Donotattempttoremovetoomuchmaterialinonepass.Raisethetablebynomorethanahalfturnperpass.

15.Keepthelowertablerollersintheirlowestpositionwhentheundersideofthestockissmoothandfinished.Whenthesurfaceisrough,raisetherollerstoallowthestocktopassthroughthemachinemoreeasily.

16.setevenwithorbarelyabovethesurfaceofthetable.TheyFeedthestockintothemachineatdifferentpointsalongthewidthoftheblade.Thishelpstopreventunevenwear.

17.shouldonlyberaisedwhenthebottomsurfaceofthestockisstillrough.

18.Ifthestockislong,getsomeonetoreceivethestockasitleavesthemachine.

19.Beespeciallycarefulofyourfingerswhensurfacingashortboard.Sometimesthein-feedrollerwilltiptheboardupandthendownquicklysothatfingersgetpinchedbetweenthetabletopandthestock.

20.Surfacingthinstockrequirestheuseofanauxiliarysupporttabletopreventthestockfrombeingforceddownintothemachine.Consultyourinstructorortheshopmonitortosetthisup.

4. Checkthewoodtomakesureithasnodefectsthatwouldcauseittobreakwhenturning.Removeallmoldywoodimmediately.

5. Checkallgluejointsbeforemountingthestock.Aweakjointmaycomeapartwhenrevolvingathighspeeds.Makesureallglued-upstockiscompletelydrybeforeturning.

6. Fastenstocksecurelybetweencenters.Makesurethetailstockislockedbeforeturningonthepower.

7. Adjustthetoolrestasclosetothestockaspossible.Thenrevolvethestockbyhandtomakesureitclearstherest.

8. Alwaysstopthelathebeforemakinganyadjustmentssuchaschangingthepositionofthetoolrest.

9. Runallstockattheslowestspeeduntilitisrounded.

10.Forstockover6”indiameter,maintainslowerspeed;from3”to6”,mediumspeed;under3”,usefasterspeeds.

11.Holdturningtoolsfirmlyinbothhands.

12.Keepthetoolrestasclosetotheworkaspossible.Atintervals,stopthelatheandreadjust.

13.Makesurethestockisfirmlyfastenedtothefaceplatebeforeturning.

14.Removethetoolrestwhensandingorpolishing.Ifyoudon’t,yourfingersmaygetcaughtbetweenthetoolrestandthestock.

5. Neverusetheripfenceasaguideifthedistancebetweenthebladeandthefenceisgreaterthanthelengthofstockagainstthefence.Usethecross-cutsawinstead.

6. Nevercutfreehandonthetablesaw.Usetheripfenceforripping.Useslidingcrosscutfixtureforcross-cutting.

7. Beforecutting,makesurethefenceislockedandallfixturesaresecure.

8. Usesawguardasmuchaspossible.Someoperationscannotbedonewiththeguardinplace,however.Ifstandardguardscannotbeused,useothersafetydevicessuchasapushstick,featherboard,holdingjigsandfixtures.

9. Usetheanti-kickbacksplitterwheneveraspossible.Someoperations,suchasdadocuts,rabbits,andangles,cannotbedonewiththesplitterinplace,however.Ifthesplittercannotbeused,useothersafetydevicessuchasapushstick,featherboard,holdingjigsandfixtures.

10.Makesurethebladeissharpandisproperlymounted.Dullbladesaredangerous.Theyaremorelikelytocausekickback.Dullbladesalsorequiremorepushing.Thisincreasesthechancesofyourhandslipping.

11.Makeadjustmentswiththesawatadeadstop.Adjustthesawsothatthebladeclearsthetopofthestockby1/8”to1/4”.

22.Useallofyoursenseswhenoperatingthetablesaw.Ifyouseethatthematerialhasmovedawayfromthefence,feelresistanceagainstinfeed,hearanyunusualnoiseorthemotorlowerinpitch,orsmellburningwood,thenhaltyouroperationtoavoidapotentialkickback.

23.Whenrippinglargestock,havesomeoneassistyoutosupportthematerialwhereitisnotheldbythetable.Neverallowtheassistanttopullortilttheboardasitisbeingripped.Theoperatormustalwaysbeinfullcharge.

24.Whencuttingiscomplete,turnoffthepowerandstandtoonesideuntilthemachinecomestoacompletestop.Removeallspecialsetupsandanywastestock.Setbladetosquare.Lowerbladesothatteetharebelowthetablesurface.



25.Makesurethatthefenceissetattheproperdistancefromthebladesothatthemeasurementsonthefenceareaccurate.Tightenbothleverstolockthefenceandpreventitfromsliding.

26.Checkthatthecross-cutfenceissetsquaretothebladeoratthedesiredangle.Tightentheknobontopofthefencetolockitinpositionandpreventitfrompivoting.

27.Setthestopatthedesiredlength.Lockitinposition.Thenflipitdown.Forlongmaterial,usetheextensionstopandlockitatthedesiredlength.

28.Alwayskeepthemajorityofthestockonthefencesideoftheblade.Thismayrequirethatyoumeasureandmarkyourmaterial,alignitwiththeblade,slidethestoptoyourmaterial,andlockitinplace.

29.Whencuttingmateriallessthan28”wide(inthedimensionparalleltotheblade),thefenceshouldbemountedonthenearsideoftheslidingtable.Duringthecut,useonehandtoholdthematerialdowntothetableandtopullittighttothefence.Usetheotherhandtosteadilypushtheslidingtableforward.

30.Formateriallargerthan28”wide,thefencemustbereversedandmountedonthefarsideofthetable.Duringthecut,useonehandtoholdthematerialdownandtopushittighttothefence.Usetheotherhandtopulltheslidingtabletowardyou.Balancethispushandpulltosteadilyfeedthematerialforwardintotheblade.Whencuttingpieceswiderthanthetable,usetheextensionhandletopullthetable.

31.Settingthesawforabevelcutanglesthebladetowardthefence.Youmustmovethefenceawayfromthebladetoavoidcuttingintoit.Beforemakinganycut,alwaysmakesurethatthetableslidesfreelyandthatthefencewillnotcontacttheblade.

32.Whencuttinglongpieces,itmaybenecessarytohaveanotherpersonsupportthefarendofthematerialsothatitdoesnotdropbelowtheextensionstop.

33.Aftermakingacut,turnoffthesaw.Then,flipthestopupandpullthematerialawayfromthebladebeforeslidingthetabletothefrontofthesaw.

9. Setthedepthofthebladewhilethesawisunplugged.Lockthedepthofcutsothatthelowesttoothdoesnotextendmorethan1/4”beneaththewoodbeingcut.Keepallcordsclearofcuttingarea.

10.Beforecutting,checkthematerialforobstructionsorotherobjectssuchasnailsorscrews.

11.Securestockbeingcuttoavoidmovement.

12.Makesurethestockissupportedinamannerthatwillnotcausethematerialtopinchthebladeasorafteritiscut.

13.Makesurethatthebladeisnotincontactwiththematerialwhenstartingthepower.

14.Allowthesawbladetoreachfullspeedbeforestartingtocut.

8. Ensurethatthebitissecurelymountedinthechuckandthatthebaseistight.

9. Makesurethatthebitcanrotatefreelybeforeswitchingonthemotor.

10.Securethestock.Neverrelyonyourselforasecondpersontosupportorholdthematerial.Suddentorqueorkickbackfromtheroutercancausedamageorinjury.

11.Neverturnonthepoweruntilyouareinworkingposition.

12.Holdthetoolfirmlybutlightlyinbothhands.


14.Feedtherouterbitintothematerialatafirm,controlledspeed.Therouterbitrevolvesclockwise.Whencuttingstraightedges,movetherouterfromlefttoright.Whenmakingcircularcuts,movetherouterinacounter-clockwisedirection.
