We are coming down to the final months of our 2018-19 Season with some more great events on the schedule. Speaking of great, our February Social Hour and Luncheon presenters were outstanding! Professor Linda Frey delighted us with a great history of Napoleon and Owen Sirrs (or was it COL Valentin Plyagin) intrigued and informed us about Russian Strategic Geography. Both were well attended in spite of the weather, and very well received. If you missed the presentations, you can check the website (www.wmmoa.org) to see what you missed. The March line up looks just as good with CAPT Scott Reed, USN (Ret), briefing at the Social Hour on Special Operations with Special Assets (remember, the Social Hour is at Westside Lanes this month). At the Luncheon, we will welcome LTC Chris Wellman, USA, who is the Professor Military Science (PMS) for the U of M. He will share the current status of the ROTC program and the Griz Battalion. The Board wants to say thank you to all the members who are inviting their friends to come to one of our events and check out the Chapter. Your efforts are appreciated and we are growing the group with several new members this year. Remember we are all recruiters and your sharing WMMOA with friends is the most effective recruiting tool. We have two big events on the horizon for the end of the season, first the Very Special WMMOA Movie Night Event! A private showing for WMMOA members, friends and family will be on Thursday, March 28 th. at the Roxy Theatre in 35MM on the big screen. We will present the Stanley Kubrick 1964 classic Cold War comedy, “Dr Strangelove”! We have the Roxy from 4 to 7 with Happy Hour appetizers and a no host bar from 4-5 followed by the movie at 5:15. Tickets are available but seating is limited and going fast @ $10. Contact me (President’s comment continued.) Reservations for the WMMOA Annual Banquet on Saturday May 4th begin this month. Tickets are still at

$35 with a great buffet and this year the banquet bar will have Cold Smoke on Tap! Author Elaine Byre

ELAINE LOWRY BRYE, Author and Mom

Elaine Lowry Brye is a mom who knows about letting go. Like many moms, she cried when her kids left home, wishes they’d call and write more, and spends sleepless nights worrying about them. But Elaine’s tears and concerns are even more poignant than most mothers’—because Elaine is the mom of four military officers, one each in the Air Force, Army, Navy, and Marines.

An Army brat turned ROTC candidate turned military wife, Elaine never expected her kids to have a call to serve, and certainly didn’t expect all four to join up. Three of her kids—two sons and a daughter—attended the Naval Academy, and it was there that Elaine got her own calling: she joined the Naval Academy Parents’ Listserv, and began a fifteen-year journey of helping moms and dads adjust to their strange, new, lonely lives as military parents.

Elaine will be sharing her experiences and her book, “BE SAFE, LOVE MOM: A Military Mom’s Stories of Courage, Comfort, and Surviving Life on the Home Front” written by Elaine Lowry Brye with Nan Gatewood

Satter. The evening will one of honoring those family and friends that support our military members.

Mark your calendar, you won’t want to miss it.
