I n t r o d u c t i o n

This booklet is a display of the 2012 Richmond Hill Music Festival. The photography department of the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University assigned this event to the students with the aim to offer them a real world client and editorial experience. All the students were assigned to a specific band to cover both staged- and live images.

During this assigned I had the privilege to work with the rock, blues band, Withond. I have initiated this booklet to embrace their presence at the very successful Richmond Hill Music Festival of 2012. I thoroughly hope you enjoy the content of this booklet and get a better insight of what this event was about.

When did you guys start playing together and how did you find each other?

We met at The Music Kitchen in Newton Park(previously known at Tony’s Place-which was owned by Tony in the band) and started playing together in October 2010.

How did you come to the name Withond?

Barry goes through to Graaf-Reinett quite often and buying Withond (a type of Witblitz-South African booze)in Graaf-Reinet has become a tradition for him and was adapted by the band. They will often drink a shot or two before practice to warm them up. When choosing the band name, they felt it appropriate as their music aim to give the same kick as the drink.

Is this your first time playing at a festival?

Yes, Very Excited!

How often do you have gigs?

Once a month +-

Why do you do what you do? Hope of getting famous or just for the love of music?

They play music for the love of music. Making money to them is a nice extra, but not in the least what they aim to achieve what they do.

Biggest challenge as band? How did you overcome it?

As it is challenges were few for Withond, merely because their aim is not to become famous or making money. Biggest challenge for them was to find a stable drummer as they had problems with drummers before. Fortunately, they have found Tony, which everyone in the band agrees is the best drummer they have ever had.

How do you make time for practice?

“We make time for practice, every Saturday we practice.” All the band members are committed to the band and the odd Saturday does come around where someone cannot make it but most of the time everyone are very reliable.

How would you define your style of music?

Jazz, Blues, Rock. They have this saying: “Lets Withond it”. This basically means to give their songs a twist and unique style, even when not playing their own music.

Is there an album coming soon?

“Nooooo, not in the least!” They explained that they never even thought about it till I’ve brought it up. Tony did however consider the suggestion quite strongly as he has over 50years of experience in music and does see a future for them as a band.

Do you write your own lyrics?

Clifford and Johan writes the original music.

Is there any tension in the band?

As they explained they all work together very well. They have their running jokes in the band but it never gets too nasty.

Moving on to specifically the Richmond Hill festival, how are you guys experiencing support from the organizers and public?

“The Alliance France has been very professional...” Barry explained that they replied and informed them very well throughout the process.

Withond

Dirk Moggee (‘91) was born in Port Elizabeth, South Africa and has been interested in visual arts from a very young age. In 2010 he enrolled to the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in Port Elizabeth

and obtained his National Diploma in Photography.
