History

The site has been the official residence of queens and

kings from William the Conqueror to the present

day. Royals have been born, married and buried inthe castle. Windsor castle was built as a wooden fort

in the 11the century. In 1992, over 110 rooms in the

palace were damaged or destroyed in a fire.

King Henry VIII Gate

The King Henry VIIIGate is the main gateof the castle. It was

built in 1511. Itsdecorated with HenryVIIIs symbols theTudor rose andpomegranate emblemof his first wife,Catherine Aragon.

State Apartments

The State Apartments are one of the impressive arts of theCastle. They contain old master paintings and sculptures. TheCrimson Drawing Room was severely damaged in the 1992 fire

when the ceiling collapsed and the walls were badly burnt. Thesteel roof structure expanded in the intense heat and pushed out

the eastern wall overlooking the garden, threatening the entirefaade with collapse.

Queen Marys Dolls House

There is also the Queen Marys Dolls house. You

can find everything in this housefrom tiny crown

jewels in their own locked room to a small garage

with a small Rolls Royce in it.
