Windsor Girls’ School 14 December 2018 Windsor Castle Christmas Performances Over the last few years we have been very fortunate to develop a close relationship with Windsor Castle. The relationship has afforded our students some wonderful opportunities such as playing for the Queen, the Duke of Edinburgh and other members of the Royal family. This Christmas has been no exception, with students from both Windsor Girls’ and Boys’ performing in the State Apartments during the recent ‘Princess and the Pantomime’. The performance was a tribute to the pantomimes performed by Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret during the Second World War, when they were evacuated to Windsor Castle. Members of the public and the Royal Household enjoyed our students’ musical performances as well as watching the wonderful performance of ‘Aladdin’. Students have also been busy carol singing and performing in Windsor town centre. We are really proud of their contributions to the school and the wider community, they are a credit to the school.

Dear Parents and Carers There have been a number of activities taking place this week. Year 11 were pleased to have finished their Internal Examinations and to submit their applications for the Sixth Form. We will be sharing their results with them at the end of our first week back. Interviews for the Sixth Form will take place in Term 3. We were pleased to dispatch our final UCAS applications this week, and it is pleasing to see that so many students are holding offers from their chosen universities. For students still waiting to hear back from universities, we hope you hear soon, but remember, some universities will wait until the final deadline of 15 January before making any offers. On Wednesday this week, we had a whole school Christmas lunch. This was very popular with students and staff who enjoyed a full turkey or vegetarian Christmas dinner, and a dessert of chocolate mousse, brownies and mince pies. Tables were set with table cloths and crackers, and Christmas music in the background made for a great atmosphere. This has quickly become a new Windsor Girls’ School tradition. Our annual Carol Concert takes place on Tuesday next week, at Holy Trinity, Garrison Church in Windsor. This whole school event is always a wonderful way to end the term and you will find more information later on in this newsletter. The students involved in the choir and band have had so many commitments over the last few weeks and will also be performing at the Windsor Boys’ School Carol Concert on Wednesday. They have done a great job. We will end Term 2 on Wednesday, 19 December, with students and staff wearing Christmas jumpers for charity, the newly formed staff band performing at break one, and the staff pantomime, before the early finish at 12:45pm. Festive Music

Just a few photographs of our musical students out and about this

Christmas season. As you may recognise, they have been performing in

Windsor Castle, Centrica, Daniels and for local MP Adam Afriyie. We

look forward to next week’s Carol Service where they will be showcasing

their talents further.

Interact Tombola

Today, Interact had their second ever fundraising event! To celebrate the Christmas season, Interact organised a festive Tombola and we managed to fundraise over £250! There were various exciting prizes ranging from a £30 Daniels voucher, a Nando’s voucher and a Creams voucher, to

bath bombs and chocolate! All donations are being equally divided between our two chosen charities: Electric Eels and MemaTanzania. MemaTanzania is an organisation providing girls in rural Tanzania with both an education and reusable sanitary products. They are paving the way to ending period poverty sustainably. Electric Eels is a local swimming group, based at Windsor Leisure Centre, which provides a safe and friendly environment for young people, over the age of 8, with Down syndrome, to swim either as a beginner or competitively. Both our charities are attempting to make a permanent, positive change and your donations today hopefully not only provided you with an exciting prize but also the comfort of knowing you’re helping make this change. I just want to personally thank everyone who helped or contributed today as I know this could never

have happened without you! Interact looks forward to continuing this fundraising success in the new year. Have a lovely Christmas holiday! - Aliya Prichard-Casey - President of Interact, Year 12

On Wednesday, Aspriring High met for a talk from Paul Butler, a lecturer at Brunel University. He talked to us about his time working for Sky as a motion designer, and the different careers available within this industry. As part of the session, we designed either an advert for Sky's new Bond channel or a title sequence for the X Factor. After this, we had to present back to the group. The meeting was interesting and interactive, and gave me a lot of information about a growing industry I knew very little about. - Anna Foskett, Year 12

Aspiring High Dr Haynes, Miss Pearce and myself were incredibly proud of our Aspiring High students on Wednesday evening - engaged, alert, full of exciting ideas, they listened carefully to the brief set and fulfilled it incredibly well - every single group. The quality of the presentations was high, and students are showing how quickly they are learning how to present their ideas and engage with their audience. We were especially glad that so many Year 11s in attendance, in spite of their internal examinations, showing excellent time management skills. Well done to everyone! We look forward to our first session back on 14 January, which is looking at what students can do now to give themselves the best chance to access the top universities. - Mrs Jenkins

Big Questions

Yet again, we broke our records for attendance for our Christmas debate – ‘What do we most hope for at Christmas?’ Some of our hopes were really deeply thought through and, for me, were quite moving. Pete Mathew, from Windsor Fellowship Church, sold his concept of hope in the meaning of the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus, reminding us of the original meaning of Christmas. We hope that all our students will have a very happy Christmas, with peace, relaxation and enjoyable times with family and happy family reunions. - Mrs Jenkins

Students participated in the “electrifying” edition of the Science Club this week. The programme included all things Christmas and we started with a challenge when the students were to light a Christmas LED using just a piece of paper, soft pencil and a battery! The students all took on the challenge and not only manged to light up the room with colourful LEDs, but also proved to have a lot of imagination trying to design different versions of the experiment! This week we also had Mr Stevenson (Computer Science) kindly join us to showcase the BBC micro:bit - a tiny programmable

computer, designed to make learning and teaching easy and fun! The Club had a lovely atmosphere and plenty of famous Christmas tunes. We look forward to new editions of the Science Club next term. - Ms Zarzecka

The Baby Bank Windsor Appeal

Thank you for all the wonderful donations for this year’s Christmas charity appeal. Local charity, The Baby Bank, supports local families and children by putting together packs of clothing and other useful items and gifts. The charity were delighted with our donations when they collected them this week. The Student Leaders have done a great job in promoting the appeal in school and were on hand to pack the items ready for them to distributed to those in need this Christmas.

Lost Property We currently have a number of items in Lost Property which are not named. We endeavour to return all named items to students. Please ensure that all uniform and PE items are named.
