Dear Parents and Carers The penultimate week of term has been full of activities, events and opportunities for our students. At the start of the week, a group of Year 9 students took part in a vocational based taster day at Langley College. The day aimed to provide students with information about future choices and areas which are not currently offered at school. Students were able to see the different departments such as Motor Vehicle, Hair and Beauty and Childcare. Also this week, 24 students from Years 9 and 10 participated in the district sports event at TVAC. Students represented the school very well and are showing that they can compete at the highest level. There is further information on the later pages of this newsletter. On Tuesday evening, Year 11 celebrated the end of their examinations with their prom at Windsor Racecourse. Students enjoyed getting dressed up and they looked great. We look forward to welcoming them to Year 12 in September. Year 12 took part in a session on democracy and voter registration this week. The interactive session was delivered by the Electoral Services Team, who were impressed by the students’ knowledge and contributions. Also this week, some of our new Student Leaders attended a leadership conference at Sir William Borlase’s Grammar School in Marlow. They returned full of ideas and were inspired to launch some new ideas in September. Year 12 historians visited the National Archives in Kew to develop their historical investigation skills. They were able to access primary documents including criminal records of famous Suffragettes such as Emily Davidson and Emmeline Pankhurst. Students who are going on the Costa Rica trip, in July 2019, had the opportunity to bond with each other when they had a team building session and a game of rounders after school on Wednesday. Students will be involved in many aspects of the trip and are required to work together to plan and fundraise. The Interact Club were also busy fundraising on Wednesday, at break time, with a mini fair. Students were able to take part in a range of activities and games, as well as guessing the teachers’ baby photos. The Duke of Edinburgh Award continues to be a real strength of our extra-curricular offer. Six students completed their Gold expedition in the Brecon Beacons this week, and a further 95 Bronze Award participants will be undertaking their final expedition over the next week. Good luck to all students and staff involved. Mrs G. Labrum

National Archives, Kew

Year 12 historians took part in an interactive session at the National Archives, Kew this week. The session allowed students to handle primary documents and see history at first hand. The sessions were designed to refine historical enquiry skills ahead of the students undertaking coursework in Year 13. Students were especially fascinated by the documents based on women's suffrage; in particular documents on Emily Wilding Davison, the lady who threw herself in front of the King's horse at the Derby in 1913. Students discovered that, unlike previous historical interpretations of the event, Davison was intending to become a martyr to the suffrage movement and that she had made numerous attempts to do so. Students also focused on their individual research and could request to see files, documents and photographs which have previously been 'locked' for 30 or even 70 years for security reasons.

National Students’ Art Exhibition

Windsor Girls’ School is delighted to announce that a number of Year 11 Art students have had pieces selected for exhibition at The Dover Federation for the Arts Multi Academy Trust’s National

Students’ Art Exhibition, at The Mall Galleries, London, from 18 to 21 July. The exhibition opening is on Wednesday, 18 July, at 3:00pm, and entry to the exhibition is free. The standard of submissions was, according to the organisers, extraordinarily high, so many congratulations to Ffion Jones, who has had three pieces selected, ‘Pride’, ‘BTS’ and ‘David Bowie’. Also selected for exhibition are Aliya Pirchard-Casey’s piece, ‘Marine Pollution’ and Imogen Waller’s ‘Trio’. Ellen Donaldson’s piece, ‘Ellen’ has been highly commended by the judging panel. Please visit https://nsae.co.uk/ for further information.

Interact Club Investiture

On Monday, 9 July, Windsor Girls’ School played host to His Worship the Mayor of the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead, Councillor Paul Lion. Accompanied by Madam Mayoress, as well as esteemed guests from the Windsor St George and Windsor and Eton Rotary Clubs, they gathered at the school for the investiture ceremony of the 2017-2018 Interact Club. Attended by members of staff, parents and pupils, the ceremony was a fine exhibition of the work, dedication and pageantry befitting the efforts of this year's cohort of Interactors. Board of Directors members Grace Asquith-Evans, Navleen Bhachu, Isabelle Jackson-Brench, and Ishika Sabharwal were awarded their chains of office and were received formally into the Rotary Family.

Interact Mini-Fair

On Wednesday, 11 July, the Interact Club of Windsor Girls’ School staged their final fundraising event for their chosen charities, Girls Not Brides and the Windsor CFR. Holding a mini-fair outside, there were henna tattoos, a sweet throw, donuts, drinks, and ice-lollies all for sale, and a Guess The Teacher and Guess The Sweets! Interact would like to thank all staff and pupils for their support this year with their charities.

Year 11 Prom

Year 11 celebrated the end of their examinations on Tuesday evening, with their Prom, held at Windsor Racecourse. The students looked fantastic in their finery. We look forward to welcoming them into Year 12 in September.

Costa Rica Trip

On Monday, 9 July, the Year 9 and 10 athletics team took part in the district championships, we had a very strong team and did brilliantly. The day started with the 80m hurdles where Emily Helsby competed and came second in her race, next it was the 100m where we had both Abbie Jackson-Brench and Lucy Scott competing and who both performed fantastically, both qualifying for the final. After this was Caitlin Wollaston in the 200m, who put in a great effort, leading to the last of the sprints which was the 300m. In this race, Natasha Goldsworthy and Emily Helsby both ran in separate races and both managed to place in the top three. We then moved on to the two middle distance events starting with the 800m, where Lily Rolfe and Amy Kemp should both be very proud of their times, they ran like the wind. And lastly, the 1500m, in which Lily Rolfe (again!) and Ava Hewitt made the team proud and obtained wonderful times. In the field events, Amy Kemp wowed us with her long jump, while Lilybeth Ihezue obliterated her competition in the shot putt. Emily Helsby and Lucy Scott finished their high jump with high spirits and Lily Rolfe and Ava Hewitt should be elated with the great distances they achieved. Finally, the day ended with the relay which we won by miles due to our incredible team (Natasha Goldsworthy, Lilybeth Ihezue, Abbie Jackson-Brench and Caitlin Wollaston). Overall, our Year 9 team came third, and our Year 10 team came second. Thank you to all the PE teachers for taking us and all of the athletes who should all be really proud! What a great day! By Emily Helsby Year 10 Athletics Captain

PE News

Wednesday evening saw a team building session for the students who will be travelling to Costa Rica in July 2019. The students, who will be working together on projects and fundraising, enjoyed some friendly rivalry with a game of rounders.
