Sixth Form History Trip History students from Years 12 and 13 travelled to Washington DC and New York between 13 and 19 February. The trip was focused on two units of the A level history course and was packed with opportunities to develop learning outside of the classroom. Starting in Washington, students visited the National Museum of American History where one of the original American flags is housed as well as a huge collection of items related to American presidents and popular culture. They also visited the incredible National Museum of African American History, which we all agree is an incredible

Dear Parents and Carers We hope you had a good break and have been enjoying the recent good weather. Our first week back has been a busy one and there has been a lot for our students to be involved with. Year 13 have been sitting internal examinations, which will help in their preparations for the real thing in the summer. Year 11 have also been working on their practical assessments in Catering and Food Technology and, next week, students will be sitting GCSE internal examinations as the final examinations move closer. Preparations for upcoming music concerts are continuing, as are plans for the Young Journalist competition and the Mock Trial. There has been a focus on Science this week and assemblies have recognised the importance of STEM based subjects during Science Week. There have also been a number of opportunities related to careers education this week. On Wednesday, we welcomed a representative from Legoland to speak to students about seasonal and permanent roles available as part of the Merlin Group. On Thursday, students attended the Heathrow Careers Fair where they met with over 60 employers and companies. Students were able to gather information on training routes, apprenticeships and career pathways. A number of students found the visit very helpful and have been able to refine their choices for the future. Finally, Year 12 attended the Higher Education Conference, at the Emirates Stadium in London, to begin to think about their next steps beyond school. Exhibitors included a wide range of universities, employers and apprenticeship providers who were able to answer student questions and share key information. Next week, Year 9 will have the opportunity to try out a range of GCSE subjects as part of their taster day. This is a really good way for them to see what a subject entails and whether it is a subject that they want to study for the next two years. Following the taster sessions, we look forward to welcoming Year 9 parents to Subject Evening on Thursday, 7 March, between 4:00pm and 7:00pm. We will also be marking World Book Day, National Careers Week and International Women’s Day which we are sure students will find interesting. Mr P Griffiths and Mrs E O’Carroll Co-Headteachers

Year Information
Year 9 Students will be taking part in GCSE taster sessions on Tuesday, 5 March, during periods one and two. Students have already chosen the sessions they wish to attend. Subject Evening takes place on Thursday, 7 March, between 4:00pm and 7:00pm. Students have been given appointment sheets and have been asked to make appointments with their individual teachers. Planning and preparations are still ongoing for the Mock Trial competition. Students are advised to check for timings of the sessions. Year 10 Students who are completing their Bronze Award are encouraged to finalise volunteering aspects and should be starting to complete their hours. Year 11 The Silver Duke of Edinburgh practice expedition takes place from 15 to 17 March. Students should be in the process of planning their routes and equipment. Year 11 will be taking part in career insight sessions with visiting employers on Friday, 8 March. Following their one to one careers interviews, students indicated the sectors they are most interested in. Students will attend sessions led by key professionals from that area and the students will be able to ask specific questions in small group settings to learn more about different roles available.
Next week marks a number of national and international events. We will be welcoming author, Julia Golding, to school on Monday, 4 March, to share information on her writing as part of World Book Day. We will also be recognising National Careers Week and International Women’s Day across the week.
SIXTH FORM
Students who are interested in undertaking their Gold Award should see Miss Castle as soon as possible. University applicants are encouraged to finalise their firm and insurance choices as soon as they are able. This will allow students to organise accommodation at their chosen establishment. In addition, students and parents are advised to apply for student finance at this point. Any changes to the course or university can be amended at a later point. The link to register can be found here: https://www.gov.uk/student-finance-register-login.
museum. With three floors below ground level, the museum is skilfully designed to take visitors on a journey from the foundations of the United States to the present day. It was fully interactive and students found the exhibits informative and fascinating. Elsewhere in Washington, students visited the National Archives and the major landmarks of the city.
Whilst visiting the Lincoln Memorial, where Martin Luther King made his famous ‘I have a dream speech’, we stumbled on the film set of ‘A Handmaid’s Tale’. Students were delighted to meet some of the cast and watch as key scenes were shot. We then transferred to New York where we explored Time Square, watched Chicago on Broadway, sailed to see the Statue of Liberty and the Ellis Island Museum and the 9/11 Memorial. There was also time to attend a talk with Civil Rights activist, Mark Levy, go up the Empire State Building and walk around Central Park.
This was a packed trip with some fantastic opportunities to see the things we study at first hand. Our students were a credit to the school and everywhere we visited fellow tourists and staff commented on their conduct and manners. It was a pleasure to show them around two very different and vibrant cities and they are sure to have made memories to last a lifetime.
Sixth Form History Trip
Jodie Smith
Jodie Smith (Year 12) competed in several events at the u20 indoor athletics nationals last weekend, performing well in each. In the Long Jump, Jodie jumped a new personal best of 5.67m and came seventh; this places her eighth in the country. In High Jump, Jodie again jumped a new personal best, 1.77m, and came second on count back; this puts her joint first in the country for High Jump. Finally, she ran the 60m Hurdles and equalled her personal best, coming ninth overall. Jodie’s second place in the High Jump has led to her being selected to represent England as a u20 for a meeting in Cardiff this weekend. Good luck Jodie!

Bronze D of E 2019 - Trangia Training Sessions There will be 4 repeat sessions between 3:15-4:15pm in L29 on the following dates:
Thursday 14 March
Thursday 21 March
Wednesday 3 April In order to take part in the expedition you must attend only one of these sessions. Due to large numbers of students, each session will be restricted 25 students for Health & Safety purposes. During these sessions you will work in groups of 3/4 to prepare a full meal similar to what you would eat for your evening meal on expedition e.g., pasta and sauce (do not bring pot noodles). Prior to the session, please plan what food you would like to prepare with your group and organise who will be responsible for bringing various things. It is essential to plan as a group and share responsibility. Please note, the group you work with for this training session does not have to be your actual D of E expedition group. Just like on your expedition, we will provide each group with the trangia and gas. I will not be able to provide any of the below items. You will need to bring the following to the training session:
ALL food items
wooden cooking utensils such as spatula/spoon
plates/bowls
cutlery
matches (preferably the extra long ones)
washing up liquid
dish cloth/sponge
tea towel
you may wish to bring a cup and some instant hot chocolate for an extra tasty treat. You will have a separate session on meal planning and nutrition but for these sessions I ask that you bring simple and quick ingredients such as quick cook pasta and sauces due to time restrictions. If you have any questions then please do not hesitate to ask! - Miss Edwards.
