Sounds are built into syllables and syllables are combined to form words. You must see and hear words in parts.

Syllables• Review: There are six types of syllables

• One type is called a Closed syllable

• All the words we have worked with so far have been Closed syllables

• The vowel is short

• It is “Closed in” on the right side by one or more consonants

Practice multisyllabic words with the syllable

The letters l, s, and f, do not double in

multisyllabic words. The bonus letter

applies to one syllable words.

Compound words with ll, ss, and ff,

will remain doubled.

When an ‘s’ is added to a multisyllabic

baseword, spell the baseword one

syllable at a time and then add the ‘s’

Multisyllabic words ending in /ik/ are spelled

with an ic
