Dear families and friends,

What an amazing, wonderful, superdooper, thoughtful, caring, inclusive, respectful, well behaved….….school we are! Last Friday our whole school excursion proved beyond a shadow of a doubt that our children do listen, can follow instructions and are a credit to us all. If they’re not listening at home just let me know and we could have a whole school meeting about it!! It was wonderful to be out in the real world and enjoy a day together, making wonderful memories. Children participated in the excursion with a good heart and open mind. On the walk/train back everyone had a story to tell me about their favourite character, which song they liked or surprisingly that they’d never wanted to see The Little Mermaid but loved it! Staff and children mixed seamlessly and showed great audience skills. The House Captains and all Year Fours and Fives were brilliant role models for the younger children. Feedback from the public was complimentary and positive – always heartening to hear good news! What a great way to celebrate Catholic Education Week, being involved in something that was both educational and entertaining and we made happy memories at the same time, which increases our sense of belonging and wellbeing.

Our children’s safety matters Earlier this year one of our Year Five students, Elsha raised a concern with me. She and many other children walk through the tunnel under the South Road bridge each day as their parents park on the eastern side of the bridge. Her issue was that cars often ignore the walk crossing and go straight through the lights. Thank goodness children and families are vigilant and wait until cars have come to a complete halt before walking onto the road. As a young person wanting to make a difference Elsha wrote to Michael Deegan, Chief Executive of the Commission for Highways and Railways. He wrote back and arranged a time to meet with Elsha, her parents and myself. It was a fruitful meeting and some effective improvements are being considered and will be made over time. One simple step we can take as a school is to issue anyone crossing that road with a High Viz Vest. Michael had his on and it made such a difference to drivers reactions and awareness. If you do use that tunnel please let Mary know and we will arrange to supply you with a vest. As a school we are also now looking at how we can highlight that there is a school present and children are close by. We are having new signage made and the advice from the experts is that the background needs to be white as it stands out and is eye catching. The aim is to have that installed within the month. I’ll keep you informed of updates

Health and Wellbeing Health and wellbeing are terms we hear a lot about today but who is responsible to it? Governments write policies and fund initiatives, work sites implement procedures and families teach social skills. I know family commitment to their child’s wellbeing is high but raising children has many levels of complexity. The partnership between home and school is so important and as the saying goes, it takes a village to raise a child. We are happy and proud to support you in educating your child. A simple thing like sleep can have a deep impact on a person, this of course translated into how they function, treat others and live in their world. Don’t worry, I don’t believe everything a child tells me, they do tell some great stories about when they go to bed!! For a child to function effectively during the school day they need to have a good solid sleep, it’s not easy getting kids to bed sometimes so if you need some support don’t hesitate to call on me or the teachers, we can have a whole class or school discussion about it!! Did you know… It is recommended for 3-5 year olds to have 11-14 hours’ sleep? It is recommended for 6-14 year olds to have 9-11 hours’ sleep? Light emissions from screens (TV, iPads etc) disrupt our normal brain rhythm, melatonin is hindered by the blue light? There is research that suggest electronic devices are causing irreparable delays in children’s sleep routines? In particular if they are in bedrooms. Screen consumption has our brains so wired that it is becoming increasingly more difficult to unwind? I raise this merely as food for thought. We may have all types of incredible technology on hand but intrinsically God gave us all we need, a brain and a heart. I’ll leave you to think about that. Thank you…. To the parents who willingly moved their cars to make way for elderly parishioners in the car park. To all the staff for taking 130+ children out for the day. To students for fabulous behavior and engagement on our whole school excursion. Front Office staff, the way you interact with children, staff and families is exceptional and truly appreciated. To Hollie and the OSHC educators for repurposing and recycling furniture to make a mud kitchen (very creative!). To the Social Justice leaders for making and providing soup to the Soup Kitchen with the help of Robyn Mercer, Robyn Grave and Kate White. To the parents who helped prepare and hand out the Pizza Lunch Fete Fundraiser orders during the week. Members of the Finance and Board Committees who share their skills and knowledge and show their support of school policies and procedures. Keep smiling, Tess

Religious Identity And Mission

‘I am with you always…til the end of time’ In the Bible, Matthew’s gospel concludes with these words from Jesus…after he instructs his disciples to continue his work. This Sunday the Christian Church celebrates the Feast of the Ascension. The Ascension celebrates that Jesus, having completed God’s mission, returns to God. Jesus has ‘gone home’. The Ascension is a time to remember that Jesus invites us to continue God’s mission and we have the promise that his ‘Holy Spirit’ will be with us in this work. Somehow he was still with them….somehow he is still with us!

Mary….woman of love, woman of faith, woman of hope This week (Wed May 24th) the Catholic Church in Australia celebrated the Feast of Our Lady of the Southern Cross, Help of Christians. Catholics have a special place in their prayers and hearts for Mary, the Mother of Jesus. We can learn from her! She can teach us and help us! Pope Francis (a thoroughly modern Pope!) tweeted this week….

“Mary teaches us to place our hope in God even when all seems without meaning, even when God seems hidden”

This painting was done by Australian

artist Paul Newman in 2008…can you

notice how the artist has placed Mary

in an Australian setting. She was a Jewish girl

who lived in 1st century Palestine and yet

2,000 years later, in our time and place,

she has much to teach Australians about

faith, love and hope.

Project Compassion

As a Catholic school we are committed to the principles of Catholic Social Teaching – the first of which is a ‘preferential option for the poor’. Our community has made a great effort again this year in supporting people who live in communities that need help. Thank you to those families who have returned their Project Compassion boxes to school before Easter. We will continue to raise money for Project Compassion throughout the year….so if you’re Project Compassion box is still sitting on your kitchen bench (or in your child’s bedroom!)… we would really appreciated it if these were returned to school.

Students teaching students!

Last Thursday as part of our Catholic Education Week celebrations four Yr 12 students from Sacred Heart College spoke to all classes about their recent Immersion Trip to the Philippines. We were impressed by both the quality of their presentation to our younger students and also their obvious passion for social justice. Students from St Anthony’s were very engaged in listening to the older students experiences of living with and getting to know people who live in a very poor part of our world. The younger children had some great ‘wondering’ questions and were respectful, active listeners for our visitors. I overheard one Yr 5 student say ‘When I am in high school I want to do something like that. I want to help people. It makes you feel grateful for what you have?’ Many of us, young and not so young, were inspired by this brief but meaningful encounter with students from one of our neighbouring Catholic schools

Soup-Makers

Led by our Social Justice Leaders an enthusiastic group of children are helping to make soup every week for the Moore St Day Centre. This organisation is currently feeding and caring for 70 homeless people every night. Many thanks to Robyn Grave who delivers the soup to Moore St for us each week.

Celebrating the Sacrament of Reconciliation

A number of students are currently preparing, with their families to become

fully-initiated members of the Catholic Church through the sacraments of First Communion and Confirmation. As part of that preparation some of them recently celebrated the Sacrament of Reconciliation – this sacrament offers us the opportunity to experience God’s great mercy…knowing that when we make mistakes we can always turn to God and begin again.

Sacrament Preparation is family-centred, parish-based and school supported. If you are interested in Sacrament preparation for your child please contact Fr Phillip - Edwardstown Parish, myself, or the Parish to which you belong.

P&F Happenings

Page 7 St Anthony’s School

Hello Everyone, It's a busy time of year for the P&F! Our Ladies Movie Night is on this Sunday (28th) night at 6pm. It is not too late to buy your tickets - the trybooking site is still open (www.trybooking.com/277956), and you can buy tickets on the night if you need to. I saw Goldie Hawn and Amy Schumer on The Graham Norton Show and they were hilarious together, so the movie, Snatched promises to be a cracker! We'll have our Eb & Ive clothing and jewellery stall there so you can pick up some excellent bargains ($10 necklaces, $5 earrings, $40 knits), and you can enjoy a glass or 2 of pre-movie champagne. All whilst you get out of the usual monotonous Sunday evening pre-school week routine! Hope to see you at Wallis Cinema Mitcham at 6pm on Sunday. Entertainment Books are out - we hope you enjoy all the great deals available in the Book. Please return your payment (or book if you don't want to keep it) ASAP. Peoples Choice Raffle Books are ready to go out. For the 75 lucky families who will be allocated a book, please look out for it in your child's bag so we can get them sold and back to school quickly too. Again if you are not able to sell tickets, that is completely fine, but please return the book to school so we can reallocate it. As you will probably know our school benefits from this fundraiser immensely as 100% of the ticket cost is reimbursed back to the school. It has been a pretty easy and quite lucrative fundraiser for us over the years and your support is always appreciated. Our Fabulous Fete preparations are well and truly underway! The kids Pizza lunch this week was again a great success, and we thank the Fete Committee for taking on the organisation of that fundraiser. My kids are absolutely loving it, and it has been a great way to 'encourage' (read: bribe!) them to behave well this last week! Hannah Krause and I set up an Eb & Ive stall at the Edwardstown Footy Club Ladies night last Saturday night. We both had a fun night, and I particularly realised how un-shop fit i am - I was exhausted and my feet hurt so much! However, we raised about $900 for our efforts and both lost our voices in the process!!!! Our next P&F Meeting will be on Monday 5th June at 9.30am in the Resource Centre (after the Pentecost Liturgy). We trialled this meeting time last term and have decided to continue with it as we hope that it gives those parents who cannot attend the evening meeting the opportunity to attend. We'll have good coffee and yummy snacks if that makes your decision to attend easier!!! To finish I just want to thank all parents and friends who help and contribute to activities around the school. A lot of your efforts are quite visible, but others go under the radar. In any community or group, people play different roles and each role is valuable and contributes to its success. It is important to have leaders and ideas people, but if the group consisted of only those people and no 'doers' then nothing would get done. I also acknowledge that we all have a number of 'balls' in the air - we all have young children (obviously!), some of us also have babies, some of us are working outside of the home, some of us are single parent families, some of us are caring for older parents/ relatives, some of us are grieving loved ones, some of us are involved in other community groups, some of us are just weighted down with the day to day grind of parenting, and the list could go on. We might have lots of energy/ space for 'extra' activities at some times during the year and no energy for them at other times. I think it is quite obvious to anyone who knows me that I struggle to keep all the balls in the air everyday, and a lot of those days the balls are falling down around me. The P&F is supposed to be inclusive to all parents, and by its very nature all parents and carers of children who are enrolled at our school are members. I hope that you feel welcome to join in activities as much or as little as you can, and know that we are grateful for all contribution: big, small, medium. See you around the playground, Letitia Waite P&F co-Chairperson
