Whoever drinks the water I give

will never thirst

Living water. At the encounter by Jacob’s well, Jesus revealed himself to the Samari-

tan woman as the living water that will quench her thirst forever. The Samaritan

woman pleaded to him: sir, give me that living water. In their encounter, the Samaritan

woman discovered the Messiah, the living water that gives eternal life.

The image is living water, a running water that gushes forth from the source and swells

up to streams and rivers and empties to the ocean. That is the life that Jesus gives:

living, vibrant, always fresh and new!

Jesus invites us to the living water. As the Samaritan woman saw that Jesus was the

Messiah, she immediately loosened up, opened herself to be guided and was willing to

be renewed. She even did more than that as she gladly announced to her village that

she found the Messiah.

See the correlation between a hardened heart and the absence of Jesus? Without Jesus, there is no life;

the heart is dry and hard and close. Only the water that quenches the thirst forever softens a hardened heart.

Like the Samaritan woman, we are in need of the living water that quenches our thirst for the Living

God. How difficult the search can be; along the search, many disordered thirsts get in the way. Instead of find-

ing the Living God, we quench the thirst of our flesh, thus we find the water to quench our thirst for fame,

riches and power. These things hinder us from reaching God not because they naturally are hindrances to our

search for God but because we have a disordered love for these goods. But Jesus comes to soften our already

hardened hearts caused by or disordered love for earthly goods. When Jesus comes to our lives, He will be

stirring our lives to the direction of the Father just like the way He guided the Samaritan woman to discover

the truth. When she made herself available to the truth, she quenched the thirst that she was forever enduring,

and then she did not hold back in sharing to others what she has found.

City states have developed where there is life: around a thriving water life where agriculture and trade

were possible. From it grew human communities and these human communities were sustained and were

spread to the wherever expansion may be built.

The same is true when we live fed by the nourishing love of God. If we drink from the living stream of

God’s truth, we become the human beings that we are ought to become: just, charitable and peace-loving

people. God sustains us and makes us communities far and wide.

As we grow and spread and fill the world, our call is to remain with God. It is this season of Lent that

we are called back to God, to remain with Him and to be sustained by Him always.

Scrutinies. These succeeding three Sundays of Lent, we will hold the scrutinies for our catechumens

and candidate. These scrutinies are post-catechesis period for our catechumens and candidate who are discern-

ing their total conversion for Christ. They are in this period where they journey with us in renewal. They make

their lives a fitting expression of God’s mercy and love and we, our example of Christian living, serve as their

model as we ourselves struggle in conversion.

May we pray for and journey with our catechumens and candidate as they prepare themselves to

receive Christ in baptism, confirmation and Eucharist.

Agua viva. En el encuentro por el pozo de Jacob, Jesús se reveló a la mujer samaritana como el agua viva que

saciará su sed para siempre. La mujer samaritana le suplicó: Señor, dame esa agua viva. En en encuentro, la

La imagen es el agua viva, una corriente de agua que brota de la fuente y se hincha hasta arroyos y ríos

y desemboca en el océano. Esa es la vida que nos da Jesús: viva, vibrante, siempre fresca y nueva!

Jesús nos invita al agua viva. Cuando la mujer samaritana vio que Jesús era el Mesías, ella inmediata-

mente dejo que su corazón se abriera para ser guiada y estaba dispuesta a ser renovada. Ella incluso hizo más

que eso fue alegremente a su aldea para anunciar que ella había encontrado al Mesías.

¿Vea la correlación entre un corazón endurecido y la ausencia de Jesús? Sin Jesús, no hay vida; El

corazón está seco,duro y cerrado. Sólo el agua que apaga la sed para siempre suaviza un corazón endurecido.

Como la mujer samaritana, necesitamos el agua viva que apaga nuestra sed del Dios Viviente. Cuán

difícil puede ser la búsqueda; A lo largo de la búsqueda, nos encontramos con mucha sed desordenados que se

interponen en el camino. En lugar de encontrar al Dios vivo, para apagar la sed de nuestra carne, encontramos

el agua para saciar nuestra sed de fama, riqueza y poder. Estas cosas nos impiden llegar a Dios, no porque

naturalmente son obstáculos para nuestra búsqueda de Dios, sino porque tenemos un amor desordenado por

estos bienes. Pero Jesús viene a suavizar nuestros corazones ya endurecidos causados por un desordenado

amor por los bienes terrenales. Cuando Jesús venga a nuestras vidas, Él estará moviendo nuestras vidas a la

dirección del Padre como la manera en que Él guió a la mujer samaritana para que descubriera la verdad.

Él siempre.

con nosotros en renovación. Ellos hacen de su vida una expresión adecuada de la misericordia y amor de Dios

y nosotros, con nuestro ejemplo de vida cristiana, servimos como su modelo como nosotros mismos luchamos

We have a very busy April coming up, and we want everyone to be on the same page.

Little Suppers & Stations of the Cross

Please join us Fridays during Lent for a light supper at 6pm followed by the Stations of the Cross at 7pm. These will be hosted by the Knights of Columbus (3/3 & 10), the parish (3/17), the Catholic Daughters of America (3/24)and the Hispanic Ministry (3/31 & 4/7). If you would like to do the Stations between 9am-4pm on Fridays, you are welcome to enter through the chapel door. There will be booklets you can borrow to guide you around the Stations. Please return the book-let as you leave so the next person can use it. There will be a few copies so more than one person can go around at the same time, but all at their own pace.

Extended Confession Schedule Tuesday - Friday

9am - 4pm

During Lent, we are offering an extended schedule for confessions. Just like Wednesdays during regular times, the chapel door will be open for you to come in. Look for the sign over the phone on the counter to the right. It will either direct you to: * call the office, if no priest is already there. You will then pick up the phone which connects you directly to the office. Tell them you are asking for confession and then have a seat. We will send a priest over as soon as possible.

Or * to have a seat and wait if the priest is already there. When the priest is done with whomever was there ahead of you, he will come back through the chapel entry to see if anyone else is waiting. You will then follow him into the confessional. There will be confession guidelines available in the chapel area for your use.

New Time! Men’s Prayer Group

St. Mary’s Parish Men - There is a place for you on Saturday mornings 8:30 to about 9:30am in the St. Maximilian Kolbe Room (door just off the play ground and parking lot). We read in Lectio Divina of the Gospel readings for the coming Sunday and discuss. All men are welcome.

return it at Easter. You may also make a Rice Bowl donation with cash or check

Prayer Group

St Mary’s Women’s Prayer Group invites you to join us as we travel the Road to Emmaus and there encoun-ter Jesus who invites us to a deeper relationship with Him. This five week, small group session will focus on what it is to become a joyful disciple and missionary of Jesus Christ. The sessions began Wednes-day, March 8, @ 6:30 pm and continue weekly through April 3rd. They take place in the St. John XXIII room, upstairs straight across from the stairwell. Saying the Rosary

We recite the rosary in the chapel every morning before daily mass except on Wednesday

when we do it after mass. The rosary begins at 8:00 am and the daily mass at 8:30.

We also recite the Chaplet of Divine Mercy after every daily mass. All are welcome.

EASTER Candy for the Egg Hunt

It’s almost time for the Easter Egg Hunt! If you are able to donate small unopened store-bought wrapped candies, we would greatly appreciate it. Bring them to the office T-F 9am-Noon or 1-4pm, OR bring them to mass and put them in the box in the foyer with the bunny on it. Thank you!

Portrait of Santos Fernando Sánchez García, 22, a member of the Youths Builders “Jóvenes

Constructores” program supported by Catholic Relief Services in El Salvador. He started selling

in the streets at the age of 9 and continues to do so inside buses in San Salvador. Santos feels

the program will change his life and help him be a better salesman. He is a father of two

daughters and lives in an apartment building that was abandoned after an earthquake.

St Edward Catholic Church in Lebanon is having their 3rd annual Italian Dinner & Auction on Saturday, April 22nd at 6:15 pm, following the 5:15 Mass. Red Cross - March Blood Drive We had a goal of 35 pints and achieved 38. The Red Cross would like to thank the donors. Despite all the advances in modern medicine, without life-giving

blood many people would not survive. We also extend our thanks to the volunteers who assisted with the drive. You are truly appreciated.

THIRSTING FOR LIFE-GIVING WATERS

Especially during the Lenten, Holy Week, and Easter seasons, the prayer texts of the Eastern Church revel in paradoxical images of Christ: the eternal life who is put to death, the host of the supper who is also its meal, the thirsty crucified one with living water streaming from his side. These images flow from the evangelists’ portrayals of Jesus and from his very ministry, during which he often upset or reversed people’s expectations about him or the ways of God. This “reversal” is at play in today’s Gospel, as Jesus speaks to an enemy foreigner who is also a woman beneath his status. In addition he, the thirsting one, shows the woman to be the one truly thirsting. He—whose parched lips will say “I thirst” before he dies—is the source of life and life-giving water. Lent calls upon us to dwell on how each of us is thirsting for Christ, and it leads us, ultimately, back to the life-giving waters of our baptism into his Body. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

In recent years, there has been a resurgence of interest in various forms of adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Some people suggest that this recovers an ancient tradition in the church, when in fact the practice belongs to a later time. The custom of showing the consecrated host to the people, encased in a vessel called a monstrance, developed in a period of history when even very pious people received Communion only rarely. The opportunity to see the host raised high above the head of the priest at Mass, or to see the host exposed outside of Mass, was thought by many to be a form of spiritual Communion. Without question, our Catholic practice of reserving the consecrated host both for adoration and Communion of the sick and dying is a cherished tradition.

“Perpetual Adoration,” “Reservation,” “Benediction,” and “Reposition” are all part of the Catholic vocabulary. Often the terms are misused, and a tangled history—as well as widely varying practices in our parishes—adds to the confusion. Many Catholics today have never participat-ed in Benediction, or even spent time in adoration on Holy Thursday night. There’s plenty of interesting history, much of it surprising and challenging, and we will do our best to inform you along the way.

SEDIENTOS DE LAS AGUAS QUE DAN VIDA

Especialmente durante la Cuaresma, la Semana Santa y el tiempo de Pascua, los textos de oración de la Iglesia Occidental se deleitan con imágenes paradójicas de Cristo: la vida eterna que muere, el anfitrión de la cena que es también alimento, el crucificado sediento del que mana agua de vida de su costado. Estas imágenes fluyen de las representaciones de Jesús por parte de los evangelistas y de su mismísimo ministerio, durante el cual muchas veces cambió o invirtió las expectativas que las personas tenían sobre él o sobre los designios de Dios. Esta “inversión” está en juego en el Evangelio de hoy, cuando Jesús habla con una extranjera enemiga que está por debajo de su condición social. Además él, el que tiene sed, demuestra que la mujer es la única que tiene sed verdadera. Él –cuyos labios secos dirán “Tengo sed” antes de morir– es la fuente de vida y del agua que da vida. La Cuaresma nos llama a reflexionar sobre cómo cada uno de nosotros tiene sed de Cristo y nos lleva, en última instancia, de vuelta a las aguas dadoras de vida de nuestro bautismo en su Cuerpo. TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE

Luego de una larga peregrinación, una imagen de Cris-to llegó al pueblo de Esquipulas, Guatemala, el 9 de marzo de 1595. Dicha imagen negra de Cristo crucificado fue es-culpida por Quirio Cataño a pedido de los habitantes del pueblo recién evangelizado.

En 1595, la recién esculpida estatua de Cristo iba rum-bo a su destino, pero por cada pueblo que pasaba la gente pedía que lo dejaran una noche para que los fieles pudie-ran admirarla y rendirle culto a Cristo. Por tanto, la imagen tardó varios meses en llegar a su destino final.

Recientemente, una réplica del Cristo Negro de Esqui-pulas también tuvo problemas en llegar a su destino. Dicha copia, hecha en Guatemala para la comunidad guatemalte-ca de Los Ángeles, California, tuvo problemas al cruzar la frontera entre México y Estados Unidos, ya que las autori-dades de inmigración no permitieron pasarla por falta de documentos. Los fieles no tuvieron otra opción que pasar-la, a precio de “mordidas” y a escondidas, por lo cual se le llama el Cristo “Mojado” de Esquipulas. Did you know that God made you for a specific vocation? Part of growing into adulthood is to come to understand who we are as beloved sons and daughters of God. Called to Greatness is a discernment retreat for HS youth who are courageous enough to ask the question: Lord, how are you calling me to greatness? All four vocations the Church holds up for us will be explored: priesthood, married life, religious life and single life. Come and see how God is calling you!
