Working Group 3: Auto Drive

• Definition

– WG3 is responsible for the development of all map features which are needed to support

autonomous driving use cases.

• Goals

– Define and update map requirements for autonomous driving

– Develop proposals and change requests for NDS map format

• Tasks

– Provide high quality requirements and use cases to support autonomous driving

– Provide high quality documentation for all autonomous driving-related parts of NDS

– Drive integration of innovations from the autonomous driving domain

– Align with WG1 to make NDS format „autonomous driving capable“

NDS and timing estimates about the progress

• Some technicians estimate that already in 2020 we can see autonomous

series products driving on some highways. The extent of automation and

supervision is highly dependent on legal adaptations in the country.

• However, the dream to have the autonomous car without human control

on all roads by then is rather unrealistic. But: the topic will be driven with

high pressure from the car industry due to the expected and needed

business effect.

(e.g., 50 sensors like stereo-video cameras, radar devices, laser

scanners)

• Storing and sharing this information reveals forward-looking business

use cases for:

– even more convenient driving

– lowering energy consumption

– increasing safetey on the road

NDS, auto drive and metropolitan traffic management

Traffic in metropolitan cities like Beijing are frequently collapsing

– Space is limited / maximum amount of road surface reached

– Efforts to restrict number of cars have not been successful

– Drivers follow their individual road preferences which is harming

the traffic flow as a whole

Solution requested by traffic management organizations

– “Reduction” of the individual influence on the route selection

– Control the computer steered stream of cars on the roads as a whole

NDS in the context of involved parties

• The cooperation includes parties who decide on traffic laws and streets

regulations even in ethical context

• Others are insurances and those in charge of admission procedures.

• Besides, the new world BRAIN has a monetary relationship where the

ownership needs regulation, since connected cars in the internet

produce valuable mass data.

• Last not least the community has to protect personal data, which needs

to be solved appropriately.

NDS and the automotive BRAIN

• Maps were always of high importance influencing the world. However, the

map data was rather static and the processing simple.

• Today we see increasingly:

– Precise and up-to-date modelling of the real and dynamic world around the car

– The inclusion of a very high and still increasing number of sensors in the dynamic

processing of the data in the car

– The exchange of information with the road infrastructure and other road users

The connected network of dynamic information becomes an automotive

BRAIN - NDS can serve as the memory of this brain
