ESH COMPUTER CENTER • 717-442-1080 MARCH 2006 Whatever happened to the paperless office? We were supposed to be rid of paper by now, supposedly because we are all connected to the internet and can exchange all of our infor- mation electronically. Actually in many cases the reverse seems to have happened. Computers make it easier to create paperwork, and so we do. The fact is, we all like paper, and despite its drawbacks, it has some definite advantages over electronic documents. It is lighter than a laptop and easier to use than a hand-held computer. You do not have to boot it up to read it. Paper has no wires, mouse, power sup- ply, hard drive, or batteries that will need replaced over time. Information on paper does not vanish into the ether in the event of a hard drive crash. If all the infor- mation up until now would have only been available electronically, the advent of paper and printing would probably be hailed as the technologi- cal breakthrough of the century. The dominant printing technolo- gies in use today are inkjet and laser. Largely because of their relatively low up-front cost and their superb color printing capabilities, inkjet printers are very popular. Laser printers cost less to operate and print faster, but are generally more expensive to pur- chase. But, in spite of their relatively high printing costs, inkjets are largely the printers of choice for the home and small-office users. Some manufacturing companies do make a lot of money on ink cartridge sales, but it looks like we are starting to see the effects of some competition. People are realizing that there is more to an inkjet printer than its up-front cost. A $40.00 printer is not much of a bargain if you have to spend more than that amount on ink cartridges every few weeks. The good news is that change is in the wind. A recent review of inkjet photo printers by Tom's Hardware Guide included Hewlett Packard’s new Photosmart 8250. The Photosmart 8250 has 6 replaceable ink tanks. This printer's high-capacity black and five color cartridge tanks, allow you to print a combination of photos and documents and they are sold separately. This means that whenever you run low on ink, you can replace only the colors you need. The tests done by Tom's Hardware Guide show the following costs per page when comparing the 8250 with the more conventional 8050: Black and white text, A4* page size, 5% ink coverage: $0.02 vs. $0.06 Mixed text and graphics, A4* page size, 25% ink coverage: $0.09 vs. $0.26 4x6 photo: $0.34 vs. $0.65 Along with being touted as the world’s fastest photo printer, the HP 8250 also produces fade-resistant pho- tos that will last for generations. The HP Vivera Inks combined with HP Advanced Photo Paper also give a water and smudge-resistant photo. Of course all of this is good news for those who create family photo albums, or just want to print a photo for their desk that will not fade.
