Film distribution is the process of making a movie available for viewing by an audience.Distribution is usually carried out by a professional distribution company who would determine the marketing strategy for the film. The independent film company we have chosen is Island Pictures. We chose this company as its motto is ‘Island Pictures is a young, energetic and fabulous independent film and television production company’ and I believe this to fit our ambition as a film company due to the fact we are also young, energetic company. Island pictures have earlier this year proudly announced that their film ‘The Scapegoat’ will be shown on ITV and was thoroughly enjoyed by the vast audience. The scapegoat was successful in competition in Chicago film festival which was a great honour. We are aiming to follow in The Scapegoat’s footsteps and emulate its success.

The film we are producing is an independent film as an independent film is a professional film production that is produced mostly or completely outside of the major film studio system. The budget of an independent film is limited and mostly funded by their own income. Our film has no budget and is filmed with resources provided to us without any expenditure which fits the definition of an independent film.

My film will be self-distributed via online distribution and will be available for streaming on the internet. Online distribution is a form of new media. New media refers to on-demand access to content anytime, anywhere, on any digital device, as well as interactive user feedback, and creative participation. Online distribution can work more efficiently rather than having a DVD, the film is simply streamed or downloaded. This can include the ‘on-demand’ feature rather than allowing the customer to keep a physical copy permanently. Also, websites such as Netflix who actually have an independent film section which will specifically appeal to our film. Netflix is a hugely popular streaming website which has all the best films available to watch. Films such as 50/50 has gone onto be a successful film by going on to Netflix and this is what we aim to achieve.

Self-distribution has many benefits such as taking all the profit. Also if we were to put a price on the film and sell it we would have full choice on the price. We would receive instant profit due to having no delay from receiving revenue from the distributor. If the film was to be turned into a feature film, I would use pay Television Networks and Delivery services such as ‘On Demand’. Another technique I would use is going to film festivals to promote our film. I would attend Aesthetica Short Film Festival which would be a great opportunity for our film as it specialises in short films.
