What is the function of lipids?
Lipids
Uses:– Long Term Energy Storage• LIPIDS ARE BEST AT ENERGY STORAGE
– Chemical messengers– Water-proofing– Structure– Cell membranes
Structure
• Elements in Lipids– C, H and a little bit of O
• Usually long chains of carbon and hydrogen with two oxygens on the end
• These long chains are generally called fatty acids
Saturated v. Unsaturated Fatty Acids
• Saturated Fatty acids have all single bonds
• Unsaturated Fatty acids have at least one double bond. They are BENT.
Form at Room Temperature
• Saturated Fatty Acids are solid at room temperature
• Unsaturated are liquid
Checkpoint Question
• Do you think saturated or unsaturated fatty acids cause more health problems?
• Why?
LIPIDS ARE NOT POLYMERS
• Lipids ARE NOT POLYMERS
• Lipids are just grouped together because:– They are all non-polar– They are all hydrophobic (hate water/can’t
dissolve in water)
• Types:– Triglycerides– Steroids– Wax– Phospholipids
Triglycerides
• One glycerol + three fatty acids
Steroids
• Four fused rings
Waxes
• A long chain alcohol linked to a long chain fatty acid
Phospholipid
• Found in membranes• Glycerol + 1 phosphate group + 2 fatty acids
Checkpoint:
• How is the structure of lipids related to their function in energy storage?
