Research • Primary • Observe people in similar

environment, use of similar products, opinions of potential users

• Where could you gather information?

• Materials- suitable for the environment

• Safety • Suitable finishes • Can you visit specialist shops or

venues • Construction methods

Secondary Information from books or internet Anthropometric data, ergonomic Photographs of products Information about materials Social, moral and environmental issues Pictures for moodboard Physical products to see how they’ve been made

What do you do with the research?

• CREATE AN INSPIRATION BOARD • DATA OR OTHER RESOURCES • CREATE A MOOD BOARDS • COPIES FROM DESIGN BOOKS • ANTHROPOMETRIC DATA

• TASK: TO CREATE A JOB BAG FOR THE FOLLOWING BRIEF : • The Advanced Innovation Challenge Theme for 2011 • Public spaces can help promote social interaction and a sense of community. a well-designed and

managed public space can be an integral part of the character, economic attractiveness and uniqueness of a place.

• You have been approached as a designer to address one of the Design Challenges*. This will help to develop a range of innovative products that will be suitable for use in a public space.

• You will be required to gather research for the 'Job Bag' as explained by your subject teacher/s. Use the checklist on the previous slide to help put the Job Bag together.

Writing a brief and Specification

• WRITING A BRIEF AND SPECIFICATION

SPECIFICATION MUST BE SPECIFIC TO THAT PRODUCT AND NOT TRANSFERABLE IT MUST BE FULLY JUSTIFIED. IT SHOULD BE DURABLE, WHY? CREATE A BRIEF, SPEC AND KEY POINTS FOR EACH OF THE PAST PAPERS PROVIDED REMEMBER: Many candidates restated the design challenge word for word in this section. Candidates should be encouraged to write clear and precise design briefs that develop the design challenge further and offer scope for creativity. The majority of candidates identified the appropriate user groups for their products.

HERE IS A GOOD EXAMPLE OF THE DESIGN SPEC AND BRIEF PAGE WRITE YOUR JUSTIFICATION IN ANOTHER COLOUR TO HIGHLIGHT TO THE EXAMINER THAT YOU UNDERSTAND THE IMPORTANCE OF THE JUSTIFICATION The more successful concentrate their thinking on the given situation, functional and user needs of the product, and ensure that the relevance of all points are explained. Note detail includes sizes and all points are justified

The specification discriminates well. Candidates need to imagine themselves and/or their user in the situation they are designing for to avoid generic unjustified points Don’t repeat the exam question What area are you pursing for the rest of the exam? Try to be as full in your explanation as possible Does your brief allow scope for innovation? Is the design brief clear? “I am going to design and make....” followed by a general description of the type of products you will feel will answer the challenge you have chosen It should allow flexibility (for when you start designing) Describe material properties- not specific materials at this stage Safety, size, functions, properties of materials, cost of manufacture

DESIGN TASK

• THE EXAM IS FOCUSED ON A STUDENTS ABILITY TO THINK LATERALLY AND CREATIVELY. BEING ABLE TO DRAW IN 3D AND QUICKLY, WITH SUFFICIENT CONSTRUCTION DETAIL IS KEY TO THIS!

• DEVELOPING SKETCHING TECHNIQUES, CRATING, ISOMETRIC, PERSPECTIVE, EXPLODED VIEWS

• • 4X4 DATA DESIGN TASKS. • START WITH A PHOTOGRAPH OR LINE DRAWING OF AN EXISTING

PRODUCT AND SPLIT PAGE IN FOUR, EACH STUDENT DEVELOPS THE IDEA IN ONE OF THE BOXES AND IT IS PASSED TO THE NEXT TO FURTHER DEVELOP THE IDEA

• USE THE SCRIBBLE BELOW TO CREATE 3D DRAWINGS OF THE FOLLOWING. AN MP3 PLAYER, A CHAIR, A PIECE OF JEWELLERY, AND A SINGLE PERSON TRANSPORT

candidates explored the problem in depth considering the outdoor environment, context and market they were designing for.

TRY MARKING OTHER EXAMPLES – IDENTIFY WHY YOU AWARDED OR DIDN’T AWARD MARKS – THIS WILL HELP YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT THE EXAMINER IS LOOKING FOR

Candidate is using a colour coding system to show manufacturing details, material choices, identifying when he is hitting a

spec point

Creative response that also considers how /when/where and who the product may be used by and effects of the surroundings, weather etc Think about environment hat the product will be used in.

Outdoor, indoor, water resistant, sterile, knock down to use the following year etc

Each design challenge always has two strands make sue you address both from the outset

Expand on all points and be detailed

You can use drawings and remember to include the colour coding system –

remember a key

Who is the target market, the consumer or the user? Have you considered them in the design? Do you need to be specific? What

age, sizes etc?

Exploring the problem

How do you explore your thoughts? What are the key things to remember?

The Challenge Try not to enter the exam with pre-conceived ideas as this will limit your ability to respond creatively to the challenges The themes are set to prevent over –preparation for the challenge Candidates should collect their own Job Bag which is taken into session 1 and 2 Initial Thoughts • Use a mix of text and drawings to explore the theme and identify possible

areas/problems • Top mark students should explore the challenge widely and should be encouraged

to take risks and think creatively • Problem- Top marks will mean the problem has been considered in depth,

considering the environment and market (who, what why, when, where etc) they will be designing for

• Specification- the more successful students concentrate their thinking on the functional and user needs of the product, and ensure the relevance of all points are explained. Generic statements cannot be awarded marks unless made relevant to the question through specific references to the situation and careful justification. Examiners will expect you to explain “why” and justify points

Ideas • A mix of drawings, text and annotation should be used. Modeling and

photographs can occasionally be used • Higher performing students will produce a good range of creative ideas that link to

the specification and potential users • Sketches of full designs and parts of designs • Annotation should relate to materials and construction methods • To be awarded the high marks, the ideas must be functionally different rather than

relatively superficial changes in shape • Evaluative comments should be positive and negative to score highly and should

clearly relate to specification • Group Feedback- The score highly they should demonstrate that they have taken

the feedback responded giving suggested improvements – use of sketches can help to illustrate

• Mind map all initial thoughts • Even if you don’t think they are great Get all thoughts down in a mind map Be creative!!! • Don’t just do the ordinary ideas • Don’t repeat what is in the question • Sketch out ideas if you have time- rough

ones • Use the additional space to ensure this is

done fully • Think outside the box • Get some whacky ideas down too! • Analyse the problem thoroughly • Show your open thinking • MIND MAP AND SKETCHES

• Remember there are always two points to

every question make sure that you hit both! • Candidates who used a combination of

sketches and written work tended to score higher marks
