The Oral Communication strand is dedicated to meeting the academic needs of students by teaching them how to comprehend the spoken English used by instructors and students in college classrooms. These texts provide engaging activities for students to practice academic listening and academic speaking.
Authentic Classroom Interactions and Lectures > Students learn to listen to lectures and take notes, then use
their notes for other academic tasks such as tests or small group discussions.
Effective Academic Speaking Tasks > Speaking tasks resemble the types of academic tasks expected of
students in the college environment. These speaking tasks include participating in class, engaging in formal and informal small group discussions on lecture content, and presenting oral summaries.
Integrated Academic Vocabulary > The Academic Word List is integrated throughout the Oral
Communication strand. Students develop techniques for learning and using new academic vocabulary in order to recognize the words when they hear them and to use them in their spoken English.
Online Teaching and Study Centers > These instructor and student web sites feature teaching notes,
answer keys, sample syllabi, downloadable quizzes, handouts, transparencies, and audio scripts for instructors, along with flashcards, structured listening activities, and ACE practice tests for students.

The Writing strand prepares students for academic written work by teaching them the language, content, and rhetoric needed for success in college courses. These texts build student confidence by presenting step-by-step, easy-to-learn processes for effective writing.
Authentic Writing Assignments > The writing assignments have been drawn from actual college
courses across the curriculum. Students will find the assignments highly motivating when they realize they may receive such assign-ments in the future.
Authentic Writing Models > Models provide specific examples of writing so that students
can compare writing styles, discuss writing strategies, and understand instructor expectations.
Power Grammar > Students have diverse grammar and rhetorical needs, so Power
Grammar boxes introduce the grammar structures they need for fluency and accuracy in academic written English.
Online Teaching and Study Centers > These instructor and student web sites provide teaching notes,
answer keys, handouts, student writing samples, text-specific rubrics, sample syllabi and sample rubrics, downloadable quizzes, and transparencies for instructors, along with additional writing practice, links to online writing centers, and ACE practice tests for students.

The Vocabulary strand is designed to support the Oral Communication, Reading, and Writing strands by helping students develop the ability to understand and use the vocabulary in those strands which come from the Academic Word List (AWL). The AWL contains 570 word families that make up the vast majority of words students need to know in order to comprehend college textbooks. These books can be used as stand alone texts in a vocabulary class or as supple-ments in reading, writing, or oral communication classes.
Contextualized Vocabulary Practice > Vocabulary is always presented and practiced within contexts
that represent real usage. The sentence structure, surrounding language, examples, and collocations represent the language that students will encounter in academic texts.
Exercise Variety to Increase Student Interest and Motivation > Exercises have been carefully designed and sequenced to
ensure that students use new words frequently and in a variety of ways in order to help with mastery. The exercise variety helps motivate students.
Review Practice > Review sections provide practice with the targeted vocabulary and help
students take charge of their own learning.
Online Teaching and Study Centers > These instructor and student web sites feature downloadable quizzes,
answer keys, chapter reviews, and handouts for instructors, along with crossword puzzles, matching exercises, flashcards, and ACE practice tests for students.
