The Options Process - FAQs
Won’t students be too young to make these important decisions?
• We have increased the advice and guidance we offer students to help
make choices • We will offer taster sessions in the
school day
Won’t 3 years be too long a period for students to study
GCSE over?
• We have done this in Science and Maths and it has produced very
strong results • Departments may not start GCSE
work until later in Year 9 once students are ready
Won’t they miss important Key Stage 3 content if you
finish in Year 8?
• Students are only choosing the subjects they wish to continue with
to Key Stage 4 • Departments will use Year 9 to finish
outstanding KS3 content first if it is essential to the subject
Why do they need to do so many choices, wouldn’t it
be better to enjoy the variety of subjects at Key
Stage 3?
• Our first priority is preserving student choice as we believe this motivates
students to learn most of all • Student voice has informed us that students like the prospect of being able
to concentrate on their favoured choices sooner
The Options Process - FAQs
The Options Process – Conversations to have at home
• Keeping a spread of subjects • Realistic expectations of coursework heavy
choices • Engage with Taster Sessions • Changing choices is not possible after they
have started them in Year 9

‘Top Tips’ for the supportive parent/guardian…
• Develop a positive environment at home – Calm/Quiet area – No phone – Create a schedule TOGETHER!!
• Schedule breaks – Suggest chunking work with regular breaks – Give them some time to be a child
• Ask them to discuss their revision/coursework/lessons – Take some time to boost their confidence – Ask them to explain it, after all its possible you know less then they do! – Do they know how to get support in school?
• Learn something yourself – This doesn't have to be big or long term. Simple quick online learning to support students – Share the interest and improve the engagement – “We can learn it together”
• Plan for after the exams/assessments (something to look forward to) – Something small that they haven't been able to due to exams or upcoming assessment revision

Aims of whole school assessment and reporting. • Every child knows how they are doing, and understands what
they need to do to improve. • Every teacher is equipped to make well-founded judgements
about learners’ attainment and how to plan to improve it. • Every subject has systems for making regular, useful,
manageable and accurate assessments. • Every parent knows how their child is doing, what they need to
do to improve, and how they can support the child and their teachers.
• Every student who requires intervention is identified.
You may remember this from your youth…

Consistency in Formative Assessment
• Many departments presented formative feedback in different ways.
• Parents often ask how they can help support students but are not sure how.
• Students are often unclear of, can’t find, lose sheets, or just forget formative targets.
Yellow Feedback Stickers
Yellow Feedback Stickers
• Very simple message to students and parents. • Visually clear • Common language in all subjects, in every
year-group: ‘Look at your yellow sticker!’

• Subject specific queries should be directed to the teacher concerned as they will be able to offer directed support. The names of the teachers are listed on the student’s copies of their timetables.
• If you feel that the issue is more urgent, or of a sensitive nature, Mrs Firth as Head of Year or myself Mrs Bennett (Transition / Inclusion manager) can be contacted.
