    What is different?

    A raised PARTICIPATION AGE

    The age at which young people can leave learning

    Learning is classed as any education delivered

    In the workplace (apprenticeships and training)

    In further education settings

    WHY?

    To prevent young people drifting into unskilled jobs orunemployment.

    Higher qualifications lead to higher levels of pay andgreater job security

    What does this mean for year 9?

    From 2014 young people will stay on ineducation or training until their18thbirthday

    This means students can leave school afterGCSEs but they must go onto:

    Further education Apprenticeships

    A job with a training scheme

    What do we need to do?

    To think of our young people as prospectiveemployees, not just students, with skill sets to

    develop To help them explore the wide range of careeroptions

    To help them understand the choices they have

    To give them access to opportunities in FE, HEand the workplace

    To be well-informed

    To offer individualised careers support

    Full-time, Qualified, independent and impartialcareers adviser in school

    Additional support provided by LA Increased careers AIG provision in contrast with

    many schools locally and nationally All of year 11 will do WORK EXPERIENCE

    Wide range of careers related activities Partnerships with local and regional businesses Cover year 7 to 13 Resources available on-line and in school
