STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT OF THE WEEK

The first disciples of Jesus in today’s Gospel left their work and their daily routines to fol-low him. They abandoned their livelihoods, familiar surroundings and the lives to which they had become accustomed to be closer to him. The good steward finds ways to be re-moved from what may be a comfortable exist-ence or daily routine in order to serve the Lord more faithfully. All too often, out of fear, inse-curity or even selfishness, we refuse to leave the safe cocoon of existence we have created for ourselves in order to hear the Lord’s call and be challenged by his Gospel. Perhaps we should reflect on what comforts we need to sacrifice in order to be better stewards of God’s compassionate life.

From the Pastor

To the parish family of St. Martha, The Scripture readings for the 3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time convey a real sense of urgency and signals that we need to respond to God’s call in our lives. In the first reading from the Book of Jo-

nah the prophet announces, “Forty days more and Nineveh will be destroyed.” In Mark’s Gospel Jesus pro-claims, “This is the time of fulfillment. The Kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the Gospel.” In both situations the focus is not so much that God is using a threat in order to get us human beings to obey. Rather the Word of God is revealing to us that we possess the power to change (“repent”) and thus help bring good into our lives and into the lives of others. We do not need a prophet to remind us that pride, greed, and hatred constantly bring the world to the brink of destruction. The disaster that threatens humanity is not something that God sends our way. It is something that we humans do to one another. The message from these Scripture readings reminds us that, just as the danger of destruction does not arise from some huge force outside the universe, so too does the hope for salvation. The proclamation of the coming of the Kingdom by Jesus is very clear. This Kingdom was begun when Jesus entered human history through his Incarnation. This same Kingdom is planted in us when we are baptized. All of us are bearers of God’s King-dom and agents for change in our world. The Kingdom will grow as we grow in our baptismal commitment and as we begin to accept responsibility for our own personal growth and for that of our society.

The Gospel also teaches us that our response will involve personal sacrifice if it is to be authentic and open to God’s Kingdom. When Jesus called Simon and Andrew to become his disciples, the text tells us that they “abandoned their nets and followed him.” In other words these fishermen sacrificed their work and liveli-hood and followed the call of the Lord. There does not seem to have been any hesitation on their part. The same is true when Jesus called James and John, the sons of Zebedee: “They left their father in the boat along with the hired men and followed him.” I believe that most human beings truly want to do good and help others. However, we tend to hesitate and postpone our decision to answer God’s call. Sometimes we are not confident that we can make a difference or that we possess the abilities and the talents to bring about the change our world needs. We might be afraid of the sacrifice that the Lord will ask of us. Whatever the case may be, the Word of God sum-mons each of us to help build the Kingdom and to do so today. There is indeed a real urgency about this task!

PERPETUAL EUCHARISTIC ADORATION CELEBRATING 20 YEARS OF DEVOTION TO PRAYER IN ST. MARTHA’S PARISH

“Could you not watch one hour with Me?” Mark 14:37 Our parish is incredibly blessed to have Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration available in our adoration chapel twenty-four hours a day. Jesus dwells in the Blessed Sacrament because of His infinite love for each one of us, and He is always present there in the Blessed Sacrament patiently waiting for us to come and spend time with Him. Listed below are hours that are most in need of adorers at this time. However, please note that no hour is really ever “filled” because parishioners are always invited to choose an hour that works best for them, regardless of whether or not there are other adorers already there in prayer. Both regular adorers and substitutes are needed at this time. 2015 Rite of Election at St. Martha Catholic Church Sunday, February 22nd at 3:00 PM

St. Martha will again host the Rite of Election for the Archdiocese. We will welcome perhaps 1,000 visitors to our church from several local parishes; each parish will be assigned pews in a section of our church. Many volunteers are needed to help direct our guests to their correct seating area as soon as the 1:00 PM Spanish Mass dismisses.

If you’d like to support St. Martha and meet fellow parishioners, please consider this one-time commitment. Volun-teer duties begin by 1:30 PM (lining up visitors until the 1:00 PM Mass dismisses) and end with the 3:00 PM start of Mass. We need Greeters to welcome guests and point them toward their assigned area and Ushers to label each pew by parish name and help guide everyone to their available seats. Further instructions will be sent via e-mail to volun-teers. If you can help or would like more information, please e-mail our volunteer coordinator at [email protected] and indi-cate if you prefer to be a Greeter or an Usher and whether or not you speak Spanish (some attendees will speak Span-ish only, so this need is key). We do ask gentlemen to wear a jacket and tie and ladies to wear a dress or pant suit. Thank you in advance to all volunteers for helping St. Martha to welcome and be of service to our neighboring parish-es!

Special request of those attending the February 22nd Spanish Mass at 1:00 PM Given the large number of visitors for the 3:00 PM Rite of Election Mass, many of whom will be assembled in the narthex and rotundas by the time your Mass ends, we ask that you park in the rear of the church (southwest lot) on this date and exit Mass behind the altar to allow our many guests to more easily enter the church. Your help is greatly appreciated!

PARISH BLOOD DRIVE The first parish Blood Drive for 2015, sponsored by the Knights of Columbus, is scheduled for Sunday, January 25th, from 8:00 am until 1:45 pm at the Activity Center on Woodland Hills Drive. The Knights of Columbus and Columbian Squires will be in the Narthex before and after each Mass on January 24 & 25 to assist you with an appointment to donate. All who donate, or who attempt to donate, will receive a long-sleeved “Commit for Life” t-shirt.

You may also schedule an appointment by e-mailing [email protected] or call Bobby McAndrews at 281-650-9533. You may also schedule your appointment online by visiting www.giveblood.org and enter the sponsor code 1220. The Blood Center will provide a Double Red Cell Aphaeresis, which will allow some donors to give two units of red blood cells from a single donation. Walk-ins are always welcome on the day of the Blood Drive. As always, the Knights of Columbus would like to thank St. Martha parishioners for generously giving the gift of life. Other Blood Drive dates for 2015 include: May 17th, Aug. 9th and Oct. 25th.

Enriquecimiento y fortalecimiento a parejas constituidas. Planificación familiar natu-

ral para parejas católicas. Disciplina positiva para padres e hijos. Formación en nuestra fe católica. Crecimiento y desarrollo espiritual. Incentivo y formación de nuevos liderazgos en

la comunidad. Ayuda sicológica y emocional. Oportunidades de integración entre padres e hijos. Reducción de brechas generacio-

nales.
