STEWARDSHIP THOUGHT

OF THE WEEK That we may take time to be grateful to

God, who is the ultimate giver of all gifts. “Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving,

make your requests known to God.” (Philippians 4:6-7)

St. Paul reminds us that our God is an abundant God, the ultimate giver of gifts. He promises to give us all that we need. When we trust that God will take care of us, it is easier for us to share what we have been given.

Jubilee Year of Mercy Pope Francis chose to inaugurate the Jubilee Y ear of Mercy last Tuesday because December 8 marks the fiftieth anniversary of the closing of Vati-can II. That council, Pope Francis reminds us, inaugurated a new phase in the Church’s history. The Spirit called the Church to tear down the walls that for far too long had made it a fortress, and to proclaim the gospel in a new, more accessible way. Pope Francis quotes Saint John XXIII in declar-ing the Church’s preference for “the medicine of mercy,” and Blessed Paul VI in proposing the Good Samaritan as our model for discipleship (Misericordiae Vultus, 4). Pope Francis adds that God’s mercy is “the beat-ing heart of the Gospel,” and that mercy “must penetrate the heart and mind” of every disciple (MV , 12). Three times today’s Gospel asks, “What should I do?” Pope Francis would say: Imitate Jesus, who came not wield-ing the fiery judgment that John the Baptist had threatened, but instead im-parting healing, compassion, forgiveness—mercy!

From the Pastor

To the parish family of St. Martha, The Scripture readings for the 3rd Sunday of Advent signal an urgency in our preparation for the birth of the Savior. The message we have heard from John the Baptist throughout the season of

Advent has called us to acts of heroic virtue and generous outreach to others. The Scriptural images that the prophet uses, e.g. “level mountains, fill in the valleys, make straight the highways,” literally challenge us to help change the world around us. At first these challenges sound so attractive and summon us to get started immediately on an adventure of witnessing to our faith. However, as soon as we try to respond to the Baptist’s call to action, we realize the enormity of the task and the fact that we must do this consistently on a regular basis. Thus, in this weekend’s Gospel account some of the people ask John, “What are we to do?” John the Baptist’s response takes the luster off their previous excitement. In effect he says to one in-quirer, “Share your wealth.” To the tax collector he says, “Charge only what the law allows; let justice and fairness guide your actions.” To soldiers the Baptist cautions, “Do not misuse your authority. Treat people with respect. Be content with your role in life.” I am sure that each of us can easily imagine ourselves in the Gospel account and how the demands would cause us to squirm to some extent.

If we are to respond to the Advent call to “prepare the way of the Lord,” we need look no further than our daily lives and the many small, unexciting, and sometimes even irritating challenges that face us each and every day of our lives. It is by meeting these demands again and again with patience, with justice, and with love that we make ready the way of the Lord. This past week provided an insight into how this type of Gos-pel response can be lived out. We celebrated two wonderful Marian feasts that capture the themes of Ad-vent in a marvelous way: the feasts of the Immaculate Conception and Our Lady of Guadalupe. In the Gos-pel passage for one of those feasts we heard Mary described as “full of grace.” And indeed she was! Her greatness originated in God’s call to her and her response: “May it be done to me according to Your word.” There is a greatness in our lives too when we realize God’s gracious call to us through Baptism and we try to respond generously to that call. The mission of changing the world is a real one and comes from Jesus Christ himself. The adventurous imagery used in the Gospel is not deceptive. It envisions a real world that is truly possible when we allow God’s grace to permeate our whole lives. The way of the Lord can be closed off only if we refuse God’s invitation to become part of His wonderful adventure of transforming everything human. In essence this is what the feast of Christmas is really all about.

STEWARDSHIP—A WAY OF LIFE Fruits of Your Labor…

MONICA’S HOPE: Two years ago, a couple from St. Martha's parish realized a need for support for family members of troubled children of ALL ages and formed Monica's Hope. St. Monica, who prayed tirelessly for the conversion of her son, is our patron. God heard her prayers and her son, St. Augustine, became a great Saint and Doctor of the church. He hears our prayers, too. Over time we have witnessed so many positive changes in our lives and those of our children. All are welcome as we pray for our children and each other, study scripture and spiritual writings, and accompany one another on our journeys in/with Christ's love and mercy. We gather the first Mon-day of the month from 7:30 - 9:00 pm in the library at the Woodland Hills campus. GABRIEL PROJECT: The Gabriel Project Min-istry helps mothers through crisis pregnancies. We are currently working with two mothers that have contacted us and we are helping them emotionally and spiritually. They are both due any day and we assure them that they will have what they need to bring their babies home. Please pray for the moms and their babies. Our one mother is going through extreme difficult times as her 17 year old son Chris-tian was in car accident and has sever spinal inju-ries. Please keep Christian in your prayers that God will watch over him and guide him and his family during this difficult time. We are pleased to announce the birth of two new babies. One precious boy and one beautiful girl. Please continue to pray for our mothers and the babies all over the world. The Gabriel Project Ministry wishes everyone a Merry Christmas and a healthy and Happy New Year!

CHRISTMAS FLOWERS Enclosed in your envelopes for December is a special enve-lope marked “Special Offering for Christmas Flowers.” All

donations in these envelopes will be dedicated to the purchase of the flow-ers and greens used in the Church. There is a place on the back of the en-velope for you to indicate in whose memory you would like the donation to be. Deadline to turn envelopes in is Sunday, December 13.

Perpetual Eucharistic Adoration “Could you not watch one hour with Me?” Mark 14:37

Our parish is incredibly blessed to have Perpetual Eucha-ristic Adoration available in our chapel twenty-four hours every day. Jesus dwells in the Blessed Sacrament be-cause of His infinite love for each one of us, and He is always present there in the Blessed Sacrament patiently waiting for us to come and spend time with Him. Listed below are the hours that are most in need of ador-ers at this time. However, please note that no hour is ever really “filled” because people have schedules that change. Parishioners are always invited to choose an hour that works best for them, regardless of whether or not there are other adorers already scheduled for that time. Both regular adorers and substitutes are always needed. Even if you are unable to commit to a regular hour each week, please feel free to visit our Blessed Lord at any time knowing that He is always waiting for us with joyful anticipation. Second adorers are needed for the following hours: Sunday: 1-2 AM, 2-3 PM, 3-4 PM. Monday: 2-3 PM, 11 PM-Midnight. Tuesday: 1-2 AM. Wednesday: 1-2AM, 6-7AM. Thursday: 1-2 PM. Friday: 1-2AM. Sat-urday: 1-2 AM, 3-4 AM. If you are interested in participating in this ministry or would like more information, please contact Robyn Laumbach at 281-360-7897 or robynbfly@embarqmail. com. If you need a substitute for your holy hour, please call your appropriate division leader listed below:

Teams of Our Lady USA A movement of conjugal spirituality

Marriage is a challenge. Whether a couple is newlywed, raising a family, or “empty nesting”, the call to grow to-gether in love is ever present. Often couples find they are living in a social climate where forces and stresses are at work that can undermine both their marriage and their faith. All over the world, couples have found a way to meet their desire for growth in love and faith through the Teams of Our Lady (TOOL) movement. A team is a group of five to seven couples that have de-cided to join together to find support in their efforts to lead Gospel lives. The team meets once a month, in each other’s homes, for a simple meal and in a spirit of friend-ship share their experiences of the previous month. After dinner, the mood shifts to the more obviously spiritual as the team reflects on scripture and prays. Finally, they dis-cuss study material on married life and faith. The team meeting is truly a unique gathering – lively and enjoyable, yet structured and meaningful. If you would like to join such a group, plan on attending a 45 minute Information Meeting on Sunday, December 13, 2015 at 3:00 PM at the home of Mary Anne and Brian Sokol (in Hunters Ridge) contact Mary Anne Sokol @ 281-642-3821or e-mail [email protected] for more information and to reserve a spot.

ONE OF THE BEST KEPT SECRETS AT ST. MARTHA

Did you know that you have a “Second Family” just waiting for the opportunity to share an hour or two visiting in your home, to help with simple errands, deliver a meal or to offer a ride to an appointment?

If you didn’t, that’s no surprise to us! For eleven years the Second Family Ministry has been one of the best kept secrets in our parish. And now we are spreading the word about what a great ministry this is! You might consider discovering the joy of letting someone into your life by offering to help out just a little bit. Or, you might like to join the Second Family Care Team and reach out to another member of the congregation who would benefit from your “bite sized commit-ment”. As always, the blessings flow both ways, and we learn that through simple tasks relationships are built and lives are changed. Please help spread the word. We are asking that you be the eyes and ears and perhaps even the hands and feet of this wonderful ministry. Tell your friends, be alert to special needs and phone if you know someone that would benefit from having a Second Family, or if you would like to have a Care Team. And, finally, prayerfully consider joining this ministry and see what a difference a few hours a month can mean to someone who is home alone, can no longer drive, is car-ing for a loved one or is isolated and a bit lonely. To learn more about the vision and the work of your Second Family Care Team at St. Martha please call Peggy Wehe at 281-546-9884 or e-mail [email protected]
