CATHOLIC CHURCH AND SCHOOL Saint Pius X parish: www.spxcc.org school: www.stpiusxschoolcc.org Welcome to St. Pius X Parish July 5, 2015 FOURTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME “To renew all things in Christ” Dear Friends, This past Monday, I attended the ordination and installation of one of my seminary classmates, Bishop Brendan Cahill, the new bishop of the diocese of Victoria. Not only was it a glorious occasion for the Catholic faithful of Victoria, it was also a good opportunity for me to catch up with brother priests from other dioceses, some of whom I had not seen in years. During our brief visit, we updated each other on our current assignments and we recalled stories from our seminary years. When they asked me where I was stationed, I mentioned that I am assigned as pastor of my home parish of St. Pius X. When they heard this, many of them were intrigued and asked me, “And how is that going?” Obviously, what they were really asking is whether or not people who had watched me grow up had accepted me now as their shepherd. It was a good question. As we hear in the gospel this weekend, Jesus didn’t fare so well when he returned to his hometown. We hear Jesus’ frustration with his townspeople’s obstinacy when he says: “A prophet is not without honor except in his native place and among his own kin and in his own house.” Isn’t it true that the people who listen to us least are often the people closest to us? Happily, I was able to respond to my classmates that I have felt a tremendous amount of acceptance here. It has been nothing but positive. While it is rare that a priest is assigned to his home parish, I think what has helped me is the number of intervening years since I left for seminary, as well a lot of new faces that have added greater diversity to the parish. In all sincerity, it has been a tremendous blessing for me to be back home with all of you and I appreciate how you have opened your arms to embrace me as pastor. There is no doubt, however, that Jesus’ words ring true in many respects. It is quite true that the people who are closest to us are frequently the most likely to put up the greatest obstacles to us. All one has to do is sit in the confessional or the counseling room a few times to discover that some of the most strained relationships people have are with their own family members, relatives, and friends. Husbands stubbornly fail to listen to their wives and wives readily discount the advice of their husbands. Children ignore parents and parents often deny issues with their children. Why is this? One of the reasons the people closest to us are the most difficult is also one of the reasons they are the greatest blessing. They know us. They know us very well. Our relatives and closest friends know most of our weaknesses and our fears. They know our frailties and idiosyncrasies. They know we are not perfect, and that we have many faults. They know our sins and they know our hypocrisies. The minute we try to preach to them the need to change, they are quick to point out our own faults. In some ways, we feel the people closest to us are too biased to give good advice. Therefore, we tend to reach out to people on the outside thinking that they are somehow more objective. That is why one spouse gets frustrated with his or her spouse when he or she takes the advice of a total stranger, even if it was the very same advice. Yet, the fact that someone close to us knows us can be very helpful, because that person might have a deeper insight as to why we do things. Jesus could not work any miracle in his home town because of the bias of his own people. They had built up preconceptions More Than 50 Years of Faith!

” Dear Friends,

This past Monday, I attended the ordination and installation of one of my seminary classmates, Bishop Brendan Cahill, the new bishop of the diocese of Victoria. Not only was it a glorious occasion for the Catholic faithful of Victoria, it was also a good opportunity for me to catch up with brother priests from other dioceses, some of whom I had not seen in years. In all sincerity, it has been a tremendous blessing for me to be back home with all of you and I appreciate how you have opened your arms to embrace me as pastor.

There is no doubt, however, that Jesus’ words ring true in many respects. It is quite true that the people who are closest to us are frequently the most likely to put up the greatest obstacles to us. about who Jesus was, and so they were unable to grasp that he could be someone more. Their prejudice prevented them from allowing the grace of God to work in their midst.

How many miracles could have worked in our lives had we opened our minds and allowed the grace of God to work through our own kin! How much trouble could we have saved ourselves if we had expanded our minds to listen to a friend! Have we missed any miracles because we have developed prejudices or preconceptions toward someone? He we thrown up an obstacle that has prevented us from growing? The gospel this weekend challenges us to let the grace of God work. Let Jesus speak to you through the ones you love!

God bless!
