Why popular music?

Popular music is defined by the musical taste your classroom population. It is not limited to “pop” music, or to music that is deemed popular by external entities. Teachers who choose this definition of popular music, and choose to teach this music in their class infuse relevancy in every lesson. We know students are not a blank slate, why not capitalize on the rich musical histories that are right before you! Designing Your 12 Weeks

Techniques and Content Knowledge for Beginners by Instrument

Ukulele

• Large Motor Skill – posture, alignment, strumming • Fine Motor Skill – chord placement, chord quality, chord transitions • Reading chord diagrams • Reading chord placement on a lyric sheet

Guitar *mostly the same as ukulele, but much more difficult for students

• Large motor skill – posture, alignment, strumming • Fine motor skill – chord placement, chord quality, chord transitions • Reading chord diagrams (and reading tablature) • Reading chord placement on a lyric sheet

Piano

• Large motor skill – posture, alignment, rhythmic playing of chords, 2 hands simultaneously (root in LH, chord in RH)

• Fine motor skill – root position chord shape, melodic 5 finger playing, arpeggiation • Building major and minor chords • Reading chord placement on a lyric sheet

Voice

• Disposition – everyone can sing, singing is a skill, define “bad singer” and “can’t sing” • Registration – chest, head and/or falsetto, navigating the voice change • Matching pitch • Tone quality – breath and tone, vowel length and tone, mouth shape and tone

Getting Started – 1 Easy Skill You Can Teach Right Away on Piano, Voice, and Guitar

Piano – Major & Minor Chord Construction Teaching your students to build major and minor chords on the piano allows for a quick skill that has tons of authentic applications. It begins the conversation on challenging fine and large motor skills and quickly presents opportunities to discuss slow skill development, repetition, and application in the repertoire. The beauty of this skill, is that a student can immediately apply it using their favorite popular song.

Suggested Sequence § Teach the letter names of the piano (do your students a favor and start on A… not on middle C J) § Teach the term “chord” as being three or more notes playing at one time § Practice playing white key chords together and overcome any fine and large motor skills § Demonstrate building chords by counting 4 and then 3 half steps for major and 3 and then 4 half

steps for minor § Demonstrate a familiar song that has chords accompanying a sung melody (i.e. “Someone Like You”

by Adele, “One Love” by Bob Marley, etc.)

Suggested Starter Song: “Stay” by Rhianna or “Hallelujah” by Leonard Cohen

Voice – Dispelling “I can’t sing.” How many times have you heard a student (or even and ADULT) spout off the claim that they “can’t sing.” Yes, there is a percentage (2-7%) of the population with amusia or with vocal fold paralysis. It is likely that the person uttering the disclaimer, however, is not afflicted with either of these conditions. I argue that behind every person who says they cannot sing is another person who once asked them to stop singing. If you can, in your first lesson, get students to throw this phrase out the window and to develop a culture that continues to support a “can sing” atmosphere, you will ACTUALLY be able to teach pitch, tone, support, phrasing, registration, and everything in between! Suggested Sequence

§ Explain that psychologically, the voice is an odd instrument. When you make a mistake on a piano, you can project your disappointment onto the exterior object. When your instrument is in your own body, disappointment and mistakes are internalize in a different way.

§ Do some breathing and physical warm-ups with the kids and you mentally alleviate their anxiety towards singing in front of each other (I find it helps if I make a fool of myself in front of them to show them that weird things sometimes happen when your instrument is in your body). Encourage them to be foolish, but to an appropriate level.

§ Sing some 2-3 note exercises, and try to pinpoint those that struggle with pitch matching. § Tell the group that you hear some voices searching for notes and ask their permission to give some

tips to make this problem better. § If the person with pitch matching problems is up for it, try giving them a quick mini-lesson in front of

the group. I ONLY recommend this, if you feel that this person is confident enough for it. Even if they do not match perfectly, praise their ability to hear that the note was too high or too low. Encourage them to slide around and to keep guessing at the pitch. If they do get the pitch just right, praise and applaud! “That is pitch matching! That is hard work! Thank you for taking a risk in front of us!”

§ Brainstorm songs that really connect to the class (I call them shower songs—songs that you LOVE to sing in the shower because the reverb makes you sound so good!)

§ Follow with small heterogeneously mixed small groups (5-6) where students perform a “mashup” of all of their shower songs a cappella. EVERYONE must sing together at one point and ALL must have a mini-solo. It should take the group ~12 mins to make the mash-up and 1 minute each to share.

Encouraging Phrases: (1) You can sing, you are just not comfortable singing; (2) If you can talk, you can sing; (3) You can sing, you just don’t know how to become better at it yet; and (4) 50% of vocal technique is believing that you can become better at singing! (Statistic not sourced…J)

Guitar – 2 String Power Chords Fine motor skills are a HUGE problem to overcome when playing guitar for the first time. You could start with simple melodies, like “Mary Had a Little Lamb,” but for high school aged students this seems almost embarrassingly juvenile. Why not start with some 2 string power chords that will encourage kids to stretch their fret fingers, isolate small movements in their strumming hand (pick fingers), and can be instantly applied on any popular song of their choosing. Suggested Sequence

o Introduce frets, strings, and practice coordinating the LH and RH in the press and strum execution that will be needed to strum a chord.

o Starting on strings 5 & 6, play an E power chord (you only need 1 finger for this!) with an open 6th string and a finger on fret 2 of string 5. Practice the press and strum coordination.

o Add another finger by playing an F or a G power chord on the same strings. o Keep adding chords and move up and down the frets or move to chords on strings 4 & 5. o If you have the students say the names of the chords as they play them, this is a great way to establish

pitch names on the neck of the guitar. Suggested Songs: “Smoke on the Water” by Deep Purple, “Smells Like Teen Spirit” by Nirvana, and “All the Small Things” by Blink 182 **The beauty of power chords are that they can be used to play any song!

I met this little girlie, her hair was kind of curly, Went to her house to bust her out, I had to leave real early.

These girls are really sleazy, all they just say is, “Please, me,” Or spend some time and rock a rhyme, I said, “It's not that easy.”

CHORUS

In New York, the people talk and try to make us rhyme They really hawk, but we just walk, because we have no time And in the city it's a pity, 'cause we just can't hide Tinted windows don't mean nothing, they know who's inside.

CHORUS

Huh!

When I wake up people take up mostly all of my time. I'm not singing, phone keep ringing so I make up a rhyme. I'm not bragging, people nagging, 'cause they think I'm a star. Always tearing what I'm wearing, I think they're going too far. A girl named Carol follows Darryl every gig we play, Then he dissed her and dismissed her, now she's jocking Jay. I ain't lying, girls be crying, 'cause I'm on TV They even bother my poor father, 'cause he's down with me.

We are not dumb, we don't use drugs, but you assume on your own They offer coke and lots of dope, but we just leave it alone. It's like that y'all, Y'ALL but we don't quit. You keep on, rock, shock, cause this is it.

One Man Can Change the World by Big Sean feat. Kanye West & John LegendOriginal Style: Hip Hop and R & B

B F# G#m7 D#m7They used to tell me, used to tell me B F# I hope you learn to make it on your own G#m7 D#m7 And if you love yourself just know you'll never be alone I hope that you get everything you want and that you chose I hope that it's the realest thing that you ever know Hope you get the pretty girls, that's pretty at everything Million dollar cribs havin' million dollar dreams And when you get it all just remember one thing Remember one thing That one man could change the world That one man could change the world All I, all I wanted was a hundred million dollars and a bad chick Imagine did so much some nights it felt like that I had it Back on the mattress Starin' at the ceilin' tryna connect the dots But it's hard makin' those attachments I'm talkin' dreamin' so hard, some nights it felt like draft day, you know? My, my step brother used to flip them bags outside the crib like it was trash day, no Kim K, but he bagged ye ye But when you're getting fast money, slow down, don't crash With all the drive in the world, swear you still need gas Look, think about it, close your eyes, dream about it Tell your team about it, go make million dollar schemes about it Success is on the way, I feel it in the distance Used to look up at the stars and be like ain't too much that's different I be shinin', they be shinin', get your one shot don't you miss it What you know bout' wakin' up everyday like you on a mission? And I I hope you learn to make it on your own And if you love yourself just know you'll never be alone I hope that you get everything you want and that you chose I hope that it's the realest thing that you ever know Hope you get the pretty girls, that's pretty at everything Million dollar cribs havin' million dollar dreams And when you get it all just remember one thing Remember one thing One man could change the world One man could change the world My grandma taught me if you write your name in stone you'll never get the white out I grinded out that black whole then performed up at the white house Standin' next to Jim Carrey, we traded stories then laughed I said you not the only one I know got rich wearin' masks Where I'm from I swear their broke, they need way more than the cast We need more than what you have and then we need more than that But how am I supposed to say I'm tired If that girl from West Virginia came up in conditions that I couldn't survive Went to war, came back alive On top of that became a female black captain When being black you had to extra extra try Way before James Brown made us proud She bought a crib on the same street as Marvin Gaye right there on Outer Drive And she taught me how to drive And she raised the kids, then the kids' kids, and she did it right Taught me how to love, taught me not to cry

When I die, I hope you teach me how to fly All my life you've been that angel in disguise sayin' I hope you learn to make it on your own And if you love yourself just know you'll never be alone I hope that you get everything you want and that you chose I hope that it's the realest thing that you ever know Hope you get the pretty girls, that's pretty at everything Million dollar cribs havin' million dollar dreams And when you get it all just remember one thing Remember one thing That one man can change the world That one man can change the world Thank you for callin' me, been thinkin' about me [Big Sean:] It's all good I love you grandma [Grandma:] Bye
