Healthy break and lunch
All schools are required to have and to implement a healthy eating policy
promotes concentration and therefore more active learning
Positive Peer Pressure
reinforces the importance of a healthy lifestyle – parental support
Key Stage 2 House System
All schools are required to have a Positive Behaviour Policy which has positive and negative consequences built in
Often links to systems in post primary schools
encourages children to understand and learn how to take responsibility for their actions
Key stage 2 theme : good citizenship
opportunity to reward pupils for their efforts in their work and behaviour
develops the children’s personal characteristics
positive contribution as active citizens in our community in the future

Negative consequences- reminder of rule given•Minus points are recorded on their house chart•Minus 3 points in one week – child moves onto yellow card•3 yellow cards in a half term = red card•Parents are required to sign these cards

Literacy in Key Stage 2
1. Talking & Listening • personal presentation skills, speaking clearly to

Developing : • joined handwriting (sample booklet) • creative independent writing - skills in expressing written ideas clearly in variety of formats e.g. letters, book reviews, adverts, posters etc.
Numeracy in Key Stage 2 : 5 areas 1. Number work
• 4 key skills – addition, subtraction, multiplication and division
• upper range in numbers from 999-millions
• fractions, decimals, %, money
• problems with all/some of these skills needed
• Multiplication tables/facts/patterns- speed and accuracy of facts – variety of methods taught for the various ways children learn- what works best for your child
• Develop link between multiplication and division • e.g. 5x2=10 2x5=10 • 10 divided by 2 =5 and 10 divided by 5=2 etc
• remaining tables not known from the easiest tables
• Mental maths counting – very important, ‘little and often’
Numeracy contd. 2. Measures- metric- importance of number skillsvolume/capacitylength(mm, cm, m, km), weight (g, kg), time (calendar, clock-am/pm, digital time), area (cm squared
3. Shape and Space – 2D and 3D shapes, angles (degrees, compass, probot floor turtles)

•Saturday morning assessment preparation (formerly called transfer tests or 11+)
•for transfer to grammar schools specifically
•formally begins in term 2 – special parent meeting •to address all issues about this
Primary 7•Buddies and Monitors
•Residential trip – summer term
•P7 graduation presentation– last week or so of June 2014
•Year 8 school visits throughout term 2 and 3
Police checking forms at back of hall for anyone who wishes to help out with swimming visits or trips.
