Spring 2015 SUBJECT: “ROCK THE NIGHT” OLD TAPPAN PTO ANNUAL FUNDRAISER May 7, 2015 at The Old Tappan Manor – Showcasing “THE NERDS”

Dear Friends of Old Tappan:

Our annual fundraiser for Old Tappan Elementary Schools is quickly approaching. On May 7, 2015 we will host “ROCK THE NIGHT” at the Old Tappan Manor. At this event, typically attended by approximately 200 community members, we auction gift cards, merchandise, and services generously donated by businesses like yours. The event proceeds will help pay for much-needed upgrades to the school playground, as well as creative enrichment programs for our students at both T. Baldwin Demarest and Charles De Wolf Middle School. If we each do a little, we can achieve a lot. Please support our children and make a donation in kind or services (donations are tax deductible). We will gladly pick up your donation whether a gift certificate, merchandise, or service.

Our School Fundraiser will have an extensive raffle event. We are anticipating that there will be 200 members from our community at the event. All sponsors are acknowledged in a program that our participants use as a guide throughout the evening.

Please feel free to contact me at [email protected] with any questions. On behalf of the entire Old Tappan community (and especially our kids), Thank you in advance for your generosity and support! THANK YOU! “No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted”. Aesop. Sincerely yours, Nicole Otto Fundraising Committee Chair

On April 28, 2015 , your children will be meeting with acclaimed author and poet Janet Wong. Ms. Wong is the author of twenty books, has been featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show and has read her books at the White House. Janet’s work is distinctive in its range of topics and delightfully celebrates her Korean and Chinese origins.

Should you wish to purchase a book, to be autographed for your child, or as a gift for someone else, please fill in the information below. Kindly return orders by March 20, 2015. No Late orders can be accepted. Please make checks payable to OTPTO

PICTURE BOOKS: YOU HAVE TO WRITE (hardcover) ------------------------------------------------------------$18.00____________ It's a class assignment. But you have nothing to write about. All the other kids seem to have something to tell because they start in right away. What can you do? Stop and think. No one else can tell your stories -- about your family, your dog or cat. No one else can tell how it was when your library book got soaked in the rain. But what if you don't like what you write? There are all sorts of ways to change it, to make it better. Keep on playing with your words, putting them together in different ways. You want whatever you write to be good. It will get better and better as you work on it. ALEX AND THE WEDNESDAY CHESS CLUB (hardcover)---------------------------------$18.00____________ Kindergarten is the perfect age to start playing chess, especially since studies have shown connections between chess and improved math and reading skills. This read-aloud will make children want to play this brain enriching game and see the value of perseverance. Parents’ Choice Silver Honor Award APPLE PIE 4TH OF JULY (paperback) ------------------------------------------------------- $ 8.00_____________ Celebrate diversity! Janet’s parents owned a mini-mart in rural Oregon that sold Chinese food-to-go, even on the 4th of July. TWIST: Yoga Poems (hardcover)------------------------------------------------------------- $18.00____________ Wong wrote this book as a gift for Julie Paschkis, the illustrator, who is passionate about yoga. “Finding the Center” compares Paschkis to Scorpion, and Wong to…a Doughnut. Bank Street Best Books of the Year; Garden State Children’s Book Award Nominee HOMEGROWN HOUSE (hardcover)------------------------------------------------------------- $17.00____________ It takes time to settle into a house, to learn to love it right, to make it feel homegrown. After the boxes are unpacked and the books are shelved (alphabetically), all a young girl wants to do is settle into her house. Grandmom says that it takes time to learn to love a house right, and this young girl is determined for hers to become homegrown. E. B. Lewis’s warm, familial scenes pair with Janet S. Wong’s yearning text for an intergenerational story of wishes, dreams, and a true sense of home. KNOCK ON WOOD (hardcover)------------------------------------------------------------- $20.00____________ What superstitions do you follow? In this collection of original poems, accomplished poet Janet S. Wong explores seventeen superstitions, some common, others that are less known, and delves into their origins as well as their lore. Rich, full-color illustrations by Julie Paschkis enhance each poem. The result from this award-winning team is sure to intrigue young readers and make them think again about things they often do, like opening an umbrella, walking under a ladder, or putting on a hat. CHAPTER BOOKS: ME AND ROLLY MALOO (paperback)----------------------------------------------------------$9.00____________ An unpopular girl cheats on a math test when the most popular school asks her to give her answers. This semi-chapter book, semi graphic-novel subtly explores the pressures children face socially, emotionally and academically.

MINN AND JAKE (paperback)--------------------------------------------------------------------$ 8.00_____________ Friends don’t let friends eat worms, but they do teach them to catch lizards! This story is about an unlikely friendship between nature-lover Minn and entrepreneurial cell-phone-toting Jake. BCCB Blue Ribbon A TEACHER FAVORITE: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------$30.00_______________ THE POETRY FRIDAY ANTHOLOGY: Poems For The School Year With Connections to the Common Core The Poetry Friday Anthology offers a set of 36 poems for each grade level, K-5 (a poem-a-week for the 9 months of the typical school year). Drawing on decades of experience in classrooms all over the world as well as volumes of academic research and writing, this book presents activities that are poem-specific, skill-based, developmentally

appropriate for each weekly poem—and that connect to the Common Core standards for poetry instruction.
