OML UPDATE, ISSUE NO : 5 MARCH 2014 K oç University Electrical En- gineering Professor Hakan Ürey has been qualified for the Eu- ropean Research Council’s (ERC) Advanced Grant of 2,5 million Euro. Prof. Ürey will be using the funding provided by the Council for his research on “Wearable Aug- mented Reality 3D Displays”. Being regarded as the most presti- gious research funding in Europe ERC has been awarded to several Nobel Laureate scientists previ- ously. The 2,5 million Euro fund- ing, the highest funding sum ever received in Turkey from the Euro- pean Commission framework pro- grams, will be used by Prof. Ürey in his research on “The Development of New Display Technologies for Augmented Reality and Three-Di- mensional Applications”. The re- search project aims to customize three-dimensional viewing and display technologies for personal use. The research will be conduct- ed at Optical Mems Labrotory Koç University, Istanbul. OML current- ly has 23 researchers and about 1/3 is engaged in the ERC project. ERC projects are divided into three groups for researchers in various stages of their careers:0-7 years (Starting), 7-12 years (Con- solidator), and senior researchers conducting advanced research for the last 10 years (Advanced). Prof. Ürey’s grant is the first ERC Ad- vanced grant received from Turkey in the field of engineering. OML 4th JAM SESSION

Past and present OML members got together for another jam session on January 2nd. An afternoon session with presentations by some of the past and present members of the OML ended with the traditional dinner & entertainment in Barınak restaurant. 4th JAM SESSION’s program was as follows.

OML has been selected to receive the International 3D Society’s “New Product

Award” for its entry of “Portable

3D Laser Projector”. The International 3D Society Consortium was formed in 2008 with the mission to speed the commercialization of 3D into homes worldwide and provide the best possible viewing experience by facilitating the development of standards, road-maps and education for the entire 3D industry. On September 18, 2013, OML came together with other award winners at a special luncheon held at Paramount Pictures Studios, Hollywood. The awarded research is made possible through collaboration between our 3D research team and Microvision Inc: Kaan Akşit, Osman Eldeş, Selvan Viswanathan, Mark Freeman, and Hakan Ürey. The award was delivered for Optical Microsystems Laboratory by our valued alumni Ahmet F. Coskun. Readers should note that OML has been highly engaged with 3D research since last six to seven years, which strengthen with collaborations with local and international players from industry and academia.Homepage of the International 3D Society: http://www.international3dsociety.com/

Kuantag Company has been established in the scope of a project developed by OPET Inc., Inventram Inc., and Koç University collaboration, as an OPET Group Company with the contribution of Koc Holding and Ozturk Group of Companies and together with the shares of Koc University Faculty members participating in the project. Its aim is to research and develop identification, trailing and recording systems for automotive applications. The optics-electronics studies have been conducted in Optic Microsystems Laboratory directed by Prof. Hakan Ürey and material science studies have been conducted in Polymer and Nanomaterials Research Laboratory directed by Assoc. Prof. Funda Yağcı Acar. In Optic Microsystems Laboratory, we are conducting the optical and

electronical studies with the participation of post-doctoral fellow Fehmi Çivitci and graduate student Başarbatu Can and OML’s research technician Selim Ölçer.With the contribution of post-doctoral fellow Dr. Pınar Dağtepe and graduate students İbrahim Hocalıoğlu and Emek Durmuşoğlu. The Polymer and Nanomaterials Research Laboratory conducts research related to the synthesis of the nanomaterials that will be detected with the developed sensor.Last year a patent application about the optical sensor structure and nanomaterials using this sensor structure has been submitted to the European Patent Office. All the claims have been accepted and are ready for licensing. This patent will be public in the following months.

Furthermore, another patent for the designed fiber optic sensor structure has been prepared and the application will be send to the European Patent Office in the coming month. The next patent application on OML’s agenda is a method for sensitive detection of nanomaterials using fiber optical sensor in harsh environments. Similarly the Nanomaterial synthesis group prepares a patent application for developed nanomaterials.

The aim of the project is to design handheld Point-of-Care devices for blood coagulation time measurements. Blood coagulation time measurements have to be carried out periodically for patients under anticoagulant medication (such as warfarin) to adjust the dosage. The device will utilize single-use, disposable cartridges. Novel, MEMS cantilever based biosensor technology is used. Thanks to the remote magnetic actuation and optical read-out no electrical connection between the cartridge and reader is required. The project is being supported by Tubitak and Inventram with a 1 milion TRY grant since October 2013.

O M L researchers Hazal Er and Kaan Akşit proposed a non-invasive liquid deterioration technique based on speckle photography. Based on the correlation between spoilage and speckle contrast the system determines whether the

milk is deteriorated or not. In “Bir Fikrin mi Var?” competition, their project has been qualified to the finals in February 2014 and awarded with 30.000 TL by KOSGEB. “Intelligent Network” project received as the best project in this competition.

OML members have attended the Eurasia Cycling Trip a parallel amateur event of the professional Presidential Cycling Tour 2013. The trip starts from the Yahya Kemal Park in Beşiktaş Barbaros Avenue, passes through the Bosphorus Bridge, and finishes at Caddebostan Parkı.
