A MESSAGE FROM RABBI STRAUCHLER

The greatest thing in the world is to know how to

belong to oneself.

― Michel de Montaigne (1533-1592)

לבבו ך ב תבר את וה ה הז י האל בר מעו את־ד ה בש והיען ספות ך למ ל י א ב רות ל שר י ב י כ היה־ל ר שלום י אמ ל

ה׃ א הרוה את־הצמ

When such a one hears the words of these sanctions, he may fancy himself immune, thinking,

“I shall be safe, though I follow my own willful heart”—to the utter ruin of moist and dry alike. (Devarim 29:18) Rav Avraham Ibn Ezra explains the connection between י היה־ל “ -שלום י I shall be safe” - and ך ל י א ב רות ל שר שאלך בשרירות לבי אף I follow my own heart” - as“ –ב ”.I shall be safe despite the fact that I follow my own heart“ –על פי

The Netziv explains that the connection is one of conscientious refusal - בחוזק With a stubborn“ –לבבי שלא לירא מאלות הברית אחר שאינני מקבלם עלי מתחלה

heart - with no fear the covenantal curses - for I refuse to accept them from the start.” Regardless of these nuances, for classical Jewish commentaries, following one’s heart was not a good thing. For those who live in a society so influenced by Montaigne’s ideas, being true to oneself is the ultimate, if not the only, good. This discrepancy between the Torah and modern view swells to society as a whole in sefer shoftim (17:6; 21:25)

In those days there was no king in Yisra᾽el, but every man did that which was right in his own eyes.

No matter where we stand on the religious spectrum, to live today is to exist

between the communitarian vision of Torah and the individualism of Western

society. Much of our work during the Yamim Noraim work is to recalibrate our

proper position between these poles. In reflecting on this challenge, I encourage

you to ask yourself, “Where does the greatest threat to my well-being lie – is it

RINAT ROUNDUP The new year begins this week and, reflecting on the past year, I feel very fortunate to be a part of the Rinat community. This has been an unusual year, but our community members have found ways to be there for one another, in both good times and challenging ones. Novel ways to safely share both Smachot and Shivas were developed, and it was humbling to see so many step in to help others as needs arose or to help the shul navigate the constantly changing COVID situation. Our Kehilla includes so many dedicated volunteers, particularly this year, and each uses their talents to contribute in a different way.

This summer, during Rinat’s first Rabbinic transition, we enjoyed a beautiful Shabbat celebrating the Adlers’ extraordinary contributions, followed by an exciting inaugural Shabbat welcoming the Strauchlers and ushering in a new era at Rinat. Hodu L’Hashem Ki Tov Ki L'olam Chasdo. I look forward to another year of learning together and growing together with the guidance of our wonderful Rabbinic team as our shul goes Michayil El Chayil. As we prepare for Rosh Hashana, I really appreciate the opportunity to daven together. Last year, so many of us were not sitting anywhere near our Makom Kavua, and many davened alone at home. Last year, we may not have had the opportunity to hear all the Niggunim that have been a part of our Yamim Noraim davening for so many years. I appreciate how far we have come. G-d willing next year we will all be together the way we used to be. Baruch Hashem our shul continues to serve our community, and to that end the Yom Kippur Appeal is underway. We will be davening and saying U'teshuva, U'tefilla, U'tzedakkah over the Yamim Noraim, so please take a moment to contribute toward the appeal. It's one of the shul's biggest fundraisers, and the funds go directly toward maintaining the building and the shul’s services and programming. While some are able to give more than others, I'm asking each and every person to contribute at some level, with a goal of 100% participation. There is great value in togetherness, not only in attending minyanim and events, but also in supporting our shul. Please don't let this opportunity pass by. Wishing you a year of good health and happiness, and may all your Tefillot be answered L’tova, Bina
