It has been all engines go as we fire up for a 10 week school term full of exciting learning opportunities and programs. I am very proud of the results that our students are achieving with the support of our dedicated teaching team. You can support your child’s progress by staying in touch with their teachers throughout the Term. Parent/Teacher Interviews are scheduled for next week. Please come along and have those worthwhile conversations. Most importantly Assessment Calendars will be issued to parents at the Parent/Teacher Interviews. For parents who are unable to attend interviews, your assessment calendar will be sent home with your child the following day. These calendars will give you the information you need to encourage your child to meet assessment deadlines and improve their subject grades.

Spinifex Celebrates ANZAC Day
Spinifex State College commemorated ANZAC Day at both the Junior and Senior Campuses by holding dedicated parades. ANZAC Parades were led by school leaders from each campus. Lieutenant Joseph DiLegge represented the RSL at our school ceremonies this year in his capacity as Patrol Master when he delivered his address. Our school band was inspirational as they played “Abide with Me” and the New Zealand and Australian national anthems. Cody Burnett (Senior Campus) and Thomas Smith (Junior Campus) played a particularly rousing rendition of the Last Post and Revelry. Thank you to our Air Force Guards of Honour: Samuel Hartfiel, Mishmael Kelly, Jaxson Mullholland and Katie Stuart-Russell. I believe that our students have an enriched sense of pride in our history and a deep understanding of the values that shape our National identity. On Thursday, we had a number of Spinifex staff and students proudly attend the Dawn Service, Morning March and Service dressed in full uniform. Our Leaders looked fantastic dressed in their Akubra hats as they led our school with pride. Our Spinifex band students played ‘Abide by Me’ conducted by Mrs Susanne Pattison - which was excellent. Thank you to Jack Muller for reading the names of fallen soldiers and to our captains for laying the wreath with respect. As a Spinifex community we should all be proud of the time and commitment that we as a school gave on such an important occasion.

Term One Reports and Interviews
Student report cards were distributed to students yesterday. This report will give parents information about the progress that their child has made throughout the term. An important part of the process is the conversation between parents and teachers at our scheduled Parent/Teacher Interview afternoons. I encourage all parents to book times to speak with teachers about Term 1 results, and also about how we can work together to ensure we get the best possible results in Term 2. Parent Teacher interview dates will be Senior Campus – Tuesday 7th May and Junior Campus – Wednesday 8th May. Bookings are essential for interviews. Details on how to make bookings online were sent home with the report cards, and are also attached to this newsletter. If parents need assistance with this, please contact the school office. Reminder to Parents/Guardians: This is a perfect time to use The QParents app to download report cards. The QParents app can also be used to view and update attendance and student details, check timetables, invoices and view other important information. We highly recommend using QParents. If you are interested in downloading and using the app please contact our Offices to arrange access.

STEM Girl Power Camp
Congratulations to Jodie Jury on being selected to participate in the Department of Education’s 2019 STEM Girl Power Camp, last Term. Jodie along with a number of students from across the state travelled to Brisbane. Here they participated in a variety of festival events, innovative STEM workshops and networking opportunities with experts from science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields. This program develops students understanding of STEM and its importance to our society, as well as student’s leadership and communication skills. The 2019 STEM Ambassadors will now collaborate in their regions to plan and deliver a STEM event to celebrate National Science Week in August 2019 during Term 3, which aims to encourage others to consider STEM subjects and careers.

Year 12 PE Gregory Canoe Camp
Good luck to our 12 PE students and staff heading to the Gregory River on the 9th May. Students will improve their canoeing and water skills by participating in a moving water slalom course, identifying river features to break in and out of eddies, and will learn how to use passive and aggressive swimming to safely negotiate the river after a capsize. All of their performances will be filmed so that the students can then analyse and evaluate this footage to determine what Biomechanical or Psychological principles have affected their performance, as part of their assessment. It is sad to say that this camp will be the last of many and Spinifex would like to thank all staff who have been involved over the last 9 years that this camp has been running. Special thanks must go to Mr Ken Griffin, one of our parents, who has given up his time to attend many camps and assist staff and students. Students and staff will no doubt have a great time, and we look forward to sharing photos and experiences once we return.

Indigenous Inspiration
Year 8 Visual Art Students have started a new body of work in 2019 inspired by Indigenous artist Sally Morgan. Students are painting a canvas board featuring a place which is special to them. Throughout the term they experiment with different techniques and styles used by Indigenous artists such as aerial perspective, x-ray, dotting and symbols. While all students are able to participate in art making, the fees levied for this subject ensure your child is able to bring their work home. Fees can be paid to the front office. Some of the canvas boards created to date:

Mr. Farnsworth - Junior Campus English Teacher Q: “Which team do you think will win?” A: “Julius, but I hope for Leichhardt to win.” Q: “What was your favourite event?” A: “200m.”

In good school spirit, many people were dressed in their team colours. A few eager people dressed as mascots for their teams.
Three records were broken on the day all by Year 7 students. Sam Wirth broke the 12 years boys discus record with a mighty 21m throw. Gorethy David broke two race records the first in the 12 years girls 100m race record with 15.55 secs, smashing the previous record of 15.79 secs. The second was in the 12 years girls 200m race record with a new time of 32.48 secs beating the previous record of 32.90 secs. Both the canteen and Taipans had delicious food on sale and they both did a great job feeding the hungry students. The sausage sizzle was a fundraising event for the Taipans mixed team as they are travelling to Townsville this year for the North Queensland All Schools Touch Football championship. They sold out of everything and everyone was very supportive The age champions were: 13 years girls – Damarish Robin; 13 years boys – Scott Egan; 14 years girls – Chelsea Page; 14 years boys – Kyle Bartolo; 15 years girls – Shyniah Heness; 15 years boys – Josh Gilles; 16 years girls – Keili Eggmolesse; 16 years boys – Bailey Cliff; 17+ years girls – Shonikqua Spain; 17+ years boys – Liam Mayers.
Congratulations to Rifle House, they were the winning house on the day.
“Thank you to Kadence Anderson who helped take these amazing photos.” -Jasmine Munday

GIRLS FOR MINING with GLENCORE
ABOUT THE PROGRAMCOMMENCEMENT The program will commence during Term 2 and finish at the end of Term 4.
STRUCTUREMentors and mentees will be provided with a basic structure, and some support tools and activities. Mentees will be matched with a mentor based on career ambitions and personal and goals. The mentor / mentee relationship is a dynamic one, so the relationship will naturally grow between you and your mentor.
Girls for Mining Mentoring Program
The Glencore Girls for Mining Mentoring Program is the first
of its kind in north Queensland.
The program was created in response to an identified
demand for formal mentoring of female students.
Many students have little or no experience of working in the
real world. Being mentored by an experienced professional
offers an invaluable opportunity to gain insights into
organisational and professional life and helps them plan their
future career. Students will be encouraged
through a semi-structured Mentor Program to seek
information and guidance from their mentor about their career
direction and future employment goals.
The mentor will share their knowledge and experience,
provide guidance and take an active interest in the career development needs of the student, creating a mutual
benefit in each other’s personal and professional development.
FUNCTIONSThere will be three foundation events held throughout the program: “Program Launch” – Term 2; “Networking Function” – Term 3; and “End Program Celebration” – Term 4. This year's program also brings potential for more functions and events.
Do you want access to a personal mentor who is motivated, driven and ready to inspire and
encourage you? BECOME A MENTEE.
