Recognition Parade A key focus at Spinifex State College is creating a culture of success and recognition. Last week, we recognised students at our Junior Campus that have achieved success in Term 1. Recognition was awarded to students who achieved: 100% attendance, the standard of B or higher across all core subjects, the rating of excellence for effort and behaviour, most improved students in Literacy, Citizenship Awards and Principal’s Awards for the top students in each year level.

Teachers were also recognised for their efforts with the Above & Beyond Award, as voted by their colleagues went to Mrs Jodie Lobegeiger. High Five Award for teaching for being consistently friendly and supportive of students, as voted by students went to Mr Nick. High Five Award for non-teaching staff went to Miss Hannah Bridges. We are all about creating a culture of high achievement and building students thirst for success early in their high school journey, through the recognition of student achievements we are creating that culture.

Sorry Day and Reconciliation Week Celebrations Senior Campus held a Sorry Day Parade on Thursday 23rd of May as a part of National Reconciliation Week. We were honoured to have representatives from DATSIP and MOB FM at our parade and moved by the family stories that Aunty Valerie Craigie shared with us about her relatives who were a part of the stolen generation. Following the parade, DATSIP and MOB FM stayed at school for lunch. They provided music, bacon, egg and sausage sandwiches and a cake cutting ceremony for everyone to enjoy.

Spinifex Junior held their Sorry Day parade on Monday morning to remember and recognise the Stolen Generation. Sorry Day is a time to reflect on the many historical mistreatments that Australia’s First People experienced. Thank you to Year 7 Indigenous Captain Cooper Wyld-Hill for giving the acknowledgement to country, Junior Campus Captain Natasha Connelly for sharing her Nan Pearl Connelly’s story with us and to Olive Bird for lighting a candle as we all reflect on the past and move on to a brighter inclusive future.

Spinifex vs GSCC Round 1 Tri Series It seemed like half the town turned up to watch the first of the tri series rugby league games between Spinifex and GSCC last Thursday. The cheering was deafening at times – particularly when Haydn Andrews used his blistering pace to score a full length of the field try to bring the crowd to its feet. All three games were played with courage, determination and good sportsmanship.

So many community members have expressed their support for this event and appreciate that we are giving our young people the opportunity to be a part of something worthwhile and giving our students the opportunity to shine doing what they love. Thank you to Miss Emily Craven, Miss Ashlee Mitchell and our HPE team for playing a huge part in organising this event. We look forward the next game which will be Round 2 on today the 31st of May. Kick off is at 3.45pm at the Alec Inch Oval.

Interschool Athletics Carnival

Last Friday our students competed in the district athletics carnival with Good Shepherd. It was a fantastic day for all with many outstanding athletics performances displayed. Even though spinifex just missed out on winning the overall trophy by about 30 points, we came home with a swag of age champion medals. Congratulations to the following students for receiving age champion for their age group:

12 years – Scott Egan 14 years – Amarah Body 16 years – Bailey Cliff and Keili Eggmolesse 17 years – Raylyn Lita and Liam Mayers

New School Winter Uniforms I thank parents for supporting our school uniform policy. As we enter the cooler months, parents are reminded that new school jackets ($65ea) and tracksuit pants ($55ea) are available for purchase from the tuckshops on both campuses.

It is not acceptable for students to attend school with multi-coloured jumpers. Research tells us that students who dress in uniform each day are more likely to be in a frame of mind to engage effectively in the learning program of the school.

P&C Meeting – Senior Campus The next P&C meeting will be held on Wednesday the 19th of June, in the Senior Campus Library, commencing at 7pm. All parents, carers and community members are welcome.

The Barefoot Investor The Junior Campus Library has 2 copies of “The barefoot investor for families” and 5 copies of “The barefoot investor” available for borrowing. If you would like a copy we can organise for them to be borrowed on your child’s account and sent home with them.

The barefoot investor for families: the only kids’ money guide you’ll ever need There are only ten things every kid needs to know about money, and you can teach them over dinner, once a week. It's that simple. Scott's mission is to make sure your kids are financially strong so they never, ever get sucked into the traps that middle-aged bankers have devised to rob them of their money and their confidence. Scott lays out ten money milestones kids need to have nailed before they leave home, and it's all structured around one family 'money meal' each week (so roughly 20 minutes). Includes tailor-made lessons for each age group.

Ngawa Excursion Ngawa students: Akira, Kathleen, Charlotte and Cooper went on an excursion to Mob FM on Wednesday 22nd May. They recorded an advertisement to invite community members to the Ngawa Morning Tea which is held on Monday the 3rd of June at Junior campus.

Broadcasters Jacob and Tutu educated students on how to project their voices and how to get their listeners attention. Students had a lot of fun (and nerves) and are looking forward to hearing voices broadcasted across Mt Isa. Tune into 100.9 FM for the 8am or 2:30pm segment to hear their awesome advertisement.

Earth Science Trip to Richmond

On Friday the 17th of May, students in Year 12 Earth Science were up early, ready to head out to Richmond for the 2019 Fossicking Field Trip. After the short 5hr drive to get out there, students were very excited to be off the bus and able to explore the Kronosaurus Korner Museum. Students were given a detailed tour by the museum’s curator, palaeontologist Michelle Johnston, and were also shown through the fossil processing lab. Students learnt how the fossils are prepared before being studied and going on display within the museum.

After a comfortable night’s sleep on the floor of a Richmond State School classroom, students were again up early to get ready to go fossicking for their own fossils. Students spent approximately 2 and a half hours at the fossicking site, with students finding a variety of fossils such as belemnites, pieces of turtle bone, shark teeth, fish jaw bones, shells and plenty of coprolite. Students then returned back to Mount Isa, with their fossils and the knowledge on how to process them over the next couple of weeks.

Final PE Canoe Camp Last Thursday 9th May, 12 eager Year 12 PE students embarked on the final Gregory River Canoe Camp. Bright and early, students arrived at Spinifex Senior to pack up their lives for four days and head to the crystal-clear Gregory River. With the help of Miss Ferguson driving the bus, Miss Curd towing the canoes and Mr Ken Griffin hauling our personal items, it was time to venture north. Unfortunately, due to the poor condition of the “short route” meant we had to travel the long way. Nevertheless, all students had more than enough music and UE Booms battery life to last weeks. After a short rest stop at Burke & Wills, we arrived at Mellish Park, 30

kilometres south of Gregory Downs. As soon as we stepped off the bus, we hit the ground running. Setting up the camp was a breeze and was followed by setting up, practicing and planning for the slalom course. In their canoeing pairs, students had to decipher the quickest and easiest way to paddle and turn the canoe through 5 challenging gates in order to be timed the fastest of the class. The slalom course deemed difficult at first but after many practice runs, students flew through the time trials.

Shout out to Charlee Larkin and Mikayla Colyer-Long for winning the time trials with a time of 58secs. After a day and half focusing on the slalom course, we turned our attention to the notorious “Wipeout Bend”. Students were required to paddle down Wipeout Bend without capsizing and safely break in to the eddy at the end of the moving water. All sorts of emotions were running through students’ minds, but we had nothing to worry about as we successively tackled Wipeout with only one pair “wiping out”. Before we packed

away the canoes for the very last time, students and staff paddled “Pandanus Alley”, a tight part of the Gregory River. With all the skills we had learnt, we put them to the test but some of us capsized while others jumped out of the canoe to avoid spiders and the prickly Pandanus. This experience of paddling Pandanus Alley has never been completed on a camp but we were lucky enough to give it a crack as we were the final group to ever participate in this camp. Off the water, students and staff enjoyed many shenanigans around the fire and experienced sleeping under the beauty of the stars. All students put in 110% in to their canoeing and all their work has paid off. A big thank you to Ken Griffin and Alison Whitehead who joined us on the journey as well as Miss Ferguson and Ms Curd for organising and running such a wonderful camp. We will miss the Gregory River Canoe Camps, but we are grateful we could experience it all!

2019 Inaugural Remote HASS/History Teachers’ Conference On the 17th and 18th of May, Spinifex State College in conjunction with Queensland History Teachers’ Association (QHTA) hosted the 2019 Inaugural Remote HASS/History Teachers’ Conference. Starting on the Friday, our guest presenters – Dr Brian Hoepper, Kathleen Gordon and Aunty Joan McKay – worked with local school students and teachers, improving their historical knowledge and skills.

Kathleen, our HASS expert, ran four demonstration lessons at local primary schools – Sunset, Barkly, Central and Happy Valley – focusing on Questioning.

120 primary school students, with the help of Kathleen, Aunty Joan and their teachers, posed and developed historical questions about a primary source.

Brian, our History expert, ran two student seminars at the senior campus for both Spinifex State College and Good Shepherd Catholic College students. The focus of these sessions – Nazi Germany and Terrorism – was highly engaging and relevant for students. One Good Shepherd student remarked the sessions reminded him that, “no matter where you come from you can make a difference in this world.” Other students are still reflecting upon the profound ideas raised. Moving forward to Saturday, teachers from all over the region came together in workshops run by Brian, Kathleen and Aunty Joan who shared their knowledge, experience and source material with us all. The final session of the day was a resource sharing session, connecting colleagues from different schools.

A big thank you to the QHTA and all the teachers, students and staff who helped with this initiative.
