“Service Information Harmonization Program”
• WhatProgram established to harmonize service information
• WhyService engineers deal with systems of all imaging systems modalities; not just only one as it was in the past
• HowOne work stream was defined as “STE – Simplified Technical English”
12

STE – Definition
“Simplified English is the original name of a controlled language historically developed for aerospace industry maintenance manuals. It offers a carefully limited and standardized subset of English. It is now officially known under its trademarked name as Simplified Technical English (STE).” (source: wikipedia.org)
13

STE – Advantages
• Reduce ambiguity• Improve acuteness of technical documentation, especially when it
comes to instructions• Content easier to understand for non-native speakers• Quicker, simpler and more cost-effective translations• Facilitate computer-aided translations and machine translations
14
Philiips Healthcare, 20 November 2012, Acrolinx
STE – the Philips way
• We don’t use “pure” STE• It’s rather “inspired by STE”• Every technical writer of service information attended an STE training • Non-native technical writers are supported by AcrolinxIQ when creating
content

Acrolinx at Philips
• 2 tools (AcrolinxIQ and “Mr. X”) were tested for 6–8 weeks by a group of technical writers
• Based on defined criteria the 2 tools were evaluated• AcrolinxIQ declared the winner – unanimously• Plan to implement created• 1st phase of the project had 4 Business Innovation Units
– Interventional X-Ray (Best/NL)– Nuclear Medicine (San José + Cleveland / USA)– Diagnostic X-Ray (Hamburg/DE)– Generators, Tubes and Components (Hamburg/DE)
16
Philiips Healthcare, 20 November 2012, Acrolinx
Implementation of AcrolinxIQ
• Define the style + grammar rules that should be used• Align the rules with existing “Philips Healthcare Style Guide”• Create initial terminology lists• A Domain “STE” was created in AcrolinxIQ
– Contains preferred and deprecated words from STE
17
Philiips Healthcare, 20 November 2012, Acrolinx
Implementation of AcrolinxIQ
• 2nd phase of the project• 4 more Business Innovation Units
– Ultrasound (Bothell/USA)– Magnetic Resonance Imaging (Best/NL)– Ambient Experience (Best/NL)– IS Customer Services Programs (Best/NL)
• Creation of an IS-wide terminology list
18
Philiips Healthcare, 20 November 2012, Acrolinx
Current Situation
• Test and production servers running Windows (Win7 + Win2003)• Plug-ins for
– MS Word– XMetaL (with CMS Schema ST4)– FrameMaker
• Desktop Batch Checker also used• Terminology stored in external Oracle DB
– 12 Domains– ~7,700 terms (2,500 “deprecated”, 4,700 “preferred”)
• 50 “named user” + 8 “concurrent user” licenses• ~100 users registered
