Blog four: Element Three: Teachers plan, Assess and Report for Effective Learning

Aspect: Element 3.1.7: Providing feedback to students: Give helpful and timely oral and written feedback to students (NSW Institute of Teachers, 2010).

Evidence One: Feedback given back to the students in a timely manner (NSW Institute of Teachers, 2010).

As Miller,Linn and Gronlund (2009) argue teacher feedback allows for expected learning outcomes to be stated to students explicitly. I made sure I provided explicit teacher feedback straight away to the students (NSW Institute of Teachers, 2010). This meant they were able to improve their writing for their final preliminary exam. Therefore timely written feedback allows for effective learning.

Evidence Two: Monitoring of students progress and record keeping (Giving students effective feedback, by planning this into the lesson (NSW Institute of Teachers, 2010). . Aspect 3.1.8: Demonstrates knowledge and rationale for keeping accurate and reliable records to monitor student’s progress (NSW Institute of Teachers, 2010).

Teaching Strategies / Learning Experiences:(How it is taught)Write detailed steps showing what the teacher (T) will do and what students (Ss) will do.

1-Hand back homework tasks and explain to the students what they needed to do, to go better next time. Read out 8/8 answers and put emphasis on how not enough mention was made about the risks.

2-Give students a break as they just completed examination, show the students, the results from homework task and how they can improve.

Jinrui and Roger (2011) comment on effective teacher feedback and how feedback can assist students with their academic writing. I wanted to make sure my feedback was explicit and helpful (NSW Institute of Teachers, 2010), so it could assist my students with their academic writing as stated by Jinrui and Roger (2010).

Lesson plan shows evidence of the teacher planning for effective learning, based on accurate records of students progress (NSW Institute of Teachers, 2010).

Miller,Linn and Gronlund (2009) state, Grading and reporting of student progress can be quite frustrating if not reported properly. A well developed grading system assisted me in being able to develop an accurate record of my students and their progress.
