ST HILDA’S ASHFORD

PARISH EUCHARISTTHE NINETEENTH SUNDAY

AFTER TRINITY

Introit Hymn – All stand as the choir and ministers enter the church

Amazing grace! How sweet the soundthat saved a wretch like me.I once was lost, but now am found;was blind, but now I see.'Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, and grace my fears relieved. How precious did that grace appearthe hour I first believed.Through many dangers, toils and snaresI have already come.'Tis grace has brought me safe thus far,and grace will lead me home. The Lord has promised good to me,his word my hope secures;he will my shield and portion beas long as life endures.Yes, when this flesh and heart shall fail, and mortal life shall cease,I shall possess, within the veila life of joy and peace.

When we’ve been there a thousand years, bright shining as the sun,we’ve no less days to sing God’s praisethan when we first begun.

John Newton (1779)

Old Testament Reading – Joel 2:23-3223 O children of Zion, be glad   and rejoice in the Lord your God;for he has given the early rain for your vindication,   he has poured down for you abundant rain,   the early and the later rain, as before.24 The threshing-floors shall be full of grain,   the vats shall overflow with wine and oil.

25 I will repay you for the years   that the swarming locust has eaten, the hopper, the destroyer, and the cutter,   my great army, which I sent against you.

26 You shall eat in plenty and be satisfied,   and praise the name of the Lord your God,   who has dealt wondrously with you. And my people shall never again be put to shame.27 You shall know that I am in the midst of Israel,   and that I, the Lord, am your God and there is no other. And my people shall never again   be put to shame.

28 Then afterwards   I will pour out my spirit on all flesh;your sons and your daughters shall prophesy,   your old men shall dream dreams,   and your young men shall see visions.29 Even on the male and female slaves,   in those days, I will pour out my spirit.30 I will show portents in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and columns of smoke. 31The sun shall be turned to darkness, and the moon to blood, before the great and terrible day of the Lord comes. 32Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved; for in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there

shall be those who escape, as the Lord has said, and among the survivors shall be those whom the Lord calls.

At the end the reader saysThis is the word of the Lord.

All Thanks be to God.New Testament Reading – 2 Timothy 4:6-8, 16-18

6 As for me, I am already being poured out as a libation, and the time of my departure has come. 7 I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 8 From now on there is reserved for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will give me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have longed for his appearing.

16 At my first defence no one came to my support, but all deserted me. May it not be counted against them! 17 But the Lord stood by me and gave me strength, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. So I was rescued from the lion’s mouth. 18 The Lord will rescue me from every evil attack and save me for his heavenly kingdom. To him be the glory forever and ever. Amen.

At the end the reader says This is the word of the Lord.

All Thanks be to God.Gradual Hymn – All Stand

My song is love unknown,my Saviour’s love to me,love to the loveless shown, that they might lovely be.O who am I, that for my sakemy Lord should takefrail flesh, and die?

He came from his blest throne, salvation to bestow:but men cared not, and nonethe longed-for Christ would know. But o, my Friend, my Friend indeed, who at my need his life did spend!

Sometimes they strew his way,and his sweet praises sing;resounding all the dayhosannas to their King. Then “Crucify!” is all their breath, and for his death they thirst and cry.

They rise, and needs will havemy dear Lord sent away;a murderer they save, the Prince of Life they slay.Yet cheerful he to suffering goes, that he his foes from thence might free.

Here might I stay and sing,no story so divine;never was love, dear King, never was grief like thine! This is my Friend, in whose sweet praiseI all my days could gladly spend.

Samuel Crossman (1624-1683)

Gospel Reading – Luke 18:9-14When the Gospel is announced the reader says Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Luke.

All Glory to you, O Lord.9 [Jesus] also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous and regarded others with contempt: 10 “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. 11 The Pharisee, standing by himself, was praying thus, ‘God, I thank you that I am not like other people: thieves, rogues, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. 12 I fast twice a week; I give a tenth of all my income.’ 13 But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even look up to heaven, but was beating his breast and saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’ 14 I tell you, this man went down to his home justified rather than the other; for all who exalt themselves will be humbled, but all who humble themselves will be exalted.”

This is the Gospel of the Lord. All Praise to you, O Christ.

The Sermon – All sit

The Creed – All Stand

Let us declare our faith in God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

All I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried;he descended to the dead.On the third day he rose again;he ascended into heaven,he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.Amen.

Prayers of Intercession – We sit or kneelThe prayers end with the following:

Merciful FatherAll accept these prayers

for the sake of your Son,our Saviour Jesus Christ.Amen.

THE LITURGY OF THE SACRAMENTThe Peace – All stand

Blessed are the peacemakers:they shall be called the children of God.We meet in the name of Christ and share his peace. The peace of the Lord be always with you

All and also with you.Let us offer one another a sign of peace. All may exchange a sign of peace.

Offertory Hymn

And can it be that I should gainAn int'rest in the Savior's blood?Died He for me, who caused His pain? For me, who Him to death pursued?Amazing love! how can it beThat Thou, my God, should die for me?Refrain:Amazing love! how can it be that Thou,

my God, should die for me!

'Tis mystery all! Th'Immortal dies:Who can explore His strange design? In vain the first-born seraph triesTo sound the depths of love divine!'Tis mercy all! Let earth adore,Let angel minds inquire no more.

He left His Father's throne above,So free, so infinite his grace;Emptied Himself of all but love,And bled for Adam's helpless race;'Tis mercy all, immense and free; For, O my God, it found out me.

Long my imprisoned spirit layFast bound in sin and nature's night;Thine eye diffused a quick'ning ray,I woke, the dungeon flamed with light; My chains fell off, my heart was free;I rose, went forth and followed Thee.

No condemnation now I dread;Jesus, and all in Him is mine!Alive in Him, my living Head,And clothed in righteousness divine,Bold I approach the eternal throne,And claim the crown, through Christ my own.

Charles Wesley (1738)

And after allEverything I once held dearJust proved to be so vain.To lose it all, and find a Friend who’s always nearCould only be my gain,And when I think of what You’ve done for me,To bring me to the Father’s side:

Unashamed and unafraid I will choose to wear your name,In a world so full of hateI will always live Your way.

Could it be That You should put on human flesh,Your glory laid aside?Bruised for me,Majesty upon the cross,Forsaken and despised. When I think of what it cost for You,To bring me to the Father’s side.

Unashamed and unafraid I will choose to wear your name,In a world so full of hateI will always live Your way.Unashamed and unafraid,I will love You all my days,I don’t care what people say,I’m unashamed and unafraid.

I know some will say it is foolishness:You can’t make a blind man see.But I know that there is power in the crossTo save those who believe.

Paul Oakley (2001) Thankyou Music

The gifts of the people are gathered and presented. The table is prepared, and bread and wine are placed upon it.

Yours, Lord, is the greatness, the power, the glory, the splendour, and the majesty;for everything in heaven and on earth is yours.

All All things come from you,and of your own do we give you.

Eucharistic Prayer The Lord be with you

All and also with youLift up your hearts.

All We lift them to the Lord.Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

All It is right to give thanks and praise.Father, you made the world and love your creation. You gave your Son Jesus Christ to be our Saviour. His dying and rising have set us free from sin and death. And so we gladly thank you, with saints and angels praising you, and singing:

All Holy, holy, holy Lord,God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory.Hosanna in the highest.Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.Hosanna in the highest.

We praise and bless you, loving Father, through Jesus Christ, our Lord;and as we obey his command, send your Holy Spirit, that broken bread and wine outpouredmay be for us the body and blood of your dear Son.

On the night before he died he had supper with his friendsand, taking bread, he praised you.He broke the bread, gave it to them and said:Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you;do this in remembrance of me.

When supper was ended he took the cup of wine.Again he praised you, gave it to them and said:Drink this, all of you;

this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.

So, Father, we remember all that Jesus did,in him we plead with confidence his sacrificemade once for all upon the cross.

Bringing before you the bread of life and cup of salvation,we proclaim his death and resurrectionuntil he comes in glory.

Great is the mystery of faith:All Christ has died:

Christ is risen:Christ will come again.

Lord of all life, help us to work together for that daywhen your kingdom comesand justice and mercy will be seen in all the earth.

Look with favour on your people, gather us in your loving armsand bring us with Hilda and all the saintsto feast at your table in heaven.

Through Christ, and with Christ, and in Christ,in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, O loving Father, for ever and ever.

All Amen.

The Lord’s PrayerLet us pray with confidence as our Saviour taught us:

All Our Father, who art in heaven,hallowed be thy name;

thy kingdom come;thy will be done;on earth as it is in heaven.Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses,as we forgive those who trespass against us.And lead us not into temptation;but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever.Amen.

Breaking of the BreadThe president breaks the consecrated bread.

We break this breadto share in the body of Christ.

All Though we are many, we are one body, because we all share in one bread.

Agnus DeiLamb of God,you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us.Lamb of God,you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us.Lamb of God,you take away the sin of the world, grant us peace.

The president and people receive communion. A Hymn is sung during the distribution of the Holy Communion

Breathe on me, breath of God,fill me with life anew, that I may love what thou dost love, and do as you wouldst do.Breathe on me, breath of God,until my heart is pure, until with thee I will one will,to do and to endure.Breathe on me, breath of God,till I am wholly thine, until this earthly part of meglows with the fire divine.Breathe on me, breath of God;so shall I never die,but live with thee the perfect lifeof thine eternity.

THE DISMISSALBlessing

God of all grace, your Son Jesus Christ fed the hungrywith the bread of lifeand the word of his kingdom:renew your people with your heavenly grace, and in all our weaknesssustain us by your true and living bread;who is alive and reigns, now and for ever.

All Amen.Go in peace to love and serve the Lord.

All In the name of Christ. Amen

Final Hymn

For all the saints who from their labours rest, who thee by faith before the world confest, thy name, O Jesu, be for ever blest.Alleluia!

Thou wast their rock, their fortress, and their might;thou, Lord, their captain in the well-fought fight;thou, in the darkness drear their one true light.

O blest communion, fellowship divine,we feebly struggle, they in glory shine;yet all are one in thee, for all are thine.

And when the fight is fierce, the warfare long, steals on the ear the distant triumph song, and hearts are brave again, and arms are strong.

But lo! there breaks a yet more glorious day;the saints triumphant rise in bright array;the King of glory passes on his way.

From earth's wide bounds, from ocean's farthest coast, through gates of pearl streams in the countless host, singing to Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

William Walsham How (1864)
