Reflections:

“If you want to judge how well a person understands Christianity, find out how much he makes of the thought of being God’s child and having God as his Father.  If this is not the thought that prompts and controls his worship and prayers and whole outlook on life, it means that he does not understand Christianity very well at all.”  - J.I. Packer

“The truth of God the Father’s adoption of me causes me to be overwhelmed with his love.  The fact that the Father would choose me as a part of his family is beyond my comprehension.  My earthly family has no choice.  I am a part of them; they must accept the good and bad in me simply because I was born into their family.  God, however, who knows all the good and bad in me, has chosen me to be a part of his family and has offered me the great riches that are his.  Simply the thought of adoption overwhelms me and brings me to my knees in thanksgiving.”  Robert Peterson, relating a testimonial from a friend

If you are visiting us, please sign and indicate that in the attendance booklet during the offering so that we can properly thank you for coming. Our service liturgy is inspired by the story of God’s Word and is designed to introduce you to, or renew you in, the good news of Jesus Christ. During the service. Indicates when the congregation stands, and when we are seated. Ushers will be happy to provide hearing-assisted headsets or large-print editions of the bulletin for those who need it. Please silence your cellular phone/mobile device.

His Creation

Prelude Sam Broomell

Greeting

Call to Worship 1 John 3:1 (NIV)

See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!

Profession of Faith: Westminster Larger Catechism #74

Q. What is adoption?

A. Adoption is an act of the free grace of God, in and for his only Son Jesus Christ, whereby all those that are justified are received into the number of his children, have his name put upon them, the Spirit of his Son given to them, are under his fatherly care and dispensations, admitted to all the liberties and privileges of the sons of God, made heirs of all the promises, and fellow-heirs with Christ in glory.

Father, Long Before Creation (Johnson, Osenga)Verse 1Father, long before creationThou hadst chosen us in love,And that love so deep, so moving,Draws us close to Christ above.Still it keeps us, still it keeps us.Firmly fixed in Christ alone.

Verse 2Though the world may change its fashionYet our God is e’er the same; His compassion and His covenantThrough all ages will remain.God’s own children, God’s own childrenMust forever praise His name.

Verse 3God’s compassion is my story,Is my boasting all the day;Mercy free and never failingMoves my will, directs my way.God so loved us, God so loved usThat His only Son He gave.

Verse 4Loving Father now before TheeWe will ever praise Thy love,And our songs will sound unceasingTil we reach our home above,Giving glory, giving gloryTo our God and to the Lamb;Giving glory, giving gloryTo our God and to the Lamb.

Oh Love That Will Not Let Me Go (Matheson)

Verse 1O Love that will not let me go,I rest my weary soul in thee;I give thee back the life I owe,That in thine ocean depths its flowMay richer, fuller be.

Verse 2O light that followest all my way,I yield my flickering torch to thee;My heart restores its borrowed ray,That in thy sunshine’s blaze its dayMay brighter, fairer be.

Verse 3O Joy that sleekest me through pain,I cannot close my heart to thee;I trace the rainbow through the rain,And feel the promise is not vain,That morn shall tearless be.

Verse 4O Cross that liftest up my head,I dare not ask to fly from thee;I lay in dust life’s glory dead,And from the ground there blossoms redLife that shall endless be.

Our FallConfession of Sin 1 John 3:2-9 (ESV)

2 Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. 3 And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure. 4 Everyone who makes a practice of sinning also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness. 5 You know that he appeared in order to take away sins, and in him there is no sin. 6 No one who abides in him keeps on sinning; no one who keeps on sinning has either seen him or known him.

7 Little children, let no one deceive you. Whoever practices righteousness is righteous, as he is righteous. 8 Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil. 9 No one born of God makes a practice of sinning, for God’s seed abides in him; and he cannot keep on sinning, because he has been born of God.

Corporate Prayer of ConfessionAlmighty God, we confess we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed; we have not loved you with all of our heart, soul, mind, and strength; we have not loved our neighbor as ourselves. Restore to us the joy of your salvation, that we might practice your ways and demonstrate your righteousness to the world. In Jesus name, Amen.

Assurance of Pardon: 1 John 4:9-10 (NIV) 9 This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. 10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.

Hymn of Response: Redeemed, How I Love to Proclaim It! Trinity Hymnal #701

Offering of Our Gifts 1 John 3:17-18 (NIV)17 If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? 18 Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.

Word of God – Ephesians 1:1-14 (ESV)

1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, To the saints who are in Ephesus, and are faithful in Christ Jesus: 2 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, 4 even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him. In love 5 he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will, 6 to the praise of his glorious grace, with which he has blessed us in the Beloved. 7 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, 8 which he lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight 9 making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ 10 as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth.

11 In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will, 12 so that we who were the first to hope in Christ might be to the praise of his glory. 13 In him you also, when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation, and believed in him, were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is the guarantee of our inheritance until we acquire possession of it, to the praise of his glory.

This sermon will be available in audio and video platform on our website – faithrpc.org/sermons.

Life Groups begin this Sunday - The new year for Life Groups will begin today. Life Groups are a great way to begin to live in the grace of Christ –developing true Christian fellowship, encouraging and challenging each other to apply the truths of God’s word in our lives, praying with and for each other.  Most groups meet every other Sunday evening – if you don’t have a group, please see either of Pastors Andy or Tim, or call the church office and we’ll connect you!

15

Help for moving the Perrins - The last of their belongings will show up at their house (10 W. Fifth St) at 6:30 p.m. on Sept 13 and 14, and 8:00 a.m. Sept 15 – again, please lend a hand on any of those days that you are free!

Nominations for Ruling Elders, Deacons, and Women’s Council – Nominations are now open for men to serve in the offices of Ruling Elder and Deacon, and also for women to serve on the Women’s Council (our advisory committee that reports to the Session). Forms are available in the lobby. They must be filled out, signed by the person nominating and the nominee, and turned into the church office or any member of Session no later than midnight, September 30. Please pray about whom you believe God is calling to serve in these roles.

For our current Ruling Elders, Jay Scott is ending his second term (and thus is not eligible for re-election this year – thanks to Jay for faithfully serving!). For the Deacons, Chris Sharp is ending his first term and can be re-nominated for a second. For the Women’s Council, which is now on a 3-year rotation cycle also, Lisa Lehman, Joann Rineer, and Kandi Sharp are ending their first terms and can be re-nominated.

Volunteer for the Missions Conference: The Missions Committee is preparing a Missions Weekend from Oct 5-7! Several of our missionaries are planning to come. We need some volunteers to host a missionary for dinner on Saturday, 10/6 and then invite friends afterwards to spend learning about their work. Please contact Bob Holt (717.806.7348 or [email protected].) Promotion Sunday – Is today - we invite all of our children and parents to stay in the Sanctuary after Sunday morning worship so that they can meet their new Sunday school teachers for the coming year. Parents will be welcome to join their kids in visiting their classrooms after meeting in the Sanctuary for a brief introduction.

Please bring a nice size covered dish to share and your own place settings. Drinks will be provided. The church kitchen will be opened at the back kitchen door at 10:00am if you would like your hot dish to be kept warm and transported over at lunch time.  After the picnic there will be games for the children. Please invite your friends and neighbors.

QPRC Residents – We will have a shuttle bus ready to take you over the park. Please let our office know you are interested or you can sign up at the Welcome Center.

Inclement weather: If there is bad weather that morning we will gather at the church at 10:30am instead for the service, luncheon, and games.

Family Night and Awana Starting September 26th! – Plans are underway to kick off our Awana program and Family night meal on September 26th. Please mark your calendars to join us at 6:00 PM for the meal, and Awana will start afterward at 6:30. After September 26th, we plan to continue doing the Wednesday Family Night Meal two times a month, every 1st and 3rd Wednesday of the month.  Awana will continue every week, generally following the Solanco School District Schedule - if there is no school for holidays or snow days, there will be no Awana.

If you’ve volunteered to help with either Awana or the Family Night meal, please don’t forget to attend the planning meeting today after Sunday School. This important meeting will help us put together our schedules and have a reasonable idea of how the night will flow, and who is responsible for what. If you have any questions, Please contact Tim Mindemann or Kathy Pickens.

MOPS – Our MOPS team is looking forward to starting a new year and we are looking for help for childcare! If you are willing to give up a Friday morning once or twice a month so that Moms in our community can enjoy fellowship and time in God’s Word together, please talk to Tim Mindemann or call our MOPS childcare coordinator, Susan Young 717-715-3216.
