Song
O come, O come, Immanuel,And ransom captive Israel,That mourns in lonely exile hereUntil the Son of God appear.
Rejoice! Rejoice! ImmanuelShall come to you, O Israel.
O come, O Wisdom from on high,who ordered all things mightily;
to us the path of knowledge showand teach us in its ways to go. Refrain
O come, O come, great Lord of might,Who to your tribes on Sinai's heightIn ancient times didst give the lawIn cloud and majesty, and awe.
Rejoice! Rejoice! ImmanuelShall come to you, O Israel.
O come, Thou Rod of Jesse, freeThine own from Satan’s tyranny; From depths of hell Thy people saveAnd give them victory o’er the grave.
O come, Thou Dayspring, come and cheerOur spirits by Thine advert here;Disperse the gloomy clouds of night,And death’s dark shadows put to flight.
O come, Thou Key of David, comeAnd open wide our heavenly home;Make safe the way that leads on high, And close the path to misery.
Tr. John N. Neale (1818-66)

cf Psalm 51Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who in his great mercy has promised forgiveness of sins to all those who with heartfelt repentance and true faith turn to him: have mercy on, you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to everlasting life, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
All Amen.
Collect
God for whom we watch and wait, you sent John the Baptist to prepare the way of your Son:give us courage to speak the truth,to hunger for justice, and to suffer for justice, and to suffer for the cause of right, with Jesus Christ our Lord.
All Amen.
The Liturgy of the Word
Matthew 11:2-11
2 John the Baptist, who was in prison, heard about all the things the Messiah was doing. So he sent his disciples to ask Jesus, 3 “Are you the Messiah we’ve been expecting,[a] or should we keep looking for someone else?”4 Jesus told them, “Go back to John and tell him what you have heard and seen— 5 the blind see, the lame walk, those with leprosy are cured, the deaf hear, the dead are raised to life, and the Good News is being preached to the poor.” 6 And he added, “God blesses those who do not fall away because of me.[b]”7 As John’s disciples were leaving, Jesus began talking about him to the crowds. “What kind of man did you go into the wilderness to see? Was he a weak reed, swayed by every breath of wind? 8 Or were you expecting to see a man dressed in expensive clothes? No, people with expensive clothes live in palaces. 9 Were you looking for a prophet? Yes, and
he is more than a prophet. 10 John is the man to whom the Scriptures refer when they say,‘Look, I am sending my messenger ahead of you,
and he will prepare your way before you.’[c]
11 “I tell you the truth, of all who have ever lived, none is greater than John the Baptist. Yet even the least person in the Kingdom of Heaven is greater than he is!
Nativity Play
Little donkey, little donkey,On the dusty road.Got to keep on plodding onwards,With your precious load.
Been a long time, little donkey,Through the winter’s night.Don’t give up now, little donkey,Bethlehem’s in sight.
Ring out those bells tonight,Bethlehem, Bethlehem.Follow that star tonight, Bethlehem, Bethlehem.
Little donkey, little donkey,Had a heavy day.Little donkey, carry MarySafely on her way.
Little donkey, little donkey,Journey's end is near. There are wise men waiting for a Sign to bring them here.
Do not falter, little donkey,There's a star ahead. It will guide you, little donkey,To a cattle shed

Children Away in a manger, no crib for a bed, The little Lord Jesus laid down His sweet head. The stars in the bright sky looked down where He lay, The little Lord Jesus asleep on the hay.
All The cattle are lowing, the baby awakes,But little Lord Jesus, no crying he makes.I love Thee, Lord Jesus! Look down from the sky,And stay by my side till morning is nigh.
All Be near me, Lord Jesus; I ask Thee to stayClose by me for ever, and love me, I pray.Bless all the dear children in thy tender care,And fit us for heaven, to live with thee there

Hark! the herald angels sing,Glory to the new-born King;Peace on earth, and mercy mild,God and sinners reconciled:Joyful, all ye nations, rise,Join the triumph of the skies,With the angelic hosts proclaim,Christ is born in Bethlehem:
Hark! the herald angels sing,Glory to the newborn King.
Charles Wesley (1707-88) and others
Silent night! Holy night!Heaven is near, earth is bright,Angel songs are heard aboveAs the Child of peace and loveSleeps in Mary's arms,Sleeps in Mary's arms.
Silent night! Holy night!Skies are clear, stars are bright,Now the shepherds wend their way,Homage to this Child to pay:He is Christ the Lord,He is Christ the Lord.
Silent night! Holy night!Christ is here, all is light,Shadows of the past are goneWith the advent of the Son,Born to save us all,Born to save us all.
