Continued from page 1“We had a terrible night be-

fore and we were just over it.”The band did enter however

and then it just rolled on from there and the guys are enjoy-ing every moment of it.

“Every gig has topped the last one, it’s just getting bigger and bigger,” Isaac says.

The band draws inspiration

for their music from many bands, including Metallica, Avenged Sevenfold and Bass-ist Tane Webb also adds a lot of local bands.

“Local bands like Devilskin and I am Giant that have done well,” he says.

“We are aspiring to be them, they show that a bit of hard work anyone can do it, they

all started like us.”In preparation for the Auck-

land event, the band is prac-ticing fi ve nights a week for about fi ve hours at a time, and they all say it will be worth it.

“The time goes so quick, we all enjoy it, it’s like having a second job,” says Drummer Sam Englert.

The band has been together

for around 10 months, and started with Isaac and Tane just jamming before they met Sam.

They then started to get a lot of gigs around the region, even one up in Te Awamutu, and things have gone from there.

“Everything just fl owed from there, its accidental that we got anything really,” they all say.

MUSICAL MINDS: The band Jepardous came together through the love of music. Ready to Rock.

Sister Therese Gouderc was the lucky winner of the BBQ promotion Wainuiomata Caltex ran recently.

She was one of 500 people that entered the promotion store manager Sorab Sharma created for the local community.

Sister Therese was very pleased with winning the prize, and Sorab was very pleased with the amount of entries the store received.

For the fourth time, Wai-nuiomata boxer Raymond Seumanu has defeated the national champion in his division.

Raymond defeated Kaleb Hauraki at a recent bout at a tournament in Naenae, defeating the current New Zealand Champion and Australian Golden Gloves winner by split decision.

In what is only Ray-mond’s fourth fi ght it is the fourth time that he has been in the ring Hauraki, winning all four bouts including once stopping his opponent in the second round.

Raymonds coaches say that it is a great result considering the experi-ence difference between the two.

“This was Raymond’s 13th fight, compared to his opponents 31st,” says Coach Craig Bennett.

What pleased Craig the most however was how Raymond reacted well in the fi ght and took advan-tage of what he saw.

“His opponents hands were down and Raymond adapted and picked it up really well,” he says.

“They have also asked for a rematch in a couple of weeks, but we are not

sure we can afford to get down to Christchurch for the bout.”

Raymond says that he did not feel like he was at his best throughout the bout, so belives he can do a lot better.

“He didn’t box the same way as when I usually have been against him, I defi nitely was not at my best though,” he says.

Craig agreed saying that Raymond has barely touched his potential.

“We have not seen the best of him yet, once we get him boxing like we want him to there is no end to where he could go,” he says.

Raymond says he is just striving to get better and better and see how far he can go.

The entire team agrees that a Commonwealth or Olympic gold medal would defi nitely be in his future.

Raymond along with fellow club member Jared Paku have also been invit-ed to box for New Zealand against an Australian team in the future.

If anyone would like to help out the club by getting Raymond and the rest of the boxers to bouts around the country please contact the club.

Police forced to shoot dog

Wellington Police will review an incident in which o cers looking for a potentially armed man wanted for arrest in Wainuiomata last week shot an aggressive dog after it at-tacked a Police dog.

Despite receiving veterinary at-tention, the dog later died of its injuries.

The Police dog escaped injury and remains on duty.

Police are still looking for the man.

Dog Poo concerns around Wainuiomata

There are concerns oating around the valley about the amount of dog poo that has not been picked up.

It is law that dog owners clean up their dogs mess while taking them on walks, not adhering to this could result in a ne.

There are many areas to pick up ‘DoggyDoo’ bags around the Hutt City Area, and plenty of bins to put them in as well.

Anyone who wants to learn more about where to obtain these bags or learn more about the dog control by laws, please visit the Hutt City Council website.

Have a safe HolidayWainuiomata News is wishing eve-

ryone a safe holiday period, and is reminding anyone that is going away to drive safely.

Joshna Narsinh left her loyal customers with some fun last week, organising a Sunday afternoon catch up with all

her regulars. She invited her customers to

the Palliser for an afternoon tea as well as a bouncy castle for the children, all of which was well received.

Bidding FarewellJosh says it was a chance to

give back to her customers after so many years of loyal patronage in her store.

The afternoon was met with a mix of happiness and sad-ness, as one of Wainuiomata’s icons left a job that she has been in for nearly 20 years.

“I will miss going in there and seeing her, it will be different after all these years, good on her for being there for so long,” a group of customers say.

“I hope that she enjoys the next few years and enjoys her retirement, she deserves it.”

The store has been bought by Milan and Bhavna Patel who are both really excited by the opportunity.

“We want the same relation-ship with the customers as Josh had,” Milan says.

They have also hired all of Josh’s staff, a move that has pleased all of the regular customers.

Hutt City Council has made a decision on the city’s gambling venue policy.

The Class 4 Gambling Venue and Board Venue Policy specifi es the maximum number of gaming machines (‘pokies’) that may be operated at a Class 4 venue- that’s pubs and clubs.

The review of Hutt City Coun-cil’s gambling policy had an ex-tended public submission period and hearings that focussed on four policy options. Council decided on “Option 3” by a majority vote.

Under this option new licenses would only be granted to venues in Petone commercial and the central commercial areas and venues with more than nine machines may relocate from suburban areas without reducing

the number of machines they operate. The current maximum limit of 39 venues across Lower Hutt remains the same.

Lower Hutt Mayor Ray Wallace says, “We are aiming to reduce the presence of pokies in our sub-urban areas and moving them into the commercial or entertainment areas, which is the more suitable location.

“We’ve listened closely to our submitters - those with concerns on gambling and those within the industry, and we believe we’ve come forward with a decision that takes the concerns of both into account.

“This is a vast improvement on what we’ve currently got, and those that see it as entertainment are still able to participate.”

Decision reached on gambling venue policy

Wainuiomata High School is once again holding catch up sessions for students who want the chance to keep up to date with NCEA.

Every holiday period the school does this, in an eff ort to keep the pass rate of the school improving.

The teachers are taking time out of their own break to try and help the students. For more information about what

teachers are available and when please check the school website or last news-letter.

In Wainuiomata there are many things to do to keep you and the children occupied over the holidays.

The Wainuiomata Recreation area is full of native bush walks, and nice and easy as well.

The Rimutaka Forest Park is also full of amazing native bush walks.

For those that are keen on some wildlife, the local seal colony is down the end of the Coast Road, and are always relaxing on their rocks for visi-tors to see.

Terrible Weather Another Icy blast is on its way up the

country, expecting to hit us within the next couple of days.

Temperatures will drop from today onwards, with temperatures starting to improve around Sunday.

For those travelling north, it is expect-ed that both the Rimutaka and Desert Roads will be closed due to snow.

There could be some particularly chilly nights and mornings for Wainuio-mata within the next few days as well.

Those who travel into work on the train in the mornings will be pleased with the announcement that the Hutt Rail line will have improvements done to it.

Lower Hutt Mayor Ray Wallace has welcomed news of an ad-ditional $2.3 million in funding to renew sections of the line.

The funding was secured by the Greater Wellington Regional Council (GWRC) from the New Zealand Transport Agency.

In an announcement yesterday

the GWRC said the improvements to the line will reduce speed restric-tions.

Mayor Ray Wallace says this is a very important transport line for the region.

“These improvements will make a big difference in the day-to-day life of many of our residents who regularly travel by rail,” he says.

“It’s also great to see this key infrastructure being maintained, it is vital people have access to well-connected and effi cient public

transport networks and that those networks operate safely.”

KiwiRail Group General Man-ager Asset Management, Engineer-ing and Innovation, David Gordon, says that the funding is a signifi cant boost for rail infrastructure and train services in the region.

Mr Gordon says that most of the $2.3 million will be spent on work such as sleeper replacements and bridge repairs and it’s this type of work that’s essential to keep the network fi t for purpose.

The Wainuiomata Hill can be seen as a blessing and a curse, it is what separates us from the ‘outside world’ keeps what we keep secret under wraps.

On the other side it can be blamed for the slowing down of the growth of the valley, the rea-son why many major businesses do not come over.

Around town it is not uncommon to hear “It keeps all the idiots from the Hutt away,” over the other side of the hill they say the opposite.

What the hill is at the end of the day is an easy road, it effectively is a motorway from Lower Hutt, it is wider than most of State Highway One.

This didn’t used to be this way though, as some residents would know, the road used to be a goat

track.More winding turns than the

Rimutaka’s, it wasn’t even sealed for a long time in its early history.

Passing places were few and mishaps were frequent, the road was also known to be very muddy in the winter.

Some records say the road could have been about two miles longer than it is now with all the bends added into it.

These travelling pains were slowly improved beginning in the 1940’s, just when Wainuiomata was about to explode as a com-munity.

The fi nal major reconstruction took place between 1978 and 1981, when it became the hill that it is today.

There were talks of a tunnel being put through the valley, this tunnel is actually bored partly,

and the entrance is in the Seaview industrial area.

There have also been talks of another route out of Wainuiomata, connecting possibly to Naenae via Upper Fitzherbert Road.

As it is now the Wainuiomata Hill Road is the only way to get in and out of the valley, it’s just up to the locals to make sure we make the best of it and keep our little piece of paradise as it is.

Councils around the region are looking to ensure access to healthy food around the region is available for everyone.

This is the what is being addressed at the Real Food Challenge event being hosted by Hutt City Council, Wellington City Council and regional food entities who are forming a regional food alliance as the scale and scope of small fresh food providers grows across the Wellington region.

This event will provide an opportunity for discussion on the regional food map development and a survey undertaken by the regional food alliance that examined the status of community food development.

There will be presentations from the Council representatives on what they are doing and where they see things going.

“This event is timely, given the increased public awareness and interest in having

healthy food options more available in our community. I hope that we have a discussion around how we can improve the structure for community food development so that everyone involved in this vibrant and grow-ing sector in the wider Wellington region is better placed for growth” says Julie Harris from Community Fruit, Wellington.

“This event is an excellent opportunity for the public and those interested or involved with community food activities to participate in discussions on how we all best move forward to provide a platform for growth of this sector of our region. The event is being held at the mezzanine room at the Central Library in Wellington on 23-24 July with a dinner catered for by the Common Unity Project and hosted by the Sustainability Trust. The evening function will include an opportunity to enjoy food from the Common Unity project based at Epuni School and Community Fruit Wellington.

Real Food Challenge

I feel like it is a small victory for Wainuiomata, in us retaining the postbox down the village, well done us.

It shows that if we make enough noise, we will be able to make change on anything, no matter how big the corporate opposition is.

Why the decision was made to take

it away, I don’t know.It is well used, it is in a handy spot

and it makes it easier for everyone that lives passed the mall to send their mail.

I am wondering if NZ Post is hoping everyone moves to email soon, as it seems they do not want mail boxes anymore, but we showed them.

Now I hope that other government agencies do not try the same thing over here in Wainuiomata, and if they do I hope we stand up and fi ght again.

Well done to Wainuiomata and well done to NZ Post for listening.

For the 19th year running the Wainuiomata Classic mountain run was held on the tracks and firebreaks above Wainuiomata and Lower Hutt.

The Wainuiomata Harrier Club has successfully hosted this event since its beginning in 1996, with a few changes in the course but always in perfect conditions.

This year was no exception, with the fi eld of nearly 50 runners from around the greater Wellington region competing.

This year was also held in

conjunction with the Wellington Mountain Running Champi-onships and saw several local athletes receive medals in their respective grades.

For the fi rst time in the history of this race a college-challenge was introduced for all college-age runners.

With this type of event being quite different to those normally attended by college students, we are hoping it will grow and become a highly contested event in years to come.

This year saw a great competi-tion in the girl’s event with Hutt Valley High School’s Jayme Maxwell taking the gold medal.

Joel Carman from Wainuiomata High School took out the boy’s event.

Among the senior runners were New Zealand representatives Tim Hodge, Stephen Day and Jackie Mexted from Scottish Harriers.

These three athletes have re-cently been selected to run in the World Mountain Running Championships to be held in

Wales in September. They showed the quality re-

quired to be selected for such an event over the gruelling course which includes the “world famous in Wainuiomata” “hill from hell” at the top of the course.

All athletes took to the fire-breaks and tracks at the bottom of the Wainuiomata hill in the 10.5km run, 9km run, and the shorter 4.8km run for the college-challenge runners.

Wainuiomata Harriers' posted some top placings with Nikki

Braniff-Jones and Georgina Cox placing 1st and 2nd respectively in the women 35-49 grade, Don McGowan gaining 3rd place in the men 60+ and Paul Richardson placing 2nd in the men 50-59 grade.

Full results are on our website: www.sportsground.co.nz/wai-nuiomataaahcThe date for the 20th Wainuio-mata Classic will be posted on our website.

Paul Richardson, 2nd men 50-59, coming down the fi nal hill to the fi nish line

Wainuiomata Classic successful once again Joel Carman, eventual winner, leading through the fi rst part of

the college-challenge race.

The New Zealand Softball team has come second in the World Softball Championship, held in Saskatoon in Canada.

The side, which includes Wainuiomata local Joel Evans, lost 10-5 to the hosts in the fi nal after leading 5-0 early on.

The side will be disappointed with the result after heading into the Champion-ships as the defending champions.

Wainuiomata News congratulates Joel on his efforts during the Championships, and wishes him and the team all the best in what the future brings.

The Wainuiomata High School 1st XV had another big win this weekend, destroying Onslow College 39-0.

The result keeps them unbeaten in the division with 12 points, equal with St Bernard’s College.

SPORT

By Aaron Meredith

The Wainuiomata women’s rugby team showed the club how it’s done on Saturday destroying Johnsonville 130-0.

This was the team’s third win in a row putting them on top of their division with 15 points.

There were big games from all the girls, Jackie Patea and Davina Lasini scored fi ve tries each, Chanelle Skipper scored four and Acacia Te Iwimate kicked nine conversions on her way to 23 points.

Wainuiomata were on top in every aspect of play, and are looking like the much superior team in their division.

In other games the premiers went down 30-27 in a tight tussle away against Oriental Rongotai, the result leaves Wainuiomata on eight points

in sixth position, needing to win their last two games to get into the playoffs.

The reserves also went down to Ories, the 15-3 result knocking them down to third in their division.

The colts had an awesome game, defeating Avalon 26-19, effectively winning the game in the fi rst half by going up 26-0.

The 85kg restricted side also had a win, a last minute drop goal giving them the 17-15 victory over Wel-lington.

Next week the Premiers and Pre-mier Reserves are at home against Hutt Old Boys Marist, the fi rst time the two teams have played against each other since last year’s Jubilee Cup fi nal.

The Reserves kick off at 1.00pm, followed by the Premiers at 2.45pm, both games will be played at William Jones Park

The Wainuiomata Rugby League Premiers had another victory, defeat-ing long time bogey team, the Porirua Vikings 31-18.

The result keeps them in third on the table with 19 points, but they are right behind the Randwick Kingfi shers, who with 20 points would fall behind the Lions with any slip up.

The Premier Reserves did not have such a successful time of it, going down 28-18

to the Titahi Bay Marlins. This means they still sit down the bot-

tom half of the table, in seventh place with 11 points.

The Fitzroy Lions are struggling to keep the early season form, going down 38-10 to the Randwick Kingfi shers.

The Indigenous Lions have turned around a slow start however, defeating the Porirua Phoenix side 38-28 to keep their good form continuing.

The Indigenous Lions are sitting in third place with 14 points, while the

Fitzroy Lions are sitting in fi fth with eight points.

Next week the Premiers are away at Te Whiti Park, against the Te Aroha Eels, a 2.30pm kickoff is scheduled on Saturday.

The Reserves are in the curtain raiser with a 1pm kickoff.

In the senior first competition, the Fitzroy Lions are all the way up at Matthews Park against the Kapiti Coast Bears, while the Indigenous Lions are at home against the University Hunters, both games kick off at 1pm.

The Wainuiomata senior hockey team had another amazing victory, destroy-ing Naenae 2 by 11-1 on Sunday.

The Wainuiomata side is looking very strong, despite being struck by injuries and illness.

Hockey team dominates againthe Takitimu Womens team, who will play at the National Maori Hockey Tournament in Whangarei.

The Tournament has been held annu-ally since 1992, and the teams are based on the Maori Land Court boundaries.

The Takitimu team draws players from the Hawkes Bay, Wairarapa and Wellington regions.

Tournaments are held each Labour Weekend and are an ‘offi cial’ listing on the NZ Hockey Federation calendar of events.

The Wainuiomata High School played on Friday in awful conditions, they did play strongly though winning 3-2 over Aotea College.

The Junior Teams performed well once again, the year 3/4 side won against Upper Hutt, the year 5/6 drew 2 all with Hutt, and the year 7/8 side beat Karori 12-2.

WEAVING THROUGH: Leigh Gray shows great ball control on Saturday.

As a Wellington Rugby fan, I am used to this feeling that I have at the moment. That feeling of what could have been? Shouldn’t we have beaten them easily? What went wrong? It is a question I am asking anyone out there that will listen, or in this case read, what is it like to win a fi nal?I have been to or watched many fi nals that involved Wellington, ITM Cup fi nals a plenty, but they have all ended in a loss.Losses to Canterbury have always hurt the most, I remember multiple games where we were by far the better team just to lose, and those moments hurt. This last one though, the loss to The Highlanders is diff erent, yes I am disap-pointed that we lost, but it is not as bad in recent seasons.Maybe it is the fact that for once it is not The Crusaders or Canterbury, The High-landers have always been my second team so I’m happy for them. But as a proud Wellington and Hur-ricanes supporter, I am still left wonder-ing, what is it like to win a fi nal?The last time I can remember a Wel-lington team, other than sevens, is when Wellington won the NPC way back in 2000.That’s too long ago, I can’t remember how it feels. So can someone tell me?What is it like to fi nally, eventually win a fi nal?

What’s it like to win a fi nal?
