Marina del Rey — “The King’s Marina?” The seaside community doesn’t even have a mayor, let alone a king. Perhaps the founders would have chosen a different name if they could have foreseen the area’s growing reputation as a unique culinary hotspot for seafood lovers. Marina del Mariscos, perhaps? That has a nice ring to it.

The quality of entrées, excellent service and brilliant harbor views come with a price, but you won’t find it on the restaurant’s expansive happy hour menu, where scallop ceviche, Dungeness crab cake and steelhead trout hold court from 2:30 to 6:30 p.m. daily.

The Warehouse4499 Admiralty Way(310) 823-5451mdrwarehouse.com

The uninitiated should be forgiven for thinking that The Warehouse’s shipwreck fantasy vibe is a calculated effort to capitalize on the reemergence of pirate chic. In reality, the restaurant is nearly as old as the marina itself, and much of the seafaring décor is authentic. Go for the ambiance, stay for the swordfish or halibut.

The Hollywood club vibe and chic interior are in stark contrast to the boats in the harbor at this restaurant inside Marina Del Rey Hotel. A nice marriage of the trendy and traditional brings Japanese cuisine such as Hamachi and charred octopus to compliment the standard American offerings like lobster rolls and steamed mussels.

When rock musician Lee Michaels first opened his restaurant, there was really no need for a menu since there was basically only one dish: the Killer Shrimp. It’s still the first thing on the menu, and a must-try for any seafood lover in the Marina. There’s magic in that secret sauce.

What does it take to make a hotel restaurant feel like a spot for locals? A daily happy hour with buy one, get one for $1 drink specials is a good start. Add a menu featuring pan-roasted Mahi and scallops from Maine for good measure. A beautiful view of Mother’s Beach completes the experience.

Lest we forget that Italy has over 4,500 miles of coastline, the menu at this quaint Fisherman’s Village restaurant has plenty of Italian seafood to choose from. The Italian word for “seafood” is pescatora, as in tonnarelli pescatora, a perfect spaghetti dish to order if you want a little bit of everything.

centanni Trattoria1700 Lincoln blvd.(310) 314-7275centannivenice.com

If anyone in particular is responsible for the new wave of Italian eateries in Venice, it might be these guys. The menu and wine list are authentic enough, but the execution is decidedly modern. Centanni is also among the more affordable options on this list. Nearly all entrees are $20 or less, with many options for half that price.

When developer Abbot Kinney died in 1920, so did much of his plans for “Venice of America,” initially imagined as a replica of the famed Italian city. The Italian flair dwindled as Venice evolved into the eclectic community it is today, but the spirit of Italy has reemerged as new restaurants and old favorites have made Venice one of L.A.’s hottest neighborhoods for Italian cuisine.

Barrique796 Main St.(310) 399-9010barriquevenice.com

Just like Venice itself, a dinner at Barrique is memorable thanks to the mix of old and new. Chef Antonio Mure is still here from the restaurant’s early days as Ado, but the management has changed. The candle-lit ambience of this cute cottage is whimsical, the wine menu is vast (but almost entirely Italian) and the food is superb.

casa Ado12 W. Washington blvd.(310) 577-2589casaado.com

Like sister location Barrique, Ado is dark, intimate and authentic. It is this combination that leaves many patrons and critics reluctantly using the word “magical” when describing their dinner experience. Yes, Casa Ado is technically in Marina del Rey, but it’s also too close to the canals to leave off this list.

Gone are the days when gondoliers traveled the original Venice canals in red and white striped shirts and straw hats, but one of the gondolas ended up on the ceiling at Danny’s. The menu has dabbled in Italian cuisine in the form of pizza and pasta, but makes this list for preserving the history of a time when Venice Beach took its cues from the Queen of the Adriatic.

scopa italian roots2905 Washington blvd.(310) 821-1100scopaitalianroots.com

Scopa is only a few doors down from Abbot Kinney Boulevard, and this beautifully modern high-end Italian restaurant totally fits the vibe. Created by celebrity chef Antonia Lofaso, the menu includes oxtail on rigatoni and other luxurious dishes from Lo Stivale.

Venice cucina209 Windward ave.(310) 392-6300venicecucina.com

Right there on Windward Circle, Venice Cucina is an oasis for anyone who feels like Italian dining should be a little less pretentious and a lot more casual. It’s BYOB, with no corkage fee, so grab a bottle of chianti across the street. The menu is extensive, with a variety of pastas, salads and 10 different thin-crust pizzas offered at reasonable prices.

more coming. With its celebrated Rat Pack Martini Lounge, the Cucina comes off a tad more grownup than its more family-oriented sister restaurant C&O Trattoria, where crayons come with the table and there’s a nightly “That’s Amore!” singalong.

You know those romantic comedies where a couple goes out for a fancy Italian dinner and one of them orders the “pappardelle al cinghiale” because they don’t know Italian, then ends up with braised wild boar? That plays out here every day, and it’s delicious. This restaurant is a big part of Lincoln Boulevard’s Italian revival.

Vanilla Bake Shop’s sweets may be pint-sized, but they pack a powerful sugar rush. Offering macarons, mini cupcakes and shooters — desserts in mini shot glasses — in flavors from Meyer lemon raspberry to banana chocolate chip, this boutique bakery hits the sweet spot for life’s little indulgences.

Life in Santa Monica can be pretty sweet — literally. From fresh bakery and gourmet donuts to specialty cheesecake and Italian ice, desserts are very much in vogue here despite the city’s reputation for obsessing over healthy eating. Perhaps the lesson here is that it’s healthy to treat yourself once in a while.

The donuts at Sidecar are at once both sweet and savory. Sugar and salt join forces in the butter & salt donut, a vanilla bean cake with brown butter glaze and fleur de sel. Bacon bits are sprinkled on top of the popular maple bacon donut, and the cornbread donut (with corn kernels inside!) is topped with sorghum brown butter glaze.

Indulging in authentic Mexican cooking at Paco’s Tacos Cantina is not just a good idea, it’s a local tradition. The festively decorated restaurant makes all its tortillas by hand after you order, and portions are massive. The tacos de carne asada with rice and beans will leave you satisfied, and the beef, avocado and melted cheese Supermex burrito might just knock you out cold.

Westchester has a reputation of being not quite as culturally sophisticated as neighboring communities to the north. But the truth is that Westchester is home to not only one of the busiest airports in the country, but also a culinary scene with international flair. Here you can take a culinary trip around the globe without taking off your shoes for the TSA.

Going out for a drink (or five) in Venice or Santa Monica requires a bit of work — not just Ubering from bar to bar, but making sure you’ve spent enough time dressing up to look like you’re appropriately dressed down. Playa del Rey, however, makes a pub crawl easy with its walkable row of laid-back bars along Culver Boulevard. “ Country barbecue shack in the city! Morfia’s has a real brick smoker, crucial for getting the

traditional product. Real Texas barbecue has a chewy exterior called bark, a rosy ring where the smoke has penetrated the meat, and an interior that is moist and tender but not mushy. . . .There are many dessert choices at Morfia’s and they’re all made in-house, so there’s a good chance you’ll find something you like.” — Excerpts from restaurant review by Richard Foss
